    Halp! Preloading Portal 2 killed Steam

    OK, so I brought Portal 2 last night, clicked Preload and left it going.

    I wake up this morning to the preload suspended at 97%, and I can't resume it.

    So I figure, hey, might as well restart Steam, that'll probably fix it. So I do, but when I try to load Steam after exiting it, I get this error message:

     
     steam.exe (main exception): CAnnot open blob archive file cmultifieldblob(mem-mapped file):  Failed to open file.

    A restart resolves nothing, so I removed Portal 2 from my common folder, then tried loading steam again.

    Now it just brings up the Steam update box, updates from 30% to 100%, then closes.

    How to fix!?! Has anyone else ever had this issue with steam? The help on their website (including the cure-all of getting rid of your clientregistry.blob file) didn't work.

    Alright, I've found a solution:

    Delete everything in your Steam folder, except for Steam.exe and your SteamApps folder (unless you want to re download all your stuff).
    So I suspect it wasn't specifically Portal 2, but Steam's reaction to Portal 2, so basically a fresh install of Steam should sort it out!
    I guess someone should lock this now, but

    LET THIS BE A REMINDER TO ALL YOU YOUNG KIDS OUT THERE: CRIME DOESN'T PAY, BUT PROSTITUTION DOES.

    I've had Steam irreversibly halt on downloads before. I wish I knew what caused it.
