Most of you have probably heard of Athene, a previous WoW fanatic who has now gone on to play Starcraft II. According to him, he's easily beating top ranked players and whatnot. I don't play SC2 at all, but I know a lot of you do, so I was hoping you'd provide some insight into whether or not this is legit. I've always wondered whether his antics are real or not.

I did see a link of him like #4 in Master's league, but I don't know if it was a legit link or whatever.

Even from my limited knowledge of the game I..think hes just being a troll.

Obvious troll.  There are way easier ways to beat insane, like bunker rushing them or cannon rushing.

I don't feel like downloading and watching the replay, but from what he showed there a human would crush him. If he one base turtles, then you can just expand like mad and overwhelm him. Siege tanks are good and all, but a well placed marine drop would wreck them, especially if you are up several bases on him and can just send a crazy amount of them. 
 
Maybe this is just his strategy for playing the AI and he has other stuff for players. Either way, I wouldn't take this video too seriously unless he also has some replays of him beating real top level players.

a popular opinion across some other forums is that this is really KiWiKaKi (friend of his and member of Root Gaming) smurfing on athene's account.  any which way, athene is a fairly epic troll, who also happens to be pretty entertaining, fwiw.

 I looked through the replay for a little while (it's over an HOUR long.. what the hell I'm not wasting my time on that) and no, he's not the greatest SC2 player at all. If either AI had built a single air to ground attack unit, he would have lost instantly. He had nothing but tanks. The insane AI suffers from the same problems as even the very easy AI: it just attacks into death traps. Also, I believe he has released replays of himself beating known high level players and plays in the top league, but then in this video he admits he doesn't know what an Orbital Command is? That does not compute. Athene is a troll, and I don't think even he (the real he, not the he that he is in videos) thinks anyone in the SC world is going to buy his shit. It's just entertainment for himself and his followers. He made several basic errors in the replay, even as far as to only have two SCVs mining gas from his main refineries even though in the video he talked about how important gas is.
 
In the end, beating even 7 insane AIs 1v7, which has been done, still doesn't say anything about ones ability to compete against high level human opponents. Even during that first attack the AI could have scanned the cliff where his tanks were and destroyed them from the low ground. Instead, it did the usual predictable AI thing and walked up his ramp into death trap. He beat the AIs the same way everyone else does. He exploited their stupidity.
 
That said, I kind of like Athene. He portrays the extreme of all the competitive gamer stereotypes that I encounter in games, and I see his videos as a mocking those people. Those annoying, obnoxious people.

Replay desync
Half of his commentary did not much up with what actually happened in the video ("I didn't even know what orbital commands are"  He has two early on)
He could have been beaten with a Banshee early on.
 
I hope this was actually him because his playing was atrocious.

I don't know about insane terran but using that strategy against any competent StarCraft player wouldn't present a problem at all. I'm horrible and I could easily get past that wall in.

Like others said, most believe it's Kiwikaki playing.  In the games I watched of his, he always got motherships and that's kinda kiwi's thing.
