    The Bouncer

Game » consists of 3 releases. Released Dec 23, 2000

Squaresoft's first PS2 release, The Bouncer is a beat'em up that features RPG mechanics and a branching story path. It tells the tale of three bouncers that fight to rescue a girl from the clutches of a megalomaniacal CEO. The game was known for its production values, introducing a juggling physics engine and graphical techniques such as bloom lighting and depth-of-field effects.

Intro movie starts off with a full rendered CG movie where ninjas dive bomb out of planes, running over rooftops. A young girl is making her way through a lovely city to arrive at a bar. The bouncer seems scary being tall with horns and piercings, but they give each other warm smiles. Inside the bar its pretty empty and the other bouncers are relaxing. The young girl makes her way to the hooded bouncer leaning on his chair and we find out that the girl is Dominique and she's giving a present to Sion. The vest wearing Kou and the tall Volt are about to celebrate Sion's anniversary as a bouncer with Dominique when Ninjas burst into the bar.
The fighting gets pretty amazing because the characters are actually the same as the cutscenes, no misrepresentation by lowering the graphics. The player can choose before the fight to be either one of the three characters: Sion, Kou, or Volt. Sion is more of a street fighter, mixing in kicks and punches. Kou is more like the character Hwoarang of the Tekken series using amazing kick combinations. And Volt is a brute, lashing out with hammering fist and body slams. All three characters are on screen and so are multiple enemies.
The Bouncer uses distinct gaming traits like an upgrade system where each character gains more stamina or better fighting moves. There are multiple scenarios as well if you choose to pick one character solely or on each level. One amazing (but ultimately useless) move where one character will make a gesture and if you press the R2 button they will go into a "Trinity Rush." It's a move that uses all three character to elaborately beat up on one enemy. Unfortunately it doesn't do much damage.
While the action is the main forte of the game, a crippingly game mechanic makes it so that if anybody gets tossed to the ground, it affects all the other players. Not only does it hurt all the characters, it can keep the characters flopping like fish and dying without the chance of getting up. If the player is in a corner with the three main characters and one gets hit, it can be a unfortunate death by characters being to close and flopping to death.
Other than that It was a cinematic game with soft lighting and bright colors. Going from a warm and comfortable bar to fighting on a hovercraft. There are memorable characters like Echidna with her Capoeira fighting style and party girl attire. There's also the inclusion of 2-player fighting games using the characters in the game with unique fighting styles. If it weren't for the crushing ragdoll effect and confined fighting areas, it would have been a great fighter.

if you are looking for another squaresoft masterpiece then this game is not right for you. its too short and only has the play time boosted up by constant interruptions of dialogue, although the cut scenes and cinimatics are definitely enjoyable they are put on screen almost every 5 minutes. the games story line will probably take around 1hour to finish and about half that if you skip through the scenes.the general gameplay is repetitive, but you can string some nice combos and becomes quite enj...
