Easily the original Soul Calibur on the DreamCast for me, that game still holds up amazingly well, everything past Soul Calibur II was excess.

Yeah, I personally think the second is the best. It added some really cool characters like Talim and Raphael.

You know what, I probably put the most time into IV because of the character creation.  1 and 2 were both very good too.  1 especially had that more compelling weapon master mode, or whatever.  If SCIV had that, it would have been the best SC ever.

Soul Edge just had the awesome intro song.

Soulcalibur IV. The character customisation was done so right here, it looked great, online was solid, it looked gorgeous, I'd say the only downside was the lack of story, which really helped Soulcalibur II stand out as a great fighting game. I <3 Soulcalibur.

Another reason why the original Soul Calibur is my favorite is because that was before Namco felt they absolutely HAD to put ill fitting tie-in characters in every new installment, though Kratos works decently enough in Broken Destiny.

Absolutely! Could not believe my eyes when I first saw that for the first time. Needless to say, no other game in the series has had the same effect.

Also, it was the one I had the most fun with. Even liked the singleplayer-part! Unlocking stuff and whatnot.

Wow, you fail, at least that's better then holding down the R trigger and forward on the analog stick for 10 hours.

So you do admit that they are button mashers? I agree, they do require 'extreme amount of tact' but you'll still be mashing buttons while playing them.

I know that, but i was just generalizing. Like in same way shooters require you to press thumbstick forward, hold down the right trigger and occasionaly the left trigger, fighting games are button mashers. I was stating the obvious, hence my username.

People who call Soul Calibur or DOA button mashers have no idea how to play the game.  Just because you can make characters move and attack onscreen while mashing the buttons, that doesn't mean that you'll actually consistently beat someone who knows how to play the games (ie someone who can easily and effectively counter and reverse you).

I have the fondest memories of Soul Calibur 2, personally. I played that game for hours upon hours when it came out.

I also really liked Soul Calibur 4, because of online-play, and how damn gorgeous it looked. The character customization was cool, although not as good as the one from SC3. Never played SC1.

The Dreamcast's Soul Calibur has the best , most balanced, and deepest fighting system of its franchise and its genre.   Can't believe it's 10+ years old.
