Arguably the greatest original DS game
The Nintendo DS has a great line up of really well done RPGs. Some are original, some are remakes while others are ports. However The World Ends With You (TWEWY) is quite possibly the greatest original RPG on the Nintendo DS, I would go as far it can only be rivalled with Radiant Historia. With that being said; if you haven't played Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger on SNES or PS1, I advice picking them up before TWEWY.
- GAMEPLAY -
The gameplay in TWEWY is unique and very well done and polished. For each week that passes throughout the course of the game you get a new character and lose your previous week's supporting character. On the map you only control Neku, while in battle your main focus is controlling Neku but with limited control of the supporting character you character you are. 100% of the game controls are touch screen. It gives the JRPG an exciting new battle system feeling that hasn't been done before, nor since TWEWY. The only turn off is that some of the battles might be a bit too brutal for novice to average gamers. The way your characters grow in terms of stats is unique and makes over grinding to fly right throught he game near impossible.
- STORY & CHARACTERS -
I do not want to give any of the story out, it's the best part of the game and it's best for you to experience it for yourself. All I got to say is that it's amazing, unique, clever and very well written.
The characters are fantastic. All of the playable characters and other NPCs on your side feel really unique and different, apart from one which gets annoying fast *cough* Beat *cough*. While it's only the minority, a small few main enemies feel quite generic. But this only applies to a small few. For the most part the entire cast of characters is fantastic.
"Mother and Father call me Joshua. I guess you can call me Joshua, too... Since you're my dear, dear partner." - Joshua
- MUSIC-
The music in TWEWY is not only just overall really good music in general, but with a unique aspect to it. The main character, Neku, is wearing his signature purple/blue headphones, he loves music. Throughout TWEWY they're barely goes a moment without sound. As soon as one track stop another is starting already. It's a very unique way of putting you in the shoes of Neku.
Overall this game is a must buy for any fan of JRPGs or/and has a Nintendo DS. Be sure to wear some good quality headphones while playing to get the most out of the OST. My only gripe with this game is that Square didn't advertise this very well. It's one of the few good games they've made in recent years and they treated as if it never exists.
