Yo, the OG Dawn of War games were/are pretty good. This looks a bit as if DoW had a baby with Sid Meir's Beyond Earth, which intrigues me.

"Space Marines look like FuncoPops".

Damn it, @ybbaaabby, they kind of do now.

As someone who has never actually played, this looks like the closest thing to the actual tabletop game.

I just want a sequel to WH40K: Space Marine, is that so wrong?

Remember when there were almost no Warhammer games at all? Dawn of War felt like a revelation. They'd finally done it! What a time.

Is it weird that there are Kroot units (or at least Kroot hounds) when the Tau aren't in the game? Or has the 40K lore progressed to where the Kroot are their own thing (and not just "the guys that the Tau enslaved")?

Since you discussed the term 4X yourself and didn't want to categorize it as such, I would disagree. Quoting from the Wiki: The term "4X" originates from a 1993 preview of Master of Orion in Computer Gaming World by Alan Emrich, in which he rated the game "XXXX" as a pun on the XXX rating for pornography. The four Xs were an abbreviation for "EXplore, EXpand, EXploit and EXterminate". By February 1994 another author in the magazine stated that Command Adventures: Starship "only pays lip service to the four X's", and other game commentators adopted the "4X" label to describe a game genre with specific gameplay conventions.

Maybe there are other conventions to describe 4X games, but I wouldnt cling to the different Civ Victory conditions approach. And it seems you defintely do EXplore, EXpand, EXploit and EXterminate in this game...

I'm not sure whether a 4x game with zero diplomacy would have enough depth for me.

Also, I'm never a fan of 40K games where allied forces (like Space Marines and the Imperial Army) are fighting each other for no given reason.

@mendon80: Ye, their definition of 4X is very off-base. But also, the term 4X is extremely outdated at this point. It has been taken in way too many different directions to have any real meaning. It's about as useful as calling something an action game.

I love Warhammer. I love video games based on Warhammer. But can we please get something that doesn't revolve around Space Marines?

@bbalpert:Well, according to the "lore", which I will now be referring to as the fluff, as any self-respecting human might. (Oh, the inherent contraction.) The Kroot are one of the many races that the Tau made subservient, mainly through military means, to act as their fodder. There's like to be outposts of Kroot that are very much self-contained, and free of all that red/yellow menace.

So yes, it's possible depending on where they're at, but it's mostly just a game thing. A lot of worlds in the fiction have indigenous life, and this will make fans excited about the Tau. To which I will say; "hah!"

The warhammer space marine quick look is a Vinny/Ryan gem. Imagine a sequel called:

"Warhammer 40,000: Grey Knight"

I really enjoyed this QL, thanks guys! Sometimes I want to play a 4x game without so much management and this seems to get to the part where things smash into each other a lot faster. Looks pretty good.

@do_the_manta_ray: This could have changed as canon is a slippery and ever-changing beast, but at least in the 3rd-edition Tau codex, Kroot weren't made subservient: the Tau discovered the Kroot on the run from a load of Orks and helped them out during their expansions - now the Kroot are "loyal mercenaries" for the Tau most of the time. They are mercs but they have a special fondness and working relationship with the Tau, but that won't stop small groups of them going off and doing their own thing.

The Skull King is skulking :D. There was an interesting Extra Credits video on why GW licensed out the Warhammer license so liberally. I think it was a couple years ago, so I guess it's been working for them lol

Give it a few more years. It's only a matter of time before Jeff and Dan start a 40K podcast and get invited to host a Gen Con panel.

@fiyenyaa: You know your Kroots (and Groots?) far better than I do. I was going off of memory, and it has been a good number of years since I delved into the 40 K fiction.

And in all honesty, I was never much of a Tau enthusiast. Chaos, in particular the Night Lords, were more my taste.

It would be really funny if they added Tau to this game and included a diplomacy system for them featuring units from the water caste that every other player could just completely ignore. It would be great if they found some clever way of letting you send out diplomat units and rewarding you when other players gunned the poor fools down.

@efesell: First of all im a active subscriber since 2016 and member since 2013 and watching the content even before that so you dont have to welcome me. But for the first time in over 5 years that im watching the content im annoyed by the fact that one person has to be in every single video. I dont dislike her to bad altough i guess she is my least favourite person on staff. For me its just getting to much and now i start avoiding all east content all together wich is big bulk of all content im supporting with my money so i think im allowed to my opinion.

Wether giant bomb will do something with (I doubt it) is up to them.

@extac3: Well founded doubts, probably, I can't imagine too many of them are going to take your opinion of 'I'm tired of hearing this person' with too much enthusiasm.

@do_the_manta_ray: I had a huge break from the hobby for about 10 years, but the last few years have been a real renaissance for GW: I now own something like 600 models - and almost 1 in 2 of those are even painted!

This is the first Warhammer game that looks good to me. I've tried the RTS games and they just cannot hold my interest, unfortunately.

@fiyenyaa: Hey, good on you. I'm currently enjoying that same break you mentioned. I've always intended to get back into the fray once I move somewhere with a hobby shop approximately somewhat nearby, so that I can enjoy said hobby with others. As is, painting and modelling doesn't feel quite as rewarding when there's an entire aspect of the hobby, playing the actual game, that I can't participate in.

Also, I very much expected you to say that 1-2 models out of the entire 600 were painted. Your commitment is pretty impressive.

@do_the_manta_ray: That would have been the case last time I was in the hobby, but now I go to a local gaming group, play some casual games with friends, and hang out on a lovely discord with folks I meet up with once in a while to play at Warhammer World. It incentivises painting quite a bit - although I do enjoy it in it's own right I agree I probably wouldn't be doing it if not for the game.

The four Xs in 4X aren't victory conditions, btw
