I'm kinda curious if the nickname the developer got, Idea Fuck, is warranted. I've heard they're fucking awful even for people into this kind of niche JRPG/SRPG stuff.

Also, this is the game with the infamous Limited edition, right? The pink one that contained a body pillow cover and a breast mousepad?

Oh yeah, it was listed on Hardcore 101 among other "kusoge" (literally shit game): Weekly Kusoge

[...] everything in Agarest revolves around the same bureaucratic madness to achieve, to the point where you're seldom actually fighting any battles (some of which are borderline impossible unless you've gone to silly lengths to alchemize the right equipment). What's even more perverse about this is that after a time, much like a chimp performing in a zoo cage, you almost come to regard this set-up as normal. Why simply buy ITEM A when you can enjoy an hour running around turning some items into other items to trade for items that allow you to make the items that will eventually buy you your needed item? No wonder they're called Idea Fuck.

Oh, man, that game sounds kinda amazing.

Friends don't let friends play Agarest games. Record of Agarest War was the worst game I've ever played - and that's not hyperbole. It was fucking garbage.

I endorse this message.

Both of the Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky games are coming to Steam. Those would be a waaaay better choice.

So on the awful scale is this game a smoking hot mess, or OK but great? I have never played it before, but I do like FF Tactics and Fire Emblem.

Yup. I played Record of the Agarest War Zero and it was hot garbage. Agreed that it was the worst game I've ever played.

Which is kind of sad because I liked some of the characters in Zero. I just can't stomach the gameplay. It's the worst.

Congratulations: You've persuaded me to purchase this title. Nope. Not even going to make that joke, because if I did I would inevitably end up playing it as part of my current blogging experiment, and that might be the actual limit of my sanity.

I bought the PS3 version ages ago, all 14 GB of it! It actually started off fun, and there's a bunch of equipment to download for free from the PSN that makes the early game a breeze.

The problem is that the game is so obtuse about telling you what to do and the tutorial can be completed without meeting the objectives it wants you to complete, that you reach a point where you have no clue what you're doing. In my party of six, I had two guys that I had obviously accidentally spec'd amazingly well because they could crush anything, but the other four were woefully underpowered and no amount of levelling or equipment changes seemed to make any difference.

Add in questionable relationship mechanics (the hero can basically have any of the many women available) and a really fucking insane item-drop ratio and you have a recipe for disaster. My wife watched me playing most of SR3 and 4 without raising an eyebrow, but the one time she saw me playing this, I think she thought I'd wandered into some softcore-hentai SRPG.

I cannot recommend this game, but I guess it would appeal to nervous, cheeto-stained basement-dwellers.

I just realised it's War Zero I have, but the sentiment still counts.

I totally agree. The gameplay is just trash. I bought Zero and couldn't even get through the first generation. A waste of money and hard drive space.

I'll admit that I voted this up on greenlight just to encourage other publishers like Xseed to put more JRPGs on steam. Even it if it terrible I will still probably buy it if it goes for like $5 on a steam sale. I'm a sucker for JRPGs.

Then wait for Trails in the Sky First and Second Chapters because they are coming to Steam.

@zironz: Take that five dollars and use it towards something - ANYTHING - else. Like, say, starting a fire. Or as toilet paper. Shred it and use it in a salad. Wipe your countertop with it. Use it as a wrap for your tamales. Dropkick it. Stuff it into the garbage disposal. Use it as confetti at your next office party. Tear it in half, wad it up, and use it as earplugs.

There is no possibly way you could use that money in so terrible a way as buying any Agarest game. They're that horrible. If you asked me if I'd rather play Agarest or have my kneecap broken, I'd seriously have to consider walking with a limp the rest of my life. Do not under any circumstances ever buy this game. If they offered you money to play it, refuse adamantly or risk hating yourself a little bit for the rest of your life.

You have been warned.

I support this. I originaly bought a PS3 partially on the strength of Sony's previous two consoles having a rich library of JRPGs. The PS3 kind of let me down in that regard, since handheld systems became the go to platform for JRPGs. Now I primarily game on the PC so I hope this trend continues.

When we keep asking for more JRPGs on PC... this is not the quality of JRPG we have been talking about.

I also supported this game, in the hopes that more JRPGs would follow suit. I didn't think Agarest was bad, just very boring. I had no idea about Carpe Fulgar translating the TitS games, though. They do tremendous work and I'm very excited about that coming to Steam in the future.

I find it deeply ironic that people constantly give Patrick (and to a much lesser extent Alex) crap when he makes some sarcastic remark in the byline for a trailer, and then hilariously Patrick doesn't do that for this trailer, the one time when the entire comments section basically would've been with him.

I bought it for the PS3, and I have to opisite opinion as you, not that yours is wrong, but it was just one battle after another. Very little story. And the story they did have was not enough to keep me going.
