The white face buttons in this were so ugly and hard to see, why would anyone do that.

Also cucumbers are delicious.

Holy shit I loved gorilla.bas. That was a crazy flashback I just had. It was the only game I had when I was very young and my dad had this enormous laptop with windows 3.1 on it.

Lemmings was the first game I remember playing at the grand old age of 5 or 6. I never got past a certain level at the time :)

And instead of Worms, during high school I was hooked on Liero, which is sort of real time Worms, and infinitely fun during computer class when the teacher isn't paying attention.

Worms always seemed so calm and laid back, like a game of checkers.

I played Liero.

There is ONE Worms game you should play. Just one.

And that game is

Worms Armageddon

@brad Time to catch up on your Monty Python. Holy Grail and Life of Brian at least.

Life of Brian is one of the best satires/comedies ever burnt to celluloid.

I'm English and when I lived in the US for a couple of years people almost expected that kind of nonsense from me. We do say that kind of stuff for real here but to answer your question, yes... it gets played up for effect by people sometimes and as a Brit it is obvious to us when we see it happening. I see Danny doing it a bit when he's on the show with you guys too. Americans do the same in England ... It gives them an exotic caché.

It's always really got on tits that folks so easily lump Lemmings and Worms together when they're completely different, tiny sprites on destructible terrain aside.

It's particularly jarring for me when people that know what they're talking about do it.

I'm not particularly passionate about either game (but I had a school summer holiday that was fueled by the original Worms on PS1 back in the day), but I do wish knowledgeable folks wouldn't continue to perpetuate a silly comparison that's been inaccurate for as long as they've both existed.

This Quick Look had an inexplicable relaxing quality to it.

I have fond memories of playing Worms on PS1 with my cousin. I can't remember ever buying the games, they always just seemed to be around... Like someone from Team 17 would break into your house at night and leave Worms among your pile of games, all clandestine like. I'm sure of it.

I never understood why they made a game as charming, beautiful, and finely-tuned as Worms Armageddon, and then decided to utterly abandon the perfectly bouncy and slick physics engine and entrancing animation systems, in favor of a floaty and sticky physics engine and polygonal graphics straight out of Cloning Clyde.

I'm so glad they released Armageddon on Steam last year. It's been patched as recently as last year by deadcode, too. There's just no point in playing these new Worms games if you can play Armageddon.

Interesting post duder! As someone perpetually fascinated by culture and human diversity, I do think that playing up a non-threatening "other"ness can be a playful cultural experiment for the perpetrator, and contextually perhaps even a way to wink and nod that "we're all weird maybe we can be friends!" Cultural idiosyncrasies, even those that are largely projected for the enjoyment/annoyance of others are part of whats fun and dumb about the world. On top of that how could you not exploit the perceived "sexy" appeal of some of these traits, which you can emphasize as you see fit.

As an American and an occasional world-traveler I feel severely limited in that regard, personally haha. Though I'm from New York my accent is not, and in a culturally mixed environment I can get (probably irrationally) self conscious that I'm unsophisticated and bland. I mean, I could affect a terrible Southern drawl and start carrying a lasso...

I'm not sure if Brad was feigning ignorance or not but how can you not no what Worms is or how it plays? Is it really a EU > US thing like Jeff suggested? Pretty sure there was a time in the 90's when custom map packs for it used to be on every PC & Amiga magazine cover disk every month.

Oh brad, you are so lovably clueless at times.

Also no wonder neither brad or jeff are fans of worms when they seem to think it is a singleplayer game.

And thus my hopes of seeing a worms royal rumble on unprofessional fridays are forever dashed.

Worms 2 has always been where it's at for me. I played that game a ton when I was younger, and even though I had World Party and Armageddon as well from the "Worms Triple Pack", Worms 2 was always my favourite. I was excited when Revolution came out because it actually looked like it was going to change things up a bit, but I think they just made the game worse, and Clan Wars/Battlegrounds have done nothing to redeem it. Bad UI, bad performance, they took away the fun ninja rope physics, and they're missing some of the really ridiculous/fun weapons like the Iron Donkey and the Super Banana Bomb (though, those weapons were entirely overpowered, to be fair). If it ever goes for cheap enough, I'd like to pick up Reloaded at some point.

I want Moss to narrate the next one.

As long as he is narrating as the character I would pay an insane amount of money to hear a game narrated by Richard Ayoade.

@mysterysheep Team17 gets away with it largely because the older games have online communities that die off. If Xbox One / PS4 were backwards compatible, I feel like they wouldn't be as willing to just churn out another one this early.

They're totally ripping the piss these days - pump out a Worms game, hope to catch some nostalgia sales. Abandon. 6 months later, pump out a Worms game, hope to catch some nostalgia sales from a different group of people. Abandon. 6 months later...

There was one on XBLA which was good and is the best modern one, Worms Armageddon is still the best overall. And I assume Worms never really took off in the US as it did over here.

@brad Cucumber sandwiches are a refreshing summer food. You should try one. Here is how you make one.

Peal a cucumber.

Slice the pealed cucumber in 1/3 inch thick slices.

Take your favorite bread. (It works great on a Greek pita as well)

Put a thin coat of butter (or margarine if you like) on the bread.

Place the slices of cucumber down on the buttered bread.

Sprinkle a little bit of salt on top of the cucumber slices.

And eat.

My mom had a close friend from England and she use to make it for us when we went to the beach.

I mean, I could affect a terrible Southern drawl and start carrying a lasso...

I have a slight speech impediment slash accent that nobody else in my family has, and I regularly get asked where I'm from, and when they hear Southern California, most don't believe it. When I tell them I speak a little German, they generally accept that as being the reason for it, but honestly, I had my voice long before I ever learned my first German word. I actually had some speech training via cassette recordings of myself being played back to me, in order to make myself more easily understood. Anyway, one time in Belgium, I was standing outside a shop waiting for my sisters to come out and a passing British tourist mistook me for a local. She came up and, assuming I didn't speak English, started pantomiming and haltingly asking me something about geography. Keeping a straight face, I put on my best German accent and told her I spoke English. Turns out she wanted to know where the nunnery was. Sadly, I didn't even know there was a nunnery in town, so, still in character, I apologized and told her it was my first time in the city as well, but wished her luck.

On-topic, @fisk0 Gorillas and Liero are both fantastic, and I spent many many many hours playing both with my brothers growing up! I know it might seem weird to say, but Worms always seemed to me like a poor knockoff of Liero, even though it came first. Modding the game to have Chiquita Bombs that self-replicate and Missiles that trail Napalm was some of the most fun I've had in a multiplayer game, ever.

The vastest majority of Brits do not talk like that. It's a specific piss-take of the British upper class, who traditionally do have that fey gawkiness in their speech patterns.

I also want to chuck in more support for Hogs of War. From what I remember it played well (as well as a PS1 game could be expected to play), the sound design was solid, Rik Mayall was superb, and it had a good sense of humour, but it always looked a bit cack. Decent enough character models, but uninteresting map design and a supremely dull colour palette. Fun though, and proof for me the Worms gameplay worked really well in 3D.
