    2.2ghz Core2Duo

I can run Shadow of Chernobyl with Complete 2009 in DX8 with everything max'd except AA and according to FRAPs I get some 200+fps. In DX9, though, I get 30fps on medium and even then it hiccups a bit.

Pripyat supports DX9, don't know about DX8. it's made for DX11, so take that as you will.

It does support DX8 and yes you can run it.  (your stats are better than mine were when I played the first STALKER in DX8, and CoP runs better than that -- at least in dx9)

It costs 30 on Steam if you dont already own another STALKER game on Steam. But if you do it costs only 20, meaning you can get Clear Sky also for the price of just CoP if you buy it first since it's only $10.

Damn, my old ass 256mb7900 GTO runs better than that with DX9 with a hyper-threading single core 3.2ghz P4. What the hell does DX8 even look like nowadays?

I used them for borderlands and it said I was going to run it great. I get the game and I couldn't run it at all.

That might have just been the game, Borderlands was supposedly quite janky on PC.

Please forgive my ignorance as I'm pretty "new" to PC games, but how would I go about changing which version of directx the game uses?

    It's represended by lighting model.

    Static Lighting = DX8 = Renderer r1
    Full Dynamic = DX9 = r2
    Enhanced Full Dynamic = DX9c = r2.5
    Enhanced Full Dynamic (DX10) = DX10 = r3 (use a console command or user.ltx tweak toggle DX10.1)
    ??????????? = DX11 = r4

The DX11 option won't even show up on my DX10 machine so I don't know what will show up on older cards.

My PC was pretty boss when I got it in 2007 (can play Crysis on high in DX9 with 40~fps, CoD4 on max, Fallout 3 on max), it's just Shadow of Chernobyl is poorly optimized. I'll give CoP a shot if it'll run well in DX9. I don't care for graphical quality, I just want great shaders. Shadow of Chernobyl, at night time, was never really dark. I could see perfectly without a flashlight; DX9 enables complete darkness which is what I want.

According to System Requirements Labs I can't even run STALKER on the minimum, yet I can run it on max in DX8 with 200+fps. It says I can run Call of Pripyat on recommended settings provided my CPU was faster.

sometimes it says you can't run it because of the operating system.

I dualboot XP and Vista and the results for Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat stay the same.
