VinnyVania: Rondo of Blood - Part 05

Awesome play through as always.

As much as I am dying to see symphony of the night, I kind of want to see bloodlines first and save the best for last

quick upload!! And I hope Bloodlines is next, that's actually my favorite non-RPG vania game.

Other, lesser-known traditional Castlevanias they could try playing:

Castlevania Chronicles - released on the PS1, it's a remake of a Castlevania game made for the X68000 computer. It also includes the original version of the game. The main differences between the two are the music and the graphics. I think the save file for one version works with the other. I prefer playing it in original mode. There's even a code for the original version that allows you to choose which emulated sound card you want to play it with.

Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth - Technically a remake of the first Game Boy Castlevania, but it's pretty much a remake in name only. It came out on WiiWare. This game actually came out in 2009, making it the most recent traditional 2D Castlevania. I played through it last year. It was OK. Definitely no Rondo of Blood.

Have they decided when they're ending this series? The Soma Cruz Castlevania's are pretty good, and just different enough that I'd really like to see at least Aria of Sorrow.

The problem with Bloodlines, if I remember correctly, is that it has finite continues and no passwords. So unless Vinny is able to beat the entire game in one session on his first few continues, they are going to have to use save states, which they have been avoiding up until now.

Not a big deal, in my view, but maybe moreso for others.

I don't know what sparkling water you drink @alex, but if you haven't tried La Croix, I highly recommend it.

Bloodlines doesn't get enough love. It's a great Castlevania game.

Yep, there are indeed finite continues, but you are given a password after the completion of each stage.

Max's Mario Maker levels are indistinguishable from half of the stuff people upload.

@takoyaki: You're okay - he played about the first 3 minutes of Dark Souls III before it crashed and he switched to a different game.

As for this video, watching the guys play through Max's levels was an absolute joy!

Nice change of pace from Ryckert's pretty, focus-tested levels. I hope Vinny could interview Max about his level design philosophies.

Fuckin' modern games all hold your hand and actually boot up and are playable!

The soul-collecting bits of the Sorrow games are so good, even if it does make them a little grindy. The castle in Dawn of Sorrow is also one of my favourite Castlevania castles, especially once you unlock Julius and can bust the progression wide-open. Those games are filled to the brim with awesome stuff.

Of course Maria is a Jojo's character, half of Japanese pop culture characters from 86 to 06 were. :P

The alternate levels are really cool and when you just complete the game normally you've only really seen half the game.. but I'm happy that they played through as much as they did.

@yummytreesap: Oh yeah, I think I remember now! It was a tiny-ass grid, and it's different from other castlevanias because it appears at the end of a level, rather than when you died. The finite continues could still be an annoyance, but it hopefully won't be a deal breaker if they can just re-enter the password.

It was pretty adorable seeing some of Max's levels. Heck I'd say that's more interesting than watching adult-made levels even.
