It Truly would be a Crime to not play Sleeping Dogs (sorry) 1

It is safe to say that Sleeping Dogs has had a difficult journey up to it's release. The open-world crime game originally began development in 2008 as part of Activision's True Crime series. It was subsequently canceled 3 years into development, and it seemed that the game would never make it to store shelves. Then in August 2011, publisher Square Enix announced that they would be picking up the title under the new name Sleeping Dogs, scheduled for release in 2012. So now the game is out, which ...

    A solid game 1

Sleeping dogs is a solid game - there isn't anything it does badly and plenty of things it does very well. No, it won't light the world on fire, but for a game that was very nearly cancelled, it has done well for itself.THE STORY:The main draw for sleeping dogs is not the open world mechanics - other games have done it before. It's not the combat - other games have done it better. It's not the graphics - which are good, but won't make your jaw drop. No, the main draw for Sleeping dogs is the set...

A fantastic, high-octane romp through Hong Kong 0

Lets get this out of the way first, Sleeping Dogs has a few missteps. Not many, but some small technical glitches and minor annoyances, but these are as I said - minor. It is a hugely fun and enjoyable game that marries a serious Hong Kong cinema styled cop story with great mechanics in a fully realized open world. Hong Kong itself is the true star with it's blend of overall size yet attention to detail. There are highways and long windy roads and getting from one side to the other makes it feel...

The Surprisingly Good Sleeping Dogs 1

Even before Activision dropped it, it was hard to imagine that Sleeping Dogs -- a game once set to be a reboot of the True Crime series -- would actually be good. The series itself is perhaps best known for trying (and failing) to capture the lightning in a bottle that is Rockstar's open-world juggernaut Grand Theft Auto series. Couple that with developer United Front Games whose only video game credit comes in the form the kart racer Mod Nation Racers, and cause for concern was fairly reasonabl...

    Sleeping Dogs Review 0

When looking back on open world games that have expanded upon the Grand Theft Auto template in the last few years, its hard to recall one that has truly succeeded in each individual part of its gameplay. Open world games have always been praised for their ability to give you freedom in atmospheric worlds that convey and sense of time and place, but often struggle in providing compelling mechanics that make you want to experience all there is to offer in that world. With Sleeping Dogs, I expected...

This cover really did draw me to the gameSleeping Dogs is the spiritual successor to the True Crimes series. That’s all you really need to know, other than it was in kind of a development Hell scenario for years. Eventually, Square Enix bought up the right to the game, but not the True Crime name, this Sleeping Dogs, a gritty undercover cop drama set in Hong Kong, was born. Without further stalling for word count and time, let us dig into this most unique of dishes: an open-world crime-based gam...

Originally True Crime Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs was the game that Activision essentially canceled. Square Enix and United Front saw potential in the nearly completed game, and decided to bring it back from the brink and rework elements that they hoped fans would enjoy. It's a good thing that they because Sleeping Dogs is the 'Sleeper Hit' of the year so far. From the combat, populated world with plenty to do, and the story that focuses on loyalty, honor, and revenge, Sleeping Dogs has plenty to k...

The part you want to here is this, Sleeping Dogs is actually a really good game, seriously. Story and character driven and most importantly very limited in the tedious game ruining attributes often seen. Sleeping Dogs takes enough from other popular games and does those features equal or more justice than originally so, as well as shedding some of the elements that made previous open world crime games more tedious than need be.The over all gameplay in Sleeping Dogs is neither a high or low point...

    Great game 0

Sleeping DogsOverall: A great game that gets you sucked in, but the side missions get old fast.Visuals: They really outdid themselves with this one. Hong Kong looks amazing, and you really feel that you are there, kicking ass and taking in the sights. I dont have the high resolution texture pack, but I know if i did the game would look even better. The PC version looks a little better than the consoles, thanks to some extra work. Much appreciated. Year of the Dog 0

The first time we see Wei Shen is through the monitors of a Hong Kong PD drug sting as he tries to conduct a transaction. When the sale goes bad, we take control as he charges through a densely packed fish market chased by a squad of uniforms. Unable to elude arrest, he gets thrown into lock-up and reunites with his childhood friend Jackie, now a low-ranking member of the Sun On Yee, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the city. Jackie promises to make an introduction. When Wei’s ...

