Overview
Announced in a Nintendo Direct on September 1 2016, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS brings the level design tool to a portable platform. The editor is fully featured and includes the interactive tutorials from Mary O. and Yamamura. Nintendo Software Technology handled the porting to Nintendo 3DS, their first project not part of the Mario vs Donkey Kong series in years.
However, there are features from the original version of Super Mario Maker not present in this version such as the Mystery Mushroom and associated Mario costumes. Another omission is the ability to share courses online. Creators can now only share their work through local wireless and StreetPass. At the same time, it is not possible to download specific courses from the internet via the Course ID. Select courses designed in the Wii U version can be played in the Nintendo 3DS version via the 100 Mario Challenge and the Recommended Courses list.
A feature exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version is the ability for creators to collaborate on courses. A creator can share their unfinished course through local wireless with a friend who has their own copy of the game and contributes to the course. Levels designed in collaboration are marked with a special icon to highlight this fact.
Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS comes with 100 courses designed by Nintendo which feature special Medal Challenges such as defeating all enemies or collecting all coins. Completing these will be rewarded with medals.
