An action-packed, deliberately-retro parody of video games and pop culture from the era of 8-bit game consoles, Retro City Rampage is a nostalgic twist on the mass-mayhem open-world action of Grand Theft Auto.
An open-world action-adventure game following an eccentric FBI agent as he investigates a series of bizarre murders in the small rural town of Greenvale.
Yakuza, known in Japan as Ryu ga Gotoku (Like a Dragon), is an open-world action-adventure game with RPG elements, developed and published by Sega, in which you play the role of a Yakuza gangster known as Kazuma Kiryu. It was released in 2005.
The third release in the Grand Theft Auto Franchise stars silent criminal protagonist Claude who, after having been betrayed and left for dead, is out for revenge. It was the first GTA game in 3D, an evolution that proved to be pivotal and helped establish the franchise as one of gaming's most popular (and controversial).
An action-adventure game set in 1980s Japan that follows one young man's journey to avenge his father's murder. It was praised for its ambitious scope and pioneered several gameplay features such as realistic open-world environments and Quick Time Events.
Grand Theft Auto is a free roaming crime saga with multiple settings and a top-down view.
Rent A Hero is a role playing and 2D fighter hybrid. It later saw a remake Rent-A-Hero No. 1 for Dreamcast and Xbox.
A licensed platformer featuring the troubled Japanese presenter and performer Masashi Tashiro.
Scrolling brawler with RPG attributes. Fight through street gangs as Alex and Ryan in search of Ryan's kidnapped girlfriend. This game was basically an early proto-GTA sandbox brawler, where the player can explore the city, beat up or steal from random people, and shop around.
The eighth Family Trainer game produced by Bandai for the NES, Totsugeki! Fuun Takeshijou is based on the obstacle course TV show Takeshi's Castle.
Alex Kidd puts his life on the line in pursuit of video games in this combination adventure-platformer for the Sega Master System.
An action platformer game by Sony label Sony Epic Records that was only released in Japan on June 27th, 1987. It is named for and features the real-life Japanese celebrity Tokoro Jouji.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is the second entry in the ground-breaking Zelda franchise. This controversial follow-up ditches the original's top-down perspective for 2D side-scrolling exploration and combat. The 2D towns, dungeons and combat arenas are tied together by a top-down overworld.
Woody Poco is a side-scrolling adventure platformer by dB-soft, originally for home computers and later adapted for the Famicom. It was never released outside of Japan.
A young boy explores a huge overworld filled with enemies and dungeons to find and rescue Princess Zelda from the evil Ganon.
Badlands is a laser disc western published by Konami. The gameplay uses single-button quick-draw mechanics. The plot is dark in tone, following a cowboy seeking revenge for his family's murder. It's possible to kill innocent civilians, but the player is punished for it.
An adventure game created by Yuji Horii and published by Enix in 1983 where the player controls a detective solving a murder mystery. The title helped establish the template for the Japanese adventure genre, which many other titles would imitate and build upon.
