Spider-Man 3: Decent but upsetting
Following the great Spider-man 2 game Spider-man 3 had me really excited until I actually started to play it. Although flying around NYC still is the strongest part of the game, the character animations in the cutscenes are laughable.
The gameplay while swinging feels fluid and easy, but when it comes to combat it seems to falter. The combat becomes very confusing and frustrating on certain characters. Camera-wise Spider-man 3 is atrocious, getting stuck in awkward places, just making things more frustrating. Other than the camera and combat, running and jumping is extremely intuitive and fun to do; adding web-swinging into the mix makes for a great ride throughout New York City. An "exciting" new addition is the context sensitive commands in boss battles in minigames; but they seem to become annoying.
The actual city is a lively place with nice detailed buildings, pedestrians, and cars scattered throughout New York City. To further immerse the player into NYC subways were added, but don't really add too much to the actual game and seem more like a gimmick. The character models out of cutscenes look fantastic but once a cutscene starts, you probably should start laughing...
The story arc of Spider-man 3 is confusing and disjointed. Although you'll fight famous Spidey baddies like the Lizard and King Pin among others, it doesn't connect or make any sense to the story... at all. Of course you'll follow the basic storyline of the movie but all in all the story is lackluster.
To keep the longevity of the game, they added the Black Spidey suit as a reward for the end of the game, but it doesn't add any new gameplay or moves so its merely an appearance change. Additionally, they have tokens for each gang throughout the city to collect for which is more of a chore than fun. Lastly, they have races and trick races to perform that are scattered throughout the city and you can earn the standard bronze, silver, and gold trophy on each challenge. Unfortunately, after the main storyline was finished I had no reason to keep on playing this game (except for a maybe a little bit of swinging around) so the replayability is extremely low.
So this game was a pretty upsetting disappointment to the Spider-man franchise but managed to keep the free roaming goodness of NYC intact. But I have to ask: How can you make a good movie video game when the movie is already terrible?
