Unfinished: 20XX 09/17/2015

Soul nuts can buy you a lot of things, but probably not a good copyright lawyer.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Somewhere an intellectual copyright lawyer is getting triggered.

On a serious note, those bosses look really boring and easy. Just my opinion.

I wonder how long it takes for the copyright lawyers to scoop in on this. Or if they even bother at all.

Whatever. It's not like Capcom is doing anything with Megaman and this game's level design is not really like any of the Megaman games. I'll probably pick this up.

I just wish it didn't have all the dumb references in it's power ups. I really wish some devs would just stop doing stuff like that. Make things inspired by but go beyond those inspirations. It's not clever or cute to put in a mario hat or portal potato. "We play video games but also make them." Yes. We know. You can be more creative than that.

I'm like, 98% certain that is it Binding of Isaac that is responsible for this resurgence in rogue-likes and not Spelunky. The stacking passive items thing is also straight out of Risk of Rain.

@adequatelyprepared: Well both started off as Flash games before becoming what they are now. I think Spleunky came out first though.

I love Mega Man X. No, no... I LOVE Mega Man X. I did not get a loving vibe from this at all. The Rogue-Like aspect might be sort of interesting, but I didn't like the design of anything in this game and the music seemed pretty bland.

My first reaction was "Why is the character's head facing that direction?" as well. Just seemed like a really poor flash game. :(

Some pretty gross cynicism in these comments, in pretty stark contrast to how fun the quicklook was. Having played a fair bit of 20XX, I'll say it's probably the closest thing we're going to get to a Megaman X sequel. It plays like an alternate universe Megaman X 4, where scientists experimenting with time travel saw forward to the resurgence of the rogue-like genre and the X series veered off in that direction, instead of the crazy anime course it took in our universe.

Speaking of copyright infringement, anybody else notice that was straight-up the Heavy's minigun from TF2?

@d_w: Yeah, it's a weird thing where indy developers feel like they need to show off their "geek cred" -- but the pop culture references they think they're giving a wink and a nod to are common knowledge references to shows or videogames that literally millions of people are already familiar with.

Cool that they did a QL of this. The art style is not the strongest, but it plays pretty damn well.

I backed this waaaaay back in 20xx... I mean 2014, when it was still Echoes of Eridu. I get people who feel it looks "low-rent", but look how little the original campaign brought it. I think they've done a pretty good job for a project that almost got scuttled due to the team all still needing to work real-ass jobs while making it.

Also it feels pretty good to actually play, so that helps a ton.

@m2cks: An homage requires some level of re-interpretation. This game straight-up takes the exact design, style, and characteristics from the TF2 minigun and uses it (presumably without permission) in the game.

As someone that really liked the Megaman X series, the Megaman Zero series, and just any Megaman game with Zero, this is totally right up my alley.

Actually now that I think of it, why don't people talk about the Megaman Zero games that much? I thought they were great - were they not very well received? Or was it just a limitation because it was only on the GBA?

I don't know how others perceived it, but I loved it's high difficulty and art design, which was a far cry away from the original Megaman stuff.

Played this at Pax Prime and it felt really good. Not quite as good as OG MMX but as someone who annually plays through at least X-X3 (sometimes 4 if I'm bored) 20XX is pretty great.

I don't really believe in Early Access so I will wait until it's finished to keep playing it but I am super excited for this.

Despite my earlier comments, I do think this looks like a rad game. On top of having what seems like very solid core gameplay (how movement + attacking controls) it has a good pattern of giving the player upgrades. A lot of rogue-lite games often fail in that aspect, with upgrades either coming far too frequently or not often enough. I'll look into buying this, I'm a sucker for rogue-lite stuff.

I'm actually liking this game a little less the better I get at it. I'm starting to feel like if you don't knock ALL of the skytemple bosses out as soon as possible you can get screwed hard as the stages get harder as you beat bosses and those levels specifically can have configurations of traps that are as close as possible to being impossible to pass as you can get.

Then you get to a boss and beat it in like 15 seconds because all the bosses are stupidly easy regardless of how far you are

That said it's still a really neat game that feels pretty great to actually play when you start getting a feel for it and unlocking some of the better items.

Looks really great, surprisingly. And hell, if Capcom won't do it then I'm glad someone is taking a fresh spin on these classic mechanics.