From a long development cycle to being outright cancelled and then being picked up by another publisher, the fate of True Crime: Hong Kong is certainly an interesting one. Renamed "Sleeping Dogs" and brought to shelves by Square, it's a success story of a game that took awhile for it to actually come out but unlike similar stories such as Duke Nukem or the recent Aliens game, Sleeping Dogs is actually a good game. It's such a remarkable game that it's funny the only real thing I can lobby again...

Authentic Hong Kong New Wave story & Bully's spiritual successor 0

The first time I remember hearing about this Sleeping Dogs was in an interview with Mike Skupa, it was still under the alias True Crime: Hong Kong. This was a dark period for the game because soon after it was dropped by it's original publisher Activision and picked up by Square Enix. While I was watching the interview Mike Skupa gave on the game, I reminisced how great his prior game was Bully from Rockstar and as soon as I picked up Sleeping Dogs I knew that this was his spiritual successor to...

The Hounds of Hong Kong 1

There are a number of subgenres out there which you cannot develop a game in without inevitably clashing with some industry behemoth. For the MMO genre that behemoth is World of Warcraft, for modern military shooters it’s Call of Duty, and for open-world crime games it’s Grand Theft Auto. Seriously competing against these classic titles means creating a game that either outperforms them at what they do best, or adds some new, high quality features of its own to the mix. Sleeping Dogs is an open-...

    Brutal Fun 0

“Sleeping Dogs” manages to be a game without a single trace of innovation or any sense of personality and still be an amazingly fun experience. The game has not a single shred of originality. The fighting is taken from Rocksteady´s Batman games. The shooting from Max Payne. The clothes and cars from Saints Row. The story from every cheesy B movie about undercover cops with a touch of Kung-Fu thrown in. What is surprising about all this is how masterfully the developer, United Front Games, manag...

Good dumb open world Kung Fu action 1

I’m probably not the first person to admit this, but I don’t think the Grand Theft Auto games are actually that fun to play. They are spectacle crime simulators, with arcady driving and mediocre gun combat. While their narratives feature top notch voice talent and good moment to moment writing, the stories themselves end up as cliche Mafia stories involving feuding gangs and eventual betrayals. Enter Sleeping Dogs, a game developed by the now defunct United Front Games, a GTA clone ...

It'd be a true crime to ignore Sleeping Dogs! Uh... Sorry. 0

Sleeping dogs puts you in the shoes of Wei Shen, a police officer tasked with infiltrating a Triad cell and bringing it down in the neon-washed streets of Hong Kong. In traditional urban open-world game fashion this involves a lot of driving and shooting! And also a fair bit of kung fu.Whilst melee fighting options tend to be secondary in this brand of game the hand-to-hand combat of Sleeping Dogs is at the forefront. And whilst there is plenty of shooting, the vast majority of your confrontation...

I gave this game 4.5 cause the only thing missing from this game is Online Mode. Other than that there is nothing wrong with this game. I always am going to compare GTA IV to this game cause they are very similar. However I thing this game passes GTA IV in many ways. The story here is a lot better than GTA IV. I'm a huge fan of Cantonese film. My favorites being Exiled and A Better Tomorrow, Sleeping dogs found it's way into my heart real fast. Its mix of hand to hand action, some average third person shooting, solid driving and races, and tons of things to collect is just what I needed to fill my open world fix. What set's Sleeping Dogs apart from the pack though is its style. Inspired by real life Hong Kong and the crime movies that take place there, Sleeping Dogs has a real sense of place. Walk the...

