I own All-Star fighters, it cost me the princely sum of £2, and its technically Brad Shoemakers fault for introducing me to the Oneechanbara on an episode of On The Spot. I ended up getting a lot of the PAL releases of Simple Series games because of that episode of On the Spot...

The whole sequence of reactions after Jason did his super at the 47min 57sec mark really got me....

From the excitement of Jason pulling it off to the realisation that it's just a really slow moving projectile, Ben just looking at it with mild amusement and Jeff punctuating the whole thing with "Huh".

I'm convinced "All-Star Fighters" was developed by outer-space aliens. It was their version of the Voyager spacecraft -- basically saying, "Hello, Earthlings! Enjoy this glimpse into our society."

I watched about 20 seconds of All Star Fighter and knew it was so bad it would be near the bottom. I am glad that I wasn't disappointed???

“MIZUGUCHI WINS” is literally what I said when they announced Lumines for Switch.

That super flash into whiff near the end almost killed me.

I dare say that the whole gallery stuff is the reason why this game got delayed PAL Release. I bet the japanese version has more "poses". And some of those Ben showed are just ridiculous.

Man, so far it seems they've been choosing nothing but duds for anything past the PS1 era.

Was the fighting game genre really on hard times when 3D started being the thing?

@tonicbh: I mean... yes? PS2-era was a really bad time for fighting games.

@tonicbh: Kind of the opposite, at least for 2D games. Some of the actual best fighting games ever were coming out on the Saturn and Dreamcast, but they were all ports or upgrades of Capcom and SNK arcade games. Definitely an import fighting game golden age. They need to scrape the bottom of the barrel a bit more before they get to those.

PS. They will need to do Waku Waku 7 last, because otherwise the series ends with it since it is, scientifically, the best fighting game ever.

Maybe on the day they have an N64 specific Ranking the Fighters. Saw some footage of Flying Dragon and thought it looked neat for its time. Though I'm more eager for them to science this N64 fighter:

Its different to most fighters as it has a point system to reward you for doing things like Throws, Counters and special moves. It also has a fighting and dancing cow, which should work in favor of the science.

EDIT: Fighters Destiny will be in the next episode. My wish came true!

All-Star Fighters' brand of chintzy incompetence is the kind of weird nonsense I love seeing in this feature. Not sure if we'll see something that's weirder than Twin Goddesses anytime soon, but they're certainly making an effort to find the most obscure and semi-obscure fighting games I've never heard of.

I can't stop looking at the soda guy in the background of the NYC stage. That's totally Phil Collins from Trailer Park Boys.

Listen, I don't care if y'all use emulation on the site, but PS2 emulation still sucks too much to be scientific. Playing the real thing won't make All-Star Fighters a good game, but it does pretty drastically change its look in game and e.g. that first character isn't all glitched like she is here. It might run at a different speed too, though maybe I'm crazy about that.

(However, I was hoping that that screen shake was a result of emulation, and nope, someone actually thought it was a good idea. It makes this game unwatchable to me; I feel like I'm having a fucking mild seizure.)

Best GB series ever.

I'd like to see them review the original Dynasty Warriors. I always found it odd that the series never revisited the fighting game genre.

I'm such a dummy. I've been watching this series a while now and ordered the shirt (which looks great btw), and it never occurred to me until now that Ranking of Fighters is a play on King of Fighters. I can't remember if that was ever explicitly stated but.... I'm a dummy.
