Everyone knows that the biggest danger in space are germs.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Is this the same company that made rimworld? I really enjoyed that game. The art style and game mechanics look very similar.

@wowzerzz: No, Rimworld is by someone else, but these devs made another popular survival game - Don't Starve, as well as platformers like Shank and Mark of the Ninja.

Don't starve was such a obtuse weird thing in comparison to this. I tried them in reverse order and still feel oxygen is about 5000 percent more interesting and 5000 percent less confusing. This game is very fun.

The wires are breaking because you have a higher power total than what the small wires can handle. In other words, you are putting some much electricity into your system that it is going up in flames.

The solutions is to separate into smaller power networks.

Yes Dan, you drink poop water. More so, there's poop water inside of you, it's in your blood and in your cells.

This looks like a pretty good dwarf fortress like(survival management sim?). I think its kinda cool that it focuses on creating networks and systems instead of characters like in DF and I think Rimworld. Usually I think thats the most annoying part of these games but the UI in this looks pretty good and looks easier to manage.

The thing that makes this game amazing is all the background physics simulation etc they got going. It looks like a cutesy base-builder at first, but you can do a lot of cool "science stuff" in this game.

This game is so good! Also, Klei's weekly stream on Twitch is really excellent. They go over new features, sometimes they have their sound engineer on (he's great), or they do draw-alongs with their artists. It is worth checking out.

I gave this a real quick glance on Steam after hearing Pat Rothfuss mention it somewhere, but I didn't quite get what it was for some reason. Seconds into this I (Like many others) went, "Oh, it's Rimworld with a different look." I like Rimworld a lot, so I'm going to keep an eye on this and see hoe development progresses, but what was shown here looks really cool.

@danryckert There's a finite amount of water on the planet. Every drop you drink was once coming out of someone's butt or urinated out of a t-rex.

The same applies to the atoms in the air we breathe.

If you like this game, but maybe in a different setting, Craft the World is phenominal and basically the same premise, but with dwarves and digging. Craft the world is such a wonderful game and very addicting!

These are the kind of games that could be assigned for a class. I'm talking for an elective, probably for high school. It's intelligent and teaches basics on different kinds of systems, be it potable water, recycled and waste, electrical. chemical and so on. As long as science and such is correctly represented at least in spirit.

Btw, I do not know if reclaimed water is allowed back into potable supply here in the U.S. It's usually, unless code has changed in some principalities, used for grey water use (urinal and toilet, perhaps laundry) and irrigation. For progress I'm willing to be wrong.

To be fair to Dan, I don't know of any water treatment plant in the country that converts raw sewage into drinking water, and then puts it directly back into circulation for human consumption. Even the treatment plants that are advanced enough to purify it all the way back to consumable just pump it back into the environment because the idea of drinking something that was so recently filthy is off-putting to people.

As we move into the future and fresh water continues to become scarce, this will obviously change. But poop water is many, many steps removed from being consumed, which I think is what Dan was asking.

Since Dan has forced his colleagues to play Mario Party, Sunshine and Soul Caliber, he could have no complaints if he was forced to play Dwarf Fortress for a Giant Bomb series. Dan trying to wrap his brain around the DF interface would make great content.

Dan flying to Duna in Kerbal would also be acceptable.

Great video! Just in case anyone reads this far down the comments, here is some knowledge I've gleaned from just over 100 hours in this game. By no means an expert, but these are things I wish I knew! I'm going it all in a spoiler block so I don't have to post a giant wall of text!

First, as Vinny found out, the Water Purifier doesn't remove germs, it just converts Polluted Water back into regular Water. In order to remove the germs, you have to do some other stuff to it, usually by heating it. There are some interesting guide for this online! I feel like it's more complicated than it should be, because a Boiler should just be a building that you can construct. But for right now, we have to get creative! I usually use a Liquid Tepidizer to raise the temperature of the water; eventually, the germs start dying off reasonably quickly. Usually around 160 degrees Fahrenheit, if I remember correctly. There are more fun ways to do it, like flash-steaming a slow drip-feed of it, because Polluted Water turns into Steam, dropping some Dirt, and when it cools it becomes regular water. But that requires dealing with cooling that much Steam down, which can be a pain. Eventually, the temperature of your base will rise uncomfortably high unless you're careful. So I usually just heat up the water until it's sterile, and then feed it into the Water Purifier.

Second, as someone mentioned previously, each type of wire can only handle a certain amount of power. Normal wires can accommodate 1000W before they start overloading. So you have to separate your power networks to not go over this amount. Conductive Wire can handle more power, but requires Refined Metal. The Power Transformer can also help, because it will bump down power fed into it. So if you have four Natural Gas Generators, it'll total to 3200W. Connect those with Heavi-Watt Wire, and feed that wire into the Transformer. That'll bust it down to 1000W so you can use regular Wire to power your base. I usually have a Transformer for each floor of my base, and a Large Battery backup for if power gets cut. The Large Battery is way more efficient than the Small Battery, so try to use those more if you can!

Third, gases behave differently! You probably knew this, but something I didn't know is that Hydrogen, in general, tends to want to not only rise, but flow towards the left! Carbon Dioxide does the reverse; it sinks under pretty much every gas, and tends to flow to the right of the map. My pet theory is that this has to do with the rotation of the asteroid, but I have literally no reason to think this! It just sounds right to me somehow. But you can use this information to better plan how your gases will move through your base. If Vinny put the pump feeding his Hydrogen Generator in the left corner of that room, he'd get more of the Hydrogen. Similarly, if you make your Carbon Dioxide Storage Pit on the right side of your base, you'll have an easier time getting it to all go that way.

Related to the previous point, Carbon Dioxide is a sterile gas! The main way I have found to make use of this fact is that food doesn't go bad if it is entirely submerged in CO2! So rather than using all of your power to have Refrigerators holding all of your food, just put a food storage room where your CO2 gathers. I have like 300,000 kcal of food stored right now, because I just keep building fridges in the bottom right corner of my base. That room fills with CO2, and when all of the Oxygen is pushed out, the food doesn't go bad inside anymore! I don't know if this is a bug they intend to fix eventually, but it's worked that way for a while, so I assume it's on purpose! And you don't even need to use any electricity to do it! Just make sure no Oxygen makes it's way down there, or any Water drips into there! When I've had leaks from destroying pipes, the Water moves onto the Fridge's tile, and it makes the food start to go bad because of the way the game's liquid and gas physics works.

And related to that, if you're using Meal Lice as your main food source, know that Meal Lice grows just as well in CO2 as it does in Oxygen! So if you fill up your farm room with CO2, then even if you don't have enough room to store the food when it's done growing, it'll just sit on the tile and not go bad!

If I remember anything else that sounds useful I might chime in again. Hope this helps anyone!

If you're the kind of person that washes hands before going to the bathroom & afterwards, maybe don't go starting an underground civilization.

Thank you Vinny for purifying the water before you drop it in a pool of bad water ;)
