Can you imagine how different talk would be around this thing if, say, the first two games in the package had received the Spyro/Crash treatment, full on remakes?

I'm feeling the pain jeff was feeling during sunshine x2.

That said I fucking love this collection. I don't need 64 to be up rezed to widescreen 60fps. I'm just happy to play all of these again without having to hook up a 64/gamecube/wii.

I'm really sad they didn't do more for it. But I suppose Nintendo knows what they are doing because I was more than happy to pay $60 to have all three of these games on my Switch, and am having a great time replaying these with my kids.

@mechsican: Me too, but if this was all they were going to do, they shouldn't have charged $60. The price tag just goes to show that Nintendo will continue to squeeze consumers for their nostalgia while putting in zero effort.

Hi, @brad! I realize you probably won't bother playing any more Mario Sunshine, but clicking in the right stick gives you an over-the-shoulder view that makes stationary precision shooting much more pleasurable. I say this as someone who hates the standard R-button method.

Sunshine is absolutely flawed in tons of ways, but the movement generally feels great and super satisfying once you learn some of the nuances and more advanced moves (the spin jump saves a lot of time on certain platforming sections, for example), and it might end up being somewhat enjoyable on a first playthrough if you commit to not getting every shine going in.

The lack of inverted controls is very, very annoying. They went through the trouble to change y-axis controls, but didn't bother to make it a toggle. I've only played a few hours of Mario 64 on this, and I had to fight my muscle memory every time I hopped in a cannon. It gets even dumber because the Wing Cap controls are still the same, so aiming the cannon isn't inverted anymore, but flying still is. It's very jarring.

Also, I already fall off of Sunshine quickly whenever I try to replay it. Taking out the inverted controls on FLUDD means I'll probably never bother this time.

I wanted a Super Nintendo for my first console, even though the PlayStation and N64 were out, because I had already played all the N64 hits at friends houses and I knew there were more Mario games to be played on the SNES (World and All Stars). My parents convinced me to get the PS1 because it was newer (probably the right call, not sure if SNES games were even sold at retail still), so when the GC came out I knew that would be my next console because there was no way I was going to miss out on the next Mario game.

Playing Sunshine for the first time was the most disappointing videogame related event of my childhood (followed by renting Star Fox Adventures). I'm not sure there's anything they could do to that game to make me want to give it another shot.

Mario Galaxy was great, but I don't need to play it or 64 again, especially in the state Nintendo is presenting them here. BUT Super Mario 3D Land is easily one of my favorite Mario games, so hearing that 3D World is coming to Switch (I didn't buy a Wii-U) has me ready to throw $60 at Nintendo regardless of the effort they put into the port.

As someone who never played a 3D Mario I am really enjoying this collection. As for the price Nintendo is still charging $60 for 3.5 year old Switch launch games, what could you expect?

Going back to 64 and Sunshine with this collection after not having played them since they originally came out as a kid, Sunshine is 100% a better game than 64. 64 is a more important game, but it has not aged well. Sunshine's movement feels way better and more precise, and it's camera is miles better than 64's. FLUDD also adds a lot of depth to the platforming you can do with Mario that wasn't matched until Odyssey.

Blue coins still suck though.

This collection was my first experience with Sunshine and I'm loving it so far. I expected to struggle with the controls since I don't play inverted, but everything just kinda clicked when I started it up. For context, the only 3D Mario games I've played through are 64 (on the DS) and Odyssey.

Collecting all the shines looked miserable on Steal My Sunshine so I don't think I'll bother with that, but I'm looking forward to just casually going through it.

The fact that they didn't port Galaxy 2 makes me so mad. I would literally buy it just for Galaxy 2 since I didn't get to play that on the Wii.

The whole reason I was looking forward to it was for Galaxy 2!! Goddamn, Nintendo.

Sunshine is fine, Jeff is wrong (except nobody can be wrong about their own opinion on something so existentially meaningless as a video game, it's basically the same as liking or not liking blue cheese or oranges or red fruit).

Dana Gould DOES deserve better.

That dude is still HILARIOUS.

And I could see them breaking these out and selling them piecemeal for something like $25. So the people who bought the bundle still "saved" but the people who JUST want Galaxy can have it.

I understand peoples dislike for Sunshine. It doesn't have the same polish gameplay wise as the other more celebrated Mario games. And those none Fluud levels can be brutal. With that said, I enjoyed Mario Sunshine a lot and if not for those camera issues and those punishing none Fluud areas, I'd say it was easily Top 3 best Mario game ever made.

But as we see, Nintendo knows their audience; They know their fans will buy anything they put out there. Mario 64 is a barebones port with some emulation filtering effects to make text and some other stuff look better. There are other ways you can play it and have full HD, correct 16:9 aspect ratio, and more. But the game has sold like crazy online anyway. And since the pattern has been established, expect more lackluster effort in their future old game ports.

I'm surprised how many people say that they did "nothing" to these games. Mario 64 looks so damn sharp when compared to the original. Better performance all around, too.

I wish the controls were tightened up a bit, I suppose, but it's still an N64 launch game. With that being said, I'd love a full on modern remake.

Nintendo has an updated version of 64 with the DS port and they couldn't even put that version in this. Just the laziest package Nintendo has done. They should really be disgraced by this. If they ever release any actual updated versions of these games, buyers of this package should get them for free.

More than anything what bugs me about this is the limited time aspect. This is how Nintendo gets people to pay $60 for 3 lackluster ports/emulations: FOMO. Otherwise, anyone sensible would just wait until it goes on sale, even if Nintendo puts first part stuff on sale extremely infrequently.