Early on in this game you realize it is not just a copycat of Grand Theft Auto. It has an intriguing story line, excellent gameplay, and an amazing open world environment. I really couldn't stop playing it after I started. Although the story was awesome, I spent a lot of time running around stealing cars, getting in high speed chases with cops, and busting drug deals. Shockingly Enjoyable 0

Rescued from developmental hell as a True Crime game by Square Enix, Sleeping Dogs is a surprising entry in the open world genre. Games with the troubled development story tend to not be solid (LA Noire was the exception to that rule) and this game did not seem to have a great deal of buzz heading in. So, how did it turn out?First off, it being a True Crime game made little sense. It was better than the prior True Crime games and the game world is far more realized with far more things to do. "True Crime: Streets of L.A." meets "Shenmue". 0

"Sleeping Dogs" began life as "True Crime: Hong Kong" before the property was purchased by Square Enix from Activision. But the game still feels exactly like another "True Crime" installment. It is a GTA-inspired open world action title with an emphasis on the martial arts. Story wise, this plays like "Infernal Affairs: The Video Game". You play as Wei Shen, an American undercover cop who gets in with the Triads to topple them. He was raised in the gritty streets of Hong Kong, so he is instantl...

This game nearly cracks it. But bugs and design frustrations tarnish a potentially awesome game. 0

Lets get the obvious out of the way first. This game will remind you of GTA and that's never a bad thing. From its long story, the driving around a large city and wealth of hidden items around the world, it's easy to compare the two.The problem is, a lot of what the game does right, is overshadowed by it's numerous bugs and design failings.Firstly the good. The graphics, while basic, do get the job done (especially on the PC) and the sound/music adds to an already rich new environment. Not many...

    Sleeping Dogs Review 0

The tale of Sleeping Dogs is a strange one. Back in 2008, when United Front Games formed, they began working on an open world game about a Hong Kong based, female assassin. Activision saw the chance to squeeze some money out of it and pulled out a publishing deal with UFG. In 2009, Activision debuted the game as True Crime: Hong Kong. After delaying it from 2010 to 2011, Activision cancelled the game. They cited the fact that they wanted to focus on titles with more earning potential. Apparently...

Sleeping Dogs had one of the most confusing and drawn out development periods in video game history. The game started out as Black Lotus, an open-world crime drama developed by Treyarch. However, the game was cancelled early in the development process before being picked up by United Front Games. Black Lotus became a part of the True Crime series before being cancelled again for being too much of a risk for Activision. Fortunately, the story on this game was far from finished. Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangster 0

Sleeping Dogs (Xbox 360)I abandoned the open-world crime genre with 2004’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I became weary of the game half-way through (having played the two previous entries in quick succession) and completely passed on GTA IV. In 2011, Volition released Saints Row: The Third and completely renewed my interest in this type of game. Sleeping Dogs, much like Saints Row, was a surprise hit and had me sucked into its world. In an age overburden by open world games Sleeping Dogs sets itself apart with a fresh setting, a great melee combat system and a likable cast of characters. It is also fun as hell. This is a Chinese gangster movie filled with absurd moments that can only come from a open world videogame. What sets it apart is the way the protagonist, from a gameplay perspective, feels grounded to the world. He has weight therefore his punches have strength. He interacts with his environment and so does the fool ...

I have just come from finishing the PC version of Sleeping Dogs, and one of the first questions that entered my head was “Why, Activision?” Now, I have no idea what state Sleeping Dogs was in before Activision gave United Front Games the kick out of the door and Square Enix picked up the publishing rights, but the final product is a fantastic open world game that improves many aspects of the Grand Theft Auto formula. The latest game in the open world crime genre sees Sleeping Dogs make its case for signalling a change of direction in a seemingly saturated market. Set in Hong Kong, the game follows in the footsteps of Saints Row: The Third by being a different alternative to juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto. I like Sleeping Dogs. But I can also understand why it was initally cancelled. Giant Bomb's review hits it on the head. It has some of the worst problems with open world games without really improving upon them. Where it does succeed is its enjoyable story, its great setting, and the brutal fist-fighting gameplay; a welcome change from the focus on shooting of most Open World games. Wei is also a genuinely likeable and flawed character and its always fun to have an Asian protagonist, somewhat un...

The development of Sleeping Dogs is actually a pretty unique one and is kind of interesting also. By all rights, this game should not exist at all.
