Brad, focus mode isn't why "thief purists" are angry. People are angry because it's a completely unnecessary reboot of a franchise on top of being a horrible game.

Holy crap that framerate is terrible and its running at 900p as well, surprised they didn't mention it outside of the beginning, probably would have if it was PS4 version.

This game doesn't look offensively bad or anything. Middle-of-the-road is fine every once in awhile. We've been spoiled on AAA quality video games.

I can't believe that in the year of our lord two thousand and fourteen we are still waiting for the PC version to fix crappy textures, sub 1080p resos, and bad framerates. That was supposed to be the one thing new consoles would fix.

I would say being boring is the biggest crime a game can commit. If it's not even entertaining, it's pointless.

I'm normally have no problem with rebooting moribund franchises - I loved Tomb Raider and DmC - but this looks like it was done the worst way possible. Some of the ideas look interesting, but it mainly just looks like a boring, bad stealth game.

Thief and Dishonored are trying to accomplish two very dramatically different things, despite being presented in similar trappings.

I will try this I think, when it goes on sale. Until then, I'll keep playing Dishonored and start waiting for Dishonored 2.

This didn't help me figure out what this game was for shit. All he did was monkey around a lot and get into combat, instead of avoiding things like a thief actually should. And the comparison to Dishonored? Not quite the same. One is a game about an assassin, the other is a game about a thief. The distinction is significant, and trying to play one like the other isn't necessarily going to be possible.

There's something off by the way he aggressively leans in when snagging up stuff.

It's probably not the biggest problem the game has, however.

@village_guy: Yeah, it's sad that 3D stealth fans have to settle for things like this.

I don't know. People seem to think the bar is set so high but there really haven't been that many stealth games in the past several years, especially the sort of stay-in-the-dark type stealth that is specific to Thief. Splinter Cell I suppose but that series has been moving away from that direction as well.

I'm personally still interested in some indies trying to do 3D stealth games...

@blackichigo: It just looks average to me. People are talking about this game like it's a steaming pile of shit but there were some things that were genuinely cool in it. The way you peek around corners and can see the hands, the checking for hidden switches around book cases and frames, some of the ambient dialog. I thought that stuff looked neat. The city looked lackluster and pointless to a certain degree but I can see how "open world" is a big selling point on the back of game boxes these days. Deadly Shadows had a similarly claustrophobic "open world" design, which I suppose is the sad part in that this modern game fails to evolve on it's quite agely predecessor.

So from the Quick Look alone I don't think it looks terrible or boring, but maybe thats because I really like the stealth genre which for me really always boiled down to slowly crouch-walking through levels, while snuffing out all light sources and piling up guards onto one big body-stack in a single room - then gleefully running through the place knowing I'm the only conscious person there.

For people that enjoyed the faster paced and combat oriented Dishonored I can see how the slow and methodical play style that hinges on evasion and a certain level of OCD found in Thief can look "crappy" in comparison. Once again to clarify, I haven't played this new one and I'm not saying it's great, I'm just saying. hey it doesn't look that bad.

I completely agree with you. This game doesn't look like complete garbage. It's worst crime seems to be that it is boring. My main problem with this seems that there isn't much to it. You steal random things, put it in your magical bag that turns it into gold, and buy upgrades with it or just go on with the story. I can forgive a game that has lackluster gameplay if the story is good enough, but even that doesn't seem all that interesting to me. I just cannot find anything thing about this game that makes me want to play it.

A lot of critics seem to be on a general "stealth games are all about trial and error and therefore boring " bias these days. That said, after watching the 60 minutes of footage, I understand how this could come off as disappointing.

Also, those writing/voice acting parts were all kind of terrible compared to the likes of Deadly Shadows.

Regardless of the quality of the gameplay/story or whatever, what concerns me the most is that this performance (framerate, mainly) is considered acceptable on "next gen" hardware. I'd call this unacceptable even for 360 standards, what the hell.

I've still ended up with the PC version out of a dumb hope that Eidos Montreal can strike gold twice by accident, hopefully it runs better than this, jeeeez.

So glad I stuck with this quick look until 55 minutes in.

I don't think this is an inferior Dishonored. Dishonored is just one of those legions of pretend-stealth games where you can just blast your way through the game if you like. It may be a good game and Thief may be a not-so-good one, but they're different games. Dishonored is more of a fantasy Deus Ex, Thief is only about hiding.

Really enjoying this game so far. Great atmosphere and fun movement/mechanics.

I guess I'm on the side of the "fan-boy" here, because game reviewers (giant bomb included) are being super critical of this game - pessimistic to the point that it's somewhat funny.

As a game in the Thief franchise it's fun and worth playing.

Don't you know that professional reviewers are the authority on whether a game is good or not? Your opinion is wrong.

I really like a lot of the animations with the hands and stuff. Really immerses you. I remember reading an article a while back about the devs saying that they wanted the hands to be a focal point, which makes sense in a game like this.

I disagree. I can run Battlefield 4 maxed out at 60+ FPS, and Splinter Cell Conviction still runs like messy garbage whenever I'm in an outdoors area.

that doesn't contradict the statement about power.

My point is that some games are not optimized very well for certain platforms.

Having bought, played and finished the original Thief years ago, this looks incredibly dull and cliched comparatively. Sure the graphical fidelity is better, but the levels and design look and is laid out terribly. The levels are claustrophobic, repetitive and empty. After watching this quicklook, I really have no desire to play this at all.

Nixxes was given the porting job, so hopefully it'll be good. They're the same guys who did the Deus Ex HR and Tomb Raider PC ports.

The fact that the minimap does not have markers for those loading transition points (the windows, etc), seems as though it would get annoying fast, and just seems to speak of a general lack of thought into some of the design.

Apparently this game released for PS3 and 360 as well. Anyone know if the quality of those ports is anything other than what we expect them to be?

Considering how ugly this game is, I'm amazed that they couldn't at least get it running smoothly on the PS4 and Xbone. That aside, the game itself just looks really bland and boring. It's also disappointing that the guard AI seems no more advanced than that seen in Metal Gear Solid over fifteen years ago.
