I think the Nightmare is maybe the only truly egregious thing in Prey; there's actually no way to permanently kill it, so every time it would show up I'd just haul ass for the exit or hunker down in a room too small for it to get to me. In the end it's either a pain that soaks up either resources or time, or both.

If @rorie or @jeff need some tips on Prey...

It sucks that Prey is looked at as a first-person shooter when in reality it's as much a puzzle game in that it rewards experimentation. As you gain more abilities and weapons, learning how to put them to use is really key to making enemies manageable. If you're having trouble taking something down, odds are you are either missing a tool/weapon or are overlooking something in your inventory. Or you didn't fill out the weapon damage tree. Always fill that out.

(and if you're REALLY struggling, you can always take the upgrade that allows you to slow combat down to a crawl)

As for alien upgrades, the only essential ones IMO are the mimic ability, which makes traversing certain blockades to find alternate routes and hidden items very easy - just make sure to keep a spare banana on you at all times - and the psychoshock ability which basically just causes a flat amount of damage which is good for softening up tougher enemies when used in tandem with the rest of your arsenal. These two are great utilities that you can take without having turrets and things turn on you.

Finally, in addition to the mimic ability, liberal use of the GLOO gun and Recycler Charges is great for creating paths for yourself over obstacles or for clearing away large objects blocking certain doors and hallways.

Motion controls are good if implemented properly. I think the Wii and all its shovelware, as well as MS and Sony's rush to implement their own, really spoiled the concept by putting so much emphasis on it and utilizing it so poorly. Gyro aim on the steam controller and the Switch is fantastic for fine precision. Obviously some decisions aren't the best, such as in portable mode in Mario, or when they limit accessibility, but I hate that the concept gets trashed on the whole all the time.

The Tomorrow Children related: I really wonder how expensive and how hard would it be to do sorta an offline patch for all these online/always online games, so you could continue to play offline. I always wish MMOs would get patches like that. "Hey we're finished with support and shutting down servers, but here's a patch, if you want to play alone offline forever, you can still do that." Sure online games are meant to be played with other people, but then again I often play and treat MMOs as single player games. I played Elder Scrolls Online solo and basically treated it as TES 6. I really wish it would be a standard practice to make all online games playable offline after support and servers shut down.

On the topic of MGSV - I was really into that game, but literally the day after I hit level 20 and unlocked FoB raids they turned the servers for that thing on and I never went back.

@rorie: Like chat said, if you don't mind obtaining alien powers, then definitely get Psychoshock. It's easier to use than Nullwave grenades, deals a decent amount of damage, and more importantly, disables Typhon's abilities.

These guys get hung up on the smallest things. I've played a handful of hours and gotten over 100 moons so far and I didn't even know about those weird motion hat throws. They seem very unnecessary.

I honestly wanted to like The Tomorrow Children. The problem? The god damn slide puzzle mechanic, skippable via microtransaction.

That was evil.

Holy crap, seeing Rories inventory in Prey was a OCD nightmare, organize that stuff man!!! Please!!!!

And also that games on my GOTY list for sure, along with Hollow Knight, another game that didn't get much praise on this site but is totally worth it.

Also you can just use the laser gun to cheese nightmare and made it a easy fight.

With the right upgrades and weapon choice most of the combat in the game becomes a joke. When I first ran into the Nightmare I pretty much one-shot it into its butt from stealth using an upgraded shotgun and the +dmg perks for weapons and +dmg from stealth.

As it reappears it kept getting more HP, but nothing the same tactic couldn't handle, it only got me one time when it was waiting at the exit of an elevator and the elevator exiting animation put me right into it. It drops a lot of exotic materials but later in the game, and with liberal shotgun/pistol use, it's the synthetics that become the limiting resource for manufacturing neuromods.

Imho it looking like yet another first-person shooter, with the neat gimmick of enemies morphing into enviormental objects ala object hunt, and it then turning out to be so much more, is one of the reasons why the game leaves such an lasting impression for many people.

When I started playing I didn't expect the game to turn out to be a System Shock like thing with heavy homages to Half Life and some really interesting enviormental gameplay. The goo gun is so much more than just freezing dudes, it's kinda like this games gravity gun (more homage) and it's probably got one of the coolest endings I've seen in a game for a while.

I love the mention of Tricky Towers, Tetris with weird physics is right! That game is fantastic.

It's a shame about The Tomorrow Children. I was always getting Japanese emails about it, so I thought it was popular there. I guess not!
