Steam
Concept »
A digital distribution service owned by Valve Corporation. Originally created to distribute Valve's own games, Steam has since become the de facto standard for digital distribution of PC games.
Catalyst drivers now available from Steam
Apparently ATI, *ahem*, I mean AMD is now partnering with Valve to deliver their drivers through Steam. Would anyone that has an AMD card like to share their experiences with this so far?
Went into the "Steam" drop down menu found where it said "Check AMD driver" or something like that, found the 10.9 driver and started downloading
Hit the install now
And your regular windows installer pops up.
" I said years ago that steam should do driver updates like it does game updates. Hopefully before long, more companies will get on board, and we'll see a range of drivers automatically updated through steam. "fuck it, everything should just update through steam. Steam should just be own OS.
heh, if they ever launch the rumored linux version I'm they could do that. They would obviously compete with the package managers out there already, but it would be rather awesome to have Steam both as the place to purchase and download your games, and update the kernel or something. I guess it could actually be useful for the small market of commercial products for Linux, since most of that stuff is hard to find in stores, even in web stores.
Oh, I'm installing the drivers now, but I noticed that everything is automated, which you should obviously expect from something available through Steam, but I also remember that when you download the Catalyst installer from AMD's web site, it will try to install a lot of useless junk along with the catalyst control center and the driver. Like a lot of trial versions of MMORPG's you'd never want to play and such. Now I wonder if it's defaulted to install all that crap, since I was never given the option to not install it.
Edit: Never mind, it actually seems they were kind enough to only install the stuff they said they were going to do. I can't see anything has changed except the CCC and driver version.
I hope they make the process even more streamlined. Steam updates games silently in the background. Video driver updates should be silent as well, though since there are always things that could go wrong, you should be warned that it's happening and warned about any errors that occur in the process.
It installed new drivers like it said it would. This is good news. Saves me the trouble of going to AMD's site.
Can you tell me how to update my drivers? @pornstorestiffi said:
" Thats pretty damn cool. I should go check if its on now. "Where can I find this stuff? I wanna try it.

So how do i update VIA steam. I down loaded a new driver. Screen flipped out. So I assume it went well.
" @Geno: I just updated the drivers for my 5850 (thanks for the recommendation on that by the way, great card!) and it went pretty smoothly. The driver package was downloaded and extracted automatically, and the installation process started automatically as well. The only "bug" was that once the new drivers were installed, I got dumped to a 1280x1024 desktop and had to manually restart. However, once I restarted, everything was fine. "Is there a thing that pops up in steam? Or is it all ATI website?
Restarting steam after an update. Lets see whats happenin. Where would I find this "update drivers" option?" @The_Laughing_Man: It popped up for me automatically when I closed Steam an hour or so ago. I didn't even know about the feature, I found this thread afterward. "
All I see is a "Video driver update" and that takes me to the AMD website
I would totally jump on board for a Steam OS." @adoggz said:

" @The_Laughing_Man: A window popped up automatically for me with an AMD logo, informing me that Steam now does ATI driver updates. I have no idea where to find it manually. "I have a laptop. I am guessing laptops are not supported yet.
