Catacomb Kids were way better than Kris Kross

Jeff needs to practice his byat-tech.

This looks like it could be something to get into at some point. Looks pretty early right now.

I think there's an inherent problem with applying roguelike ideas to action games, though. Having incredibly harsh mechanics and permadeath seems to work a bit better in a turn-based system where you have time to think things through. Still curious about this.

This looks quite interesting. Guess I'll give it a shot once it comes out.

This is a great little gem. Been having a lot of fun with it. It's super unforgiving and harsh but as you get better at it you start to react to everything a lot faster. You can carefully inch your way through the levels, but sooner or later shit will hit the fan and you gotta be able to think on the fly. It's a lot like Spelunky, with some Dark Souls mixed in.

There are a lot of not-so-obvious moves and tricks you can do. I like running around with a rock so I can jump at orcs to pin them down to the ground while using the rock to smash them. Amazing depth of gameplay.

Well this is giving a huge Rogue Legacy feel from the artstyle, I actually thought it was the same Devs.

I wasn't expecting much from this game, but as soon as I realised that you could eat the corpses of everything you kill, a-la OG NetHack, I knew I was in for the long-haul.

The music on that first level sounds a ton like Mine, Windbag, Mine from Bastion.

Slime + Rat.... = Gut-bomb.

Man i'm so done with this pixel shit. Game looks really cool from a gameplay perspective, so I might play it regardless... but can we please stop having stuff look like crap as a valid design choice? Layering everything with this blur of pixels is an artistic cop-out.

I feel like singing that All in the Family theme song, things were better with TNT.

I almost never buy games before they're out, but I'll keep an eye on this one. Looks really promising.

I saw this pop up on Steam a few days ago and wasn't too sure about it, but this actually looks pretty rad.

@clush: It's as much a crutch for limited resources as it is a design decision. I've been dabbling in working on a game in my spare time and pixel graphics (when done a certain way) is WAY faster to iterate on than fully hand-drawn 2d graphics. This is key for me since hand drawing graphics and making them look nice takes too much of my very limited spare time.

I actually love this game. I've already put 7 hours into it. Nethack mashed up with a more actiony Spelunky is a dream come true.

I planned on buying this before, but man, this looks better than I hoped!

Intentional as it is, the game is just too dark for me (literally).

@pakattak: I suppose, I suppose. However, a cop-out for the right reasons is still a cop-out and at this point it's getting pretty tired. If you look at Spelunky (HD) or Super Meat Boy, that I can deal with. Stuff like this is really pushing it, as far as I'm concerned.

This was a lot of fun to watch (game looks cool and Jeff seemed to be enjoying himself); wish this QL would have been about twice as long. :)

@clush: I totally agree with you that pixel-art is too prevelent, but on the other side, if a programmer wants to make a game and he has amazing gameplay ideas but just doesn't have the skills / funds to get some great art in his game, i rather have him get the game out with pixel art than him not getting the game out at all, or having to gimp it to save funds for an artist.

This looks amazing aside from being so low resolution.

I saw an article about Catacomb Kids a while back and when Vagante went up for sale I thought it was Catacomb Kids and bought it and I am sad that I mis-purchased something that looks literally the same.

Edit:AAHHHH As I watch this video the similarities to Vagante just pile up and up and seeing Catacomb Kids just do everything better is making me sadder and sadder.

ETA: Not half as good on these later verses, but it was an excuse not to work for a few minutes.

This seems really neat. I'll probably get it once it leaves Early Access.

I'll be way into this if it comes out on Vita.