It's disgusting, but what's more disgusting is that it works because this apparently already sold extremely well :\

Does this mean abby can argue for mario galaxy come goty or will they hold the package against it and say super mario 3d all stars is bad. My wish came true. Abby can push for one if not the best mario games getting respect instead of constant love for the dated mario 64. Mario definitely gets the sonic treatment in that he had some great original games and people overlook ones that are bad or they never played and just think mario is perfect.

Was ben making a joke when he said the 3 most important mario games? Or do people think these games are actually comsidered good and better than super mario world, mario 1, and mario 3 which are the 3 mario games I think of? Not super mario sunshine one of the worst marios from watching dan and co play it here.

While it sucks that this is (apparently) only available for 6 months, I actually appreciate when compilations are released with original versions that are well emulated. As much as emulation seems fairly easy to loads of us involved in games in some way, how many people have time to commit to a deep cut of the hobby which regularly has pretty crappy documentation? Not many. A cartridge with original versions (or close to original) that fully work is very good for many more people, and the back-end has interesting stuff for emulator communities to rip apart to find use in going forward.

Then again, I'm one of those people who spent a lot of time with Rare Replay re-playing Atic Atac in HD...I guess I am one of the appreciators of media when it's shown in it's original form in an accessible manner. Like great Blu-Ray re-releases of forgotten films/films thought lost by Arrow Video or something. It's never a bad thing to show the past to a new bunch of people, in fact it's something that's too often dismissed in video games. New =/= better.

I do believe Jeff is on point by saying that there should be some save state options, and controller re-mapping functions and other common helps, because that is the biggest flaw across this cartridge. It wouldn't change the games, but would make them more approachable and accessible. I disagree with the idea Mario 64 or other older than x generation games are not as good to play though, because that's removing the context for a lot of their existences and sorta reinforces the 'new is better' capitalist media ideas. Most old games are good to play for some reason or another, particularly ones which are still incredibly highly polished and more than playable without requiring a remaster.

Anyway, some brief opinions on each of the games. :

Mario 64 controls slightly worse than the N64 version (another case of first party Nintendo games generally being designed for their controllers specifically, the analogue sticks on the Switch just aren't as accurate here) but is the best game on the cartridge in my 'familiarity and fun!' opinion. Level design is still great, the ability to choose to get different stars from the one you choose to do when entering the level etc make it freeing, compared to the other two games.

Mario Sunshine is a game I hugely dislike but the adjustments to the controls means it is way better on this compilation than it was on the Gamecube (where I completed it to try to work out why I didn't like it on disk & Dolphin a few times over the past 17/18 years).

Mario Galaxy is way nicer to control using a Pro Controller than a WiiMote for me, and while in a Brechtian sense it is a 10/10 game, it never really appealed to me beyond me thinking it's a decent platformer. It's still a near perfect game in a Brechtian sense, probably, but I never feel inspired to try it again. Another case of the Mario Odysseys. A good game but something's lacking when you compare it to other Mario games (New Super Mario Bros on the DS, Super Mario 3D World on the Wii U) from similar release times.

Mario 64 is almost 25 years old. in the years since this game came out, a lot of camera controls become refined and standardized. on one hand, it makes sense to try and improve the controls.. but to not give players the OPTION to change the camera controls (switch Y-axis up/down camera controls back to inverted like in original release), comes across like Nintendo have literally learnt NOTHING in giving players freedom to play how they wanna play, in the past 25 years.

i dunno why i'm surprised.. but i'm honestly shocked at how Nintendo slapped this shit together and charged full price for it 😟

there's always SOMETHING with Nintendo.

if it's any consolation. Galaxy is pretty much unplayable in Handheld mode.

the version released in China on the nvidia shield had let you control the motion cursor pointer with the right stick, and play comfortably with a gamepad.

if you play on .. let's say you own an official copy of Super Mario Galaxy on disc, and you've backed up the game onto your gaming PC.. if you play Galaxy on Dolphin, you're able to map the motion cursor pointer to the right stick and play comfortably with a gamepad.

the Nintendo Switch is 400 grams..

Nintendo's only method of playing Galaxy handheld is by mapping the motion controls > to touch controls, with no additional control options. The Nintendo Switch is 400 grams, and you're supposed to hold it one handed in your left hand and awkwardly tap the screen, while also using the left joycons to run around and control Mario??

it makes no sense. it makes no sense that Nintendo is charging full price for this 🤯🤯🤯

I know shitting on Mario Sunshine is a rite of passage on this site but I honestly think it holds up extremely well. The moveset alone is so intricate that most players will probably never even discover all of it’s nuances. The jetpack adds such an underappreciated level of precision to the platforming too.

Some of the collision detection bugs (I fell through a platform at least three times on my current playthrough) are a little harder to defend but I still think this is a very enjoyable game overall.

And honestly, it cannot be overstated how much the addition of 16:9 adds to the game. It makes the environments feel so much more open and inviting.

The tone of this video seems unnecessarily negative?

It's three classic and beloved Mario games you can take anywhere with you for $60. I love all three and still think they are fun and great in 2020.

If they remastered/remade them from the ground up, Nintendo would definitely charge $60 each.

As someone who never played 64 or Galaxy, I had no problem paying full price for this. Some companies offer more when remastering their games, some don't. I don't expect anything beyond the visual improvements but anything else is nice.

Not everyone will give it the Capcom museum treatment or allow you to flip between old and updated graphics. There is no standard.

They're weirdly vindictive about this thing. It isn't the greatest package but it's what we get if we want to play any of these Mario games on the Switch.

It took me about 20 minutes to get acclimated to the controls/camera in Mario 64; taking into account that it's a 24 year game it's still golden.
