Repetitive, but excellent combat makes up for it.
In this game, you play as Spider-man trying to stop Venom from turning the entire city into monsters with the alien symbiote. This is an original story, not based off any of the movies, so you don't have to endure Toby Maguire's abysmal voice acting throughout the game. He's been replaced with someone who comes off sounding roughly about 18 - 22. Many other reviewers have stated that Spidey's voice actor is annoying and whiney which in some parts it was but overall i thought it was pretty well done.
The combat has been infused with web slinging making spidey a force to be reckoned with. You can do ground attacks, air attacks, and wall attacks. A new feature is the Web Strike attack which will allow spidey to grab an enemy with his web and do a number of attacks to him. Pressing one button will do a series of massive area attacks with the enemy and another will allow you slam him into the ground by jumping off him and chaining the move to another enemy.
The only thing that has really irked me so far has been the repetitive missions and somewhat crazy camera. The missions are usually just a variant of "go here and kill X number of N" types with a few "rescue X number of N". This never really becomes a problem as the optional missions can be completed while completing the main story missions.
The camera is not too bad. The only time it seems to flip out is when Spidey attaches to a wall. If you swing into a building and push the wall run button to attach, the camera will get kind of crazy and spin all around making spidey run usually not where you want him to go. It can quickly be corrected by clicking the right stick.
When the missions become boring, they have Spider Tokens you can collect that are sitting around the city ala Crackdown's Agility Orbs. Just like Crackdown, getting the Spider Tokens is just as addicting as agility orbs. The tokens do a similiar thing as agility orbs making Spidey faster but also increases his health.
Loved
- Original Story
- Multiple Marvel character cameos, references, and main story appearances
- Fluid combat that really feels like Spider-man
- Ability to switch between black and red suit at will making for some interesting combos
- Addicting Spider Token collecting ala Crackdown's Agility Orbs
Hated
- Repetitive Missions
- Overdone voice acting (sometimes)
- Crazy camera when attaching to walls on buildings
- Wonky targeting system sometimes makes it hard to target the exact enemy (or civilian) you want
- That I have to go to sleep to quit collecting Spider Tokens
