I'm not sure Tower Defense games have much of a future. I don't see any way to innovate their gameplay.

"So this is basically a tower defense game."

Quicktime closed.

I'm sorry, but the sole Tower Defense game I own and intend to play is Dungeon Defenders. I find it very hard to be interested in a Warcraft 3 level as an entire game (same stance I have for HAGs, or whatever you want to call them).

Strangely enough, they've been going on for over 12 years without any innovation, but still seem pretty damn popular. Personally I got tired off it after the big wave of newgrounds flash games around 2001 or so, but as long as people seem to pay for them (despite there being thousands of free games in the genre), it's understandable that they keep getting made, and having lasted so long kind of makes it seem like it's more than just a fad. I'm just sad it seems to have replaced the RTS genre somehow, a genre which I love.

Both Dungeon Defenders and Orcs Must Die are great, innovative Tower Defense games. In fact, DD may have started the TPP Tower Defense game structure. Oh, and let's not forget Trenched/Iron Brigade.

I had no idea Futuremark was making another game. This is pretty bad ass! I might have to give this one a buy, cause I love what those guys do.

btw the FMV scenes with Gorg remind me of Power Rangers

I am afraid we are coming up on the 'ironic FMV' breaking point. Leave that shit in 2011, folks. Too much self-awareness CAN be a bad thing.

A gun would fire in space. Space bullets are more plausible than space lasers in fact.

Newton's first law pretty much means that a bullet when go perfectly straight forever in space without slowing down.

Light waves travel through space, so muzzle flash makes sense.

Ha, I didn't expect to see a QL for this game at all, especially considering how it just kinda dropped in out of nowhere.

I'm not a huge tower defense guy. It's more or less run into the ground at this point. The B-Movie homage got me interested though and it's been pretty fun. The tower defense itself is pretty tight/difficult as far as placement. The earlier stages definitely feel more like a puzzle than anything else as there is almost an expected build and placement order if you want to do even marginally well on it. It seems to be loosening up a bit in the later levels. Either way, the whole retro sci-fi wrapper on it has made it worth at least an initial play through.

OK I don't really want to labor the point because I do kind of agree with what you're saying. But Gorg isn't really aping the FMV thing. This is more of a throwback to 50s sci-fi kitch than an ironic FMV homage. A love letter to the days when the MST3K movies were actually being shown as movies, not fodder for Mike and the bots.

Regardless of all that, this game is a lot of fun. If you're sick of Tower Defense this won't bring you back though. It's pretty much TD101 on the gameplay front. The game is really won or lost on the cheesy sci-fi it's wrapped in, but I'd still say the gameplay is solid if you're still entertained by this sort of thing. (which I personally am)

When I saw the 1930s style Buck Rogers/Flash Gordon Serials black & white art style, I was hoping for these kind of FMVs - they alone will make me buy this game.

Sadly, the game play part is not interesting at all. The last Tower Defense style game I did like was Anomaly Warzone Earth. It is generally a very narrow formula, indeed - but so is shooting everything on sight (FPS).

I dunno, this game specifically seems to innovate them in many ways. The whole orbits/rotating is new as far as I can tell, and the idea of picking your "team" of towers each mission is fairly new.

Shooters, at their core, are still Doom but that hasn't stopped them from changing drastically over the years. It just takes the right group of smart guys to make subtle changes that affect the experience drastically.

It's not like ALL guns have flash lights in their barrels. Muzzle flash is caused by heat, which usually has issues in the vacuum of space. Without an ignition of some sort there's no way to even propel a bullet perfectly straight. Unless you got out and pushed.

You can probably make bullets containing oxygen or a weapon which releases it into the combustion space. I don't see the problem.

The shot would accelerate the turret too, though, that's a problem.

You're right, but with most genres, a game can take a step in a completely different direction and set itself faaaar apart from everything else (like Portal, which I would consider and FPS, but I don't need to explain how it's like no other FPS). I just don't see Tower Defense games being able to go too far off in one direction without no longer being a Tower Defense game.

I dunno how to explain it, it's just that this is one of those genres where when you see the games, you say "Yup, looks like another Tower Defense game".

You know, tower defense may be getting a little played out, but I have to admit that the "moving your towers around" mechanic is kind of cool. Also, Arielle is pretty. Also also, I love Jeff's "What?" right at the beginning.

If the gun uses gunpowder then it should fire in a vacuum since gunpowder has its own oxidizer (i.e. potassium nitrate) and can burn without oxygen.

In any case though it makes no sense to use a traditional gunpowder weapon firing slow-moving projectiles when you can fire coherent beams of light traveling at lightspeed or rail guns.
