This came up recently when one of my friends was checking out Giant Bomb so I thought that it would be appropriate if I brought it up with the GiantBomb community. My friend was checking out GiantBomb for the first time and what's the first thing he checks? Yup SpongeBob's character page. Why? I guess it's okay for people over the age of 20 to still like SpongeBob. Then when examining Bob's character page he noticed that Squidward was attached to Bob's friends tab and not his enemy tab. Pointing out the fact that Squidward is more antagonistic than friendly he believes that Squidward is Bob's enemy and enemy only. So GiantBomb are any of you familiar with SpongeBob to provide assistance?
Why is this not a poll? Polls can be abused and by requiring you to write out something I'm hoping you guys put in some effort into explaining your reasoning... hoping.

In SpongeBob SquarePants Is Squidward SpongeBob's Friend or Enemy

he helps, he hinders; If it was a squidward focused episode, it usually starts with him trying to do something to spongebob (make him stop being so loud, stop him from blowing bubbles) and it backfires on him. He'll help him in times of great duress, but it's probably better that squidward be classified as both, really. (if that's possible) if not, enemy.
I have no shame
He is his foil. Always the polar opposite of him, sparking conflict. However, depending on the circumstances of the plot, their goals and motives may make them friends or enemies.
" He's both. To SpongeBob, Squidard is a friend but for Squidard, SpongeBob is his enemy. "This. I think Squidward should be listed as a friend on Bob's page, and Spongebob should be listed as an enemy on Squidward's page (assuming you can do that (and I'm willing to bet you can)).
But there have been plenty of good times between Squidward and Spongebob...Like that time Squidward thought Spongebob was going to die because of that pie bomb. He was nice to Spongebob all day long.
Also, I still enjoy Spongebob. At least the old (ie, good) episodes. It went downhill a lot in the last few years.
" @mracoon said:I haven't seen any of the new new episodes (don't have cable) but some of the mid episodes were pretty good. I thought the movie was actually pretty hilarious" He's both. I don't really think it's so cut and dry. It's clear that Squidward thinks on most occasions that SpongeBob is his enemy and it's very clear that SpongeBob believes Squidward to be his friend.
However, on some occasions, Squidward shows genuine concern for SpongeBob, easily represented best in the time machine episode. So, I'd really place Squidward almost as a neutral guy.
EDIT: And SpongeBob is awesome. It's probably the only modern cartoon that could even come close to holding a candle near the likes of Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry.
Also, I went to the Squidward page and added Spongebob to his enemy list. He was already in Squidward's enemy list, but I noticed that Patrick was in both Squidward's lists of enemies and friends, so I figured Spongebob should be too.
" He's both. To SpongeBob, Squidard is a friend but for Squidard, SpongeBob is his enemy. "Pretty much this. SpongeBob will do anything to get Squidward to like him. ANYTHING. He'll burn down his house, get him arrested, and DESTROY HIS LIFE until Squidward likes him back. Fuck SpongeBob.
" It's pretty clear that they're friends. Even plankton, to a certain degree, is Spongebob's friend. "Spongebob needs enemies, dood. I would definitely say Plankton is the enemy; as seen on the episode where plankton gets spongebob to kick people off the beach, where he controls spongebob to get the krabby patty...
why do I remember all these
" @ThatFrood said:Spongebob really... doesnt have enemies though. He just has friends. No one really considers spongebob an "enemy", how could you? He isn't threatening, imposing, he's just a sponge. People might try to manipulate him, they might find him annoying, but in the end, no one thinks of him as an "enemy". He's a friend to all.
" @Laketown said:I dunno, Plankton's whole thing is getting the krabby patty formula, and spongebob, more often than not, gets in the way of that. If that's not an enemy I don't know what is. And SpongeBob is awesome. It's probably the only modern cartoon that could even come close to holding a candle near the likes of Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry. "Rocco's Modern Life my friend. Rocco's Modern Life.

I didn't count it for two reasons:
1. It's been 15 years since it ended
2. Holy crap, it's already been 15 years since it ended. I feel old now.
SpongeBob is probably the only cartoon that is still running that can do that, perhaps I should have said.

Deep down, Squidward is Spongebob's friend. Squidward is kind of a jerk and is easily annoyed by Spongebob, but at the end of the day, he does really care about him. Look at the April Fool's episode where Squidward plays a really elaborate prank on Spongebob and makes him cry, and then Squidward feels so bad about it. It's because he cares. It's like Spongebob is the annoying younger brother that Squidward can't help to torment and make fun of, but when things get serious, Squidward has his back. Not an enemy.
" @Aus_azn said:Phineas and Ferb aren't that good to be honest. " ...why is the F is for friends who do stuff together now stuck in my head? <_> ""U is for U and me!"
" @W0lfbl1tzers said:If that's your stance, then you haven't seen much Phineas and Ferb. As a guy who watches a lot of cartoons, Phineas and Ferb is easily one of the greatest cartoons in the past 20 years. Never mind the solid plotting and pacing, dual story lines, appreciation of an internal canon, and the ability to masterfully string together two jokes from seasons apart; its greatest success is its ability to be funny to any age group, my girlfriend's father, who is the grumpiest man I know, will watch it with or without his toddler son." @Aus_azn said:Phineas and Ferb aren't that good to be honest. Also, Flapjack ended mid last year.
See i think that Squidward is just a lonely dude... he desperately needs a friend but can't get over himself long enough to accept that Spongebob, in all reality, would be the best friend ever. Therefor... I think Squidward is his own enemy and poor Spongybob is clueless.
