Unprofessional Fridays: 03/20/2015

Drew wants to ride bikes, Dan challenges another obstacle from his youth, Brad is haunted by his youth, and Jeff dons a hard hat and goes cave diving. Why? Cause it's Friday.

The end of the week is here! You made it! Let's sit back, relax, and close the week out in style with some video games.

One of my favorite moments is when Drew makes a funny and Rorie is the only one who laughs, so much that his rib begins to hurt and Drew seems amused.

Also when Drew was playing Besiege instead of paying attention to Spelunker Z, and failed spectacularly and started darting his eyes back and forth to see if anyone else saw.

When Brad's old review starts playing, Dan spends at least a couple minutes looking at him in a combination of bewilderment and awe.

@rorie Wow I have the exact same pain in the same place you have when I sneeze and move...except the pain has been here FOR MONTHS. I thought it would go away but it never did. I also got an x-ray and they have no clue, they gave me muscle relaxers but that shit makes me sleepy. I have to get an MRI so I have no clue what is going on, at least i'm alive though.

The fixed gear thing is pretty weird, I ride one around LA and have been made fun of loads of times because I have a brake. They're an odd bunch of people, on the other hand its really easy to stop a fixie without a handbrake but you'll end up spending a small fortune on replacement tires.

Acetaminophen is surprisingly easy to overdose on, especially relative to it's availability, and it's not a fun overdose. You die slowly of liver failure. Turns out when you metabolise acetaminophen, there's an enzyme in the liver that cleans up a resulting toxic metabolite. The problem is that that can be depleted quite quickly, and then you end up with toxic metabolites that destroy the liver not being cleaned up. If you imagine that alcohol also keeps the liver busy, you're going to increase the toxicity if you take both, but in truth there isn't that large an increase in toxicity and if you're sticking to therapeutic amounts of acetaminophen you won't increase your risk of toxicity from even moderate to large amounts of alcohol, unless you're a chronic alcoholic. And fortunately, there's an antidote that's very effective if administered in the first 6 hours, so it's all cool.

What you guys want to be careful about with Ibuprofen is taking it without food. Because of the way it works, you can cause stomach ulcers when taking without food, which have a potential to rupture and cause potentially fatal amounts of blood loss. And there's no antidote for that.

So Acetaminophen is safer than you're suggesting unless you're taking a hell of a lot of it (and there are patients on stronger formulations of it for osteoarthritis that take more than your standard daily limit quite safely) and despite concomitant consumption of alcohol, whereas Ibuprofen is more dangerous than you seem to understand. Good to be cautious, but largely unnecessary for normal use.

Bonus tip: They have different mechanisms of action, so you can alternate between the two. You can take both at the same time, or alternate every two hours so you're effectively maintaining 4 hours between doses of each respective medication, but receiving pain relief every two hours.

Oh man egg tarts are so good. You can get them in KFCs in China (as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan I believe) for really cheap and they're one of my favorite things.

Edit: Totally been to Golden Gate bakery. Not sure how they would go over with you guys but the moon cakes there are worth checking out. Dan might not like them though.

I can ride my bike and pretty much turn in most corners without my hands. And I'm not showing off, I just like to do it. And I only ever drive on bike lanes. And I'm always ready to grab the handlebars.

But there's a LOT of asshole cyclists.

Also: Old Brad looks like he came from the future to teach Young Brad about the Robot apocalypse.

It is only a fixie if the rear wheel is tied to the pedals and you are unable to coast. If you can coast but can't change gears it is a single speed bike. You can ride a fixed gear without brakes because you are always able to slow down by resisting the rotation of the rear wheel with your legs through the pedals. However you can not stop nearly as fast as a fixed gear with a front brake. So it is unsafe and a bad idea.

I was a bicycle messenger for 5 years and I road several fixies with a front brake while I worked there. I never crashed in to anything or anyone and was never more then scraped when crashing my bike. I agree people flying through intersections expecting cars or pedestrians to get out of their way are assholes.

I do know why Dan hates people who ride without holding on to their handle bars. However you can have a lot of control over where your front wheel is pointing by how you are balanced on your bike. I find people who ride around a lot without holding on to their handle bars have a bike or handle bars that don't fit them very well and are uncomfortable. I rode around for a long time and always tried to not hold on to my handle bars. Then that bike broke and I got one that fit me better.

Yeh pretty much, he complains about the lock on while he was running away when all he had to do was tap R1 to unlock. It does take some getting used to, but its a blast once you get a feel for it. Can't wait to see how it is in the final game with all the magic and hopefully tonnes of weapons to switch between.

On a similar note, I had an acquaintance who had previously been addicted to ibuprofin. When he first told me, I thought he was kidding, but it was a big deal. He seriously damaged his stomach when taking large amounts to compensate for a sports injury when he was in high school, and was still dealing with the consequences a decade later.

I rode a fixie for a while and while its a fun trick bike I don't know why anyone would ride it for longer distances - especially messengers. It's fun to do track stands at red lights or try to go backwards, wheelies etc cause of the power you have over the back wheel. Other than that it's tiring to have the pedals keep spinning for longer rides, stopping by locking the backwheel will generally make you skid for long distances, going downhills can be tiring, and taking sharp turns is a big no no because your pedal will strike the ground and make you fall.

For people that want a nice slim track bike without the hassle of gears a single speed is great. Fixed gears are fun to ride in the same capacity as a skateboard - short distances and mostly fun for tricks.
