I preordered this when Sony launched its "Play" initiative last month (?), but forgot that I would still be busy with "Persona 5" when it released. Definitely looking forward to playing this once I have the time.

It looks like the grandparents were in their late 30's/early 40's when their grandkids were born. WTF? Can't the people who wrote this game do basic math and make them like 20 years older so they're at least age appropriate?

The whole family tree is fucked up.

Lol, I'm not really into this genre, but there was no better way to get my attention than to suddenly have the kid shapeshift. That looks great. It transforms it from walking simulator to being a freaking owl hunting rabbits and being a giant squid tentacle slithering around simulator, which is much more exciting to simulate.

I mean...Obviously this is different from family to family, but I'm pretty sure my great-grandma was engaged when she was 15 or 16 and started having kids around 17. There's nothing impossible here, and I'm not sure it was even unusual among older generations.

Edit: From Norway to America WITH HIS HOUSE on a FISHING BOAT? That's more fantastical than anything else in this quick look.

Pretty sure the Mythbusters tested the full circle swing. I seem to remember they discovered it's functionally impossible to do under your own power. You need the chain to remain taut all the way through the circle, but a human can't generate enough speed to get the angular momentum necessary to overcome gravity, so the chain always slackens at the top of the loop.

Basically you need rockets and a way not to incinerate yourself in the process. There's probably a clip of it on YouTube somewhere.

I love games like this but they tend to cost too much considering the length and replay value.

@max_cherry: Its possible, my grandma got kids before she was 20 and all her kids got children in their early 20s as well. She totally was grandma at the age of 40. 30 is really young though :’)

The writers are trying to to fit too many generations into one century. Unless, teen pregnancy is like the norm in the Finch family?

As others have said, doing the 360 degree "wrap the chain" swing isn't really feasible on a chain swingset, but with solid bars it is even it's own sport!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiiking

They compete to perform a complete rotation with longer and longer bars.

I bought this and Outlast 2 last night. I finished this and have played a few hours of Outlast 2. This game is probably my favorite 'walking simulator' simply because it does more than just have you walk around an environment, like my other favorite though not amazing ones like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. The things it does is really cool. Well, actually that's the biggest thing that stands apart, otherwise, it reminds me of Gone Home a lot just with a

The things it does is really cool. Well, actually that's the biggest thing that stands apart, otherwise, it reminds me of Gone Home a lot just with a wilder design from the outside. I am more into the story, though. I also like that it takes place in a real place, Orcas Island, even though some of the signage isn't correct. I think you'll get something out of this even if you're not that into this type of game. This is a game I could recommend to people that don't generally play games, while I probably wouldn't do that for any other 'walking simulator' game, other than maybe Everybody's Gone to the Rapture due to that setting.

Just for reference my great grandmother, who died when I was 4, would be 121 by now.

@max_cherry: what logic are you talking about? You just said you thought the grandparents ages were impossible. Right? I only told you its possible and that my grandma is an example. Thats it. I think its young too. Maybe I didn't understand your comment correctly...

Just for the record my great grandmother, who died when I was 4, would be 121 by now.

It's quite common in rural parts for people to get married and knocked up right out of high school. Also it's statistically more likely that their offspring will follow suit. While that experience isn't yours or mine, it's not freakishly abnormal at all. Hopefully you've learned a bit today about the breadth of experiences out there.

@do_the_manta_ray: yeah, but the odds of it happening over and over again are remote. I mean my parents are older than their grandparents! But, maybe I am overthinking this and the writers purposely condensed the family tree because it was convenient. Either way, I wash my hands of this!

@max_cherry: Hah, that's pretty much the right way to go about it. But depending on where in the states it is, I could see it. It's not beyond the realm of possibility, but a wee bit odd, I sure do agree with you there.

Ooh, same people who made Unfinished Swan. That's promising right out of the gate. That thing had potential.

@max_cherry: youre just miscalculating I think, everyone in the finch family got kids in their early 20s and the ones that survived had like 4 of em again. Its really not farfetched at all and theres no teen pregnancy's galore. I had my doubts about the family on the whole being too big, like you, but looking at the fully filled in family tree at the end of the game its really not as extraordinary as it seems at first glance. A lot of people died really young though in the finch family.

This game looks good to me; definitely gonna wait for a sale though. I can't justify $20 on a 2-3 hour video experience.

Also, far as ages go, here's an example. Bret Favre, the former NFL QB, became a grandfather at age 42. At the time, his mother was 67; so she was a great-grandmother at that age. His grandmother was/would've 92 (not sure if she was still alive at the time), and she'd have been a great-great-grandmother at that age.

And that's just one tiny example that I know because of how famous Favre is.

@max_cherry: I love math! Let's do some!

Edie was born 1917 when her father Odin was 37.

Edie was 33 when her son Sam was born in 1950 (corrected, thanks max).

Edie was 51 when her first grandchild Dawn was born in 1968. Dawn's father Sam was 18 (corrected, thanks max).

Edie was 71 when her first great-grandchild Lewis was born in 1988. Lewis's mother Dawn was 20.

Since Sam had Dawn and enlisted in the military in 18, we can assume it was probably an unplanned pregnancy. You are right that Sam and Dawn both had kids unusually young, but I think the developers thought about that.

Just a few corrections:

1968 - 1917 = 51 not 49

1950 - 1917 = 33 not 31

I finished this in an hour and a half, really loved it and wanted it to last longer because I wanted to learn more about the family.

I just really love walking through houses, it's very relaxing and just like how these games are narrated.

The Weird is actually a real book. It's an award-winning anthology of genre fiction that gives an odd feeling rather than wonder, edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer, two of my favorite editors of SF/F fiction.
