Aww yeah, those patented Wolfteam explosion sounds. Sol-Feace was so great, one of my favorite Sakuraba soundtracks.

Anyway, Vice seems like real a hidden gem. Never ever heard of it.

I played a lot of this when I was a kid. It's definitely up there as one of my favourite games that came from seeing it in a video game magazine..

Some similar kinda-not-well-known games from this NES-era that I remember from magazines and were awesome included:

Shadow of the Ninja

Metal Storm

Power Blade

Shatterhand

Hope they look at some of these in the future - and holy shit I just remembered about StarTropics.

WHY DON'T MORE PEOPLE TALK ABOUT STARTROPICS.

Oh that's like a serious run of late 80's Nintendo Power cover games. I was recently really debating whether to go through them chronologically seeing how insane they'd be.

Fuck yeah, Shatterhand.

With regard to StarTropics and its follow up, they appear to have been released for WiiU recently!

@danryckert try playing link to the past and going in an area with lots of guards. especially when you wind up your sword. it also happens against some bosses. that's some classic slowdown. i actually like it because it makes the game easier to play in parts when there'a lot going on. not like most modern slowdown in games.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this in the past, but the first level of Vice is extremely similar to an earlier '86 Master System title I used to play as a kid, "Action Fighter" esp. once you upgrade past the motorcycle. The car behavior, barricades, missile style, and truck are too similar to be a coincidence. - Awesome series, keep up the good work.

Love it. Vice is a cool game. For a fun old game, I would love to see Black Belt for the Sega Master System visited at some point. It's a bit like Karateka and Kung-Fu Master, but more of a successor, with its exploding enemies, high energy levels, and tricky boss fights that ended with awesome finishing moves.

@danryckert Checked it on Steam because I had to. From goddamn Software made Ninja Blade. For some reason I find that difficult to believe, but there you go.

@astrophyle: Blackbelt was the shit - Boss fights were like mini vignettes because your character sprites would be larger than the rest of normal game play. I fondly remember that 80's graffiti.

I've actually got the cart of Earnest Evans! I've never made it past level one. The movement always seems really finicky and loopy and loose.

But Alisia Dragoon has always been such a great, badass game. So cool.

Shame they didn't play the Sega CD version of Earnest Evans, as it has really cheesy anime cutscenes.

Well you're in luck - they are all still freaking awesome (I'm dipping into all of them right now).

Metal Storm is seriously legit. The gravity-flip mechanic is still totally ace. Eat your heart out, VVVVVVVV.

So glad to see this feature back! Earnest Evans is actually the first game in a trilogy of games that Wolf Team did. El Viento was the second in the trilogy. The third one was never released in the US.

As soon as I looked up Vice: Project Doom, I knew I'd seen it recently. The last time I saw it, though, it wasn't fetching $30 - $50.

What the hell happened? Did some famous YouTuber stream it? According to Pricecharting, Vice only shot up within the last few years, which sounds about right since it was under $10 last time I saw it.

@missashley: I was going to say it shot up after this stream but you said it happened in the last few years. I don't know...

Wow that genesis earnest game was weird....to bad not one of the good genesis games (those were mostly RPGs). Jeff probably never played those but Super Hylide was legit interesting ... and the dark souls of RPGs (hides from tomatoes).

I hate to tell you but I tried to watch earnest goes to camp as an Adult a few years ago...does not hold up...at...all...leave that one in your memory untainted. Man kid movie taste man... kid movie taste...

@adequatelyprepared: I remember at the time thinking that it was fitting. From had been making a ton of RPG's for PS2 so it felt right they would start their PS3 lineup with an RPG like Demon's Souls, while their Xbox lineup was far more action focused with the Otogi games and two action focused mech titles (compared to the more sim/strategy focused Armored Core titles they had made for Playstation systems). So they continued with that action focus with Ninja Blade. I believe both games were announced at the same TGS and I recall people arguing over which platform had gotten the better exclusive, with almost everyone siding with Microsoft as Ninja Blade demoed far better than Demon's Souls. Of course a decade later we know that everyone had it wrong at the time, but I recall people bashing Sony for getting another crappy exclusive while Microsoft got the "next Ninja Gaiden".

So weird how the US were into these types of games and the Nes/Snes. Here in the UK I don't remember much hype for them, most people had an Amiga or Megadrive. People generally weren't into Mario or Zelda or any of that stuff either, like I speak to my peers here and no one talks about Mario, they always talk about their Amiga or Streets of Rage on the Megadrive.

The Amiga was so good though, I wouldn't have been into gaming much if I was forced to play consoles at that time. The Playstation is the only console I ever got into, that's because development for it was so easy and cheap thanx to Sony not being Nintendo and CDs. There were so many weird new genres and crazy little games, it felt very Amiga like in that way which consoles never felt before.

The PS2 lost me however and I've just been PC ever since.

I really struggle to get into Japanese games, Nintendo or consoles in general really. Funny how where you grew up changes things, these guys will say Mario World is the best game ever, but I just think it's boring. I'd say like Sensible Soccer or Roller Coaster Tycoon are the best games ever...
