Hey guys. I just started playing SF4 ( I know I'm late to the party, but I'm hoping to get into it more by the time SSF4 comes out) I was just wondering which character you would suggest I play. I feel weird about Ken and Ryu because a lot of people consider them cheap or over used. Let me know what you think.
Street Fighter IV
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Jul 18, 2008
After nearly a decade in hiatus, Capcom's signature mainline fighting game series resurfaces with its fourth main installment, combining the traditional 2D gameplay with modern fully-3D graphics.
New Challenger!
which console do you play it on ? becuase there are separate groups of users who play on the different consoles
" Use Dan, he's the best character in the game. "I'm new to the competitive game; I wasn't born yesterday.
" I'd say pick Sagat :3 "A friend of mine said he was geting a bit of a revamp in SSFIV. Should I wait, or practice anyway?
. Hes top tier for a reason . its not like hes going to be drastically changed so practice now" @turbomonkey138 said:

- go online and watch some videos to see what characters you think you might like
- head into the challenges and try some of the normal trials for the characters you're considering. The 5 normal trials are a pretty good indication of what the character has to offer and it will teach you the character's basics (bread & butter combos, special moves, super/ultra)

Ryu is sort of overused, but don't let that dictate who you play as. Pick whoever feels right for you. Ryu is definitely one of the better picks for someone trying to get a feel for the game and its deeper mechanics, but that doesn't mean you have to stick with him forever. Just play as him for awhile until you get comfortable, then take the other chars through training mode/trial mode and figure out if any of the other characters fits your playstyle/preference more than Ryu.
" @turbomonkey138: The only lols are from me after I 10-1 the lot of you! "There we go.
Go through Arcade Mode with a good amount of characters and just pick the person that seems right for you.
Except for Dan, he's just too cheap.
" @The_Decemberist: All the Shotos (Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Sagat) are typically a starting point but on the other hand, there are a lot of them out there. The best way to get an idea for what works best for you would be either:You cant just pick ken you have to unlock him and its toughjust don't pick ken thats just wrong "

I thought Dhalsim was more obvious. And since he's on PS3 he could have mirror matches with me. Those are fun, especially with Dhalsim." Ken. Isn't it obvious? "
@The_Decemberist:
I wouldn't really know where a good starting point is, but I've yet to play an awesome El Fuerte. No matter who you choose though, you should hit me up for some games. I'm sort of awful, but if you can see past that, my PSN is WeUnsweatThem. :)
" @Stang said:Yeah, I'll definitely add you. And thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to head out and practice some. I hope to see you all online sometime." Ken. Isn't it obvious? " @Stang said:Stick or pad?" @DanielJW: Dhalsim actually takes skill to use. Props to you and Mr. Devil for having the patience to use that anorexic bastard. "Psst, I still can't cancel out of that medium kick. I just can't do it! "
Not tough once you get the rhythm down..once you do it's like second nature. Try crouching fierce instead...that hit leaves you an eternity to get the flame out.
/off-topic advice
" Dude, try and learn a weird character like Dhalsim or Gen. It demands respect. I got my ass kicked by a Dhalsim recently and I was like "Wow bravo to you sir for being an expert Dhalsim". Whereas usually I'm all like EFFING AKUMA BASTARD GRUMBLE GRUMBLE. "tru dat
i just got started too, and i've been experimenting with a lot of characters to see who i want to main, and so far, Ryu and Ken have been pretty easy to pick up, but I am siding towards C. Viper, because she is pretty easy to get used to quick and her moves don't have a ton of range, but they work well
Just play around with a few of the characters in Arcade and choose based on whoever's style you like most. Saying that, I've been playing the game for a year, and I've only just settled on 3 that way.

If you have a soul, you will not do this.
Remember, there are reasons characters are overused. Ken, Ryu, and Akuma all are pretty balanced characters and a great hopping-off point. However, if you want to go a different route, I completely understand. I love to main Bison. He's got some great basics moves and he's different enough that you can vary up his attacks and really keep someone on their toes. Keep in mind, though, that I am the self-advocated worst player of SF4 on the Giant Bomb boards... so yeah. Heh.
This is the point where I'd normally say, "Them's fightin' words," but given the context, I guess I should say, "Them's bitch-slappin' words!"
I love Street Fighter IV in all its crazy glory, but I've never taken the time to sit down and learn the newer fundamentals like super moves. I'm still stuck in the Street Fighter 2 mindset, I guess.
" @V said:I mean, if you look at it by a technical standpoint, almost all of her moves are pretty easy to hit, and the high jump that she has can be useful in combinations with the flame kick... I mean, this is going to sound crazy, but I have a diasbility, so I am playing with one hand, and so the moves that she has are easy for me to hit." i just got started too, and i've been experimenting with a lot of characters to see who i want to main, and so far, Ryu and Ken have been pretty easy to pick up, but I am siding towards C. " You wanna win pick sagatYou wanna lose pick dan You wanna make poeple look stupid getting beat down by a teenage girl pick sakura Theres little more satisfying in this game for me than seeing a sagat get his ass beat by a little girl. Very justifying. "This is fair and correct. Sakura is pretty damn good for the standard Ryu, Ken type character. And the only thing better than beating someone with Sakura is beating someone with Dan.
" @Stang said:Oh wow man have you heard of OneHandedTerror? He's a one handed SF player too. I'm sure you can google him if you're interested. If you're on 360 I'd like to play your viper." @V said:I mean, if you look at it by a technical standpoint, almost all of her moves are pretty easy to hit, and the high jump that she has can be useful in combinations with the flame kick...
