Why does Patrick keep talking about "the interesting benefits" of being forced to be online? There are none. All of those benefits are for multiplayer, while any negatives affect me even in single player. That's the whole problem. If I'm playing alone, by myself, splitting loot in multiplayer is not an interesting benefit to outweigh the lag I'm experiencing. Because, you know, I'm not playing multiplayer.

Just out of curiosity do you even notice your complete lack of bipartisanship? Or is the kind of thing that goes in your head "online only is stupid, and i'm right!"

You forgot to make some kind of counter argument against his argument. Instead it appears you accidentally started making personal attacks. Stop being silly.

your kidding? I will pretend your not and answer that for you: Obviously my argument was the "interesting benefits" Patrick outlined!

Then how does it benefit my single-player experience?

First of all this is a MP game, so its not about the SP experience, just like LOL there is single player for learning and taking your time.

On that note:

Your character progress never gets lost, your character can't be messed up by hackers, you can seamlessly play with your friends(name another ARPG where you can be be right next to your friend within 20 seconds of log in time without any transition from the one already playing). + the loot stuff Patrick was talking about. Also extra options for buying and selling items via AH. Less pressure on your own internet since things are run on their side. There's a heap of benefits if you only stop for a second and think.

In witcher I leveled my char from 10-12 over 10 times because of the BS crashes.

It's a single player game, with a mp option, like many others, including Diablo II. See, I'd play it alone, on my own pc, single player. It's not at all LOL with a "training mode". That's laughable. I can play through the whole campaign alone, as many times as I'd like, on whatever difficulty I like. Your logic is circular, "it's always online 'cuz it's a multiplayer game, it's a multiplayer game because it's always online".

Everything in your second paragraph is of no interest to single player. Unless 'hackers' break into my house and mess with my pc, they aren't ruining any of my single player games. If I'm playing offline, I have NO pressure on my internet. My character progress never gets lost in a single player offline game, unlike Diablo III, where people are losing progress all the time (hell, just watch Brad's video, where it happened to him).

Kindly pay attention to the arguments people make, and stop bending over backwards to try and justify foolish DRM schemes.

The game even gives you characters that only work in single player that you can hire for free, level up,and pick skills for . Saying this game is multiplayer only and that single player is a "training mode" is ridiculous.

That being said I don't mind the always online that much it does gets annoying if my internet goes down though.

Or if your account gets hacked. Not that that would ev... oh, wait: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/21/shout-at-the-devil-blizzard-acknowledges-diablo-iii-hacks/

It just did.

A single-player game, and one's account and information are at risk. I'm sorry, there's literally no excuse.

This is very unlike Blizzard to launch something before it's ready. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

@killr0y: I think a lot of this is nostalgia. I never played the first or the second game and I agree this doesn't look that interesting. I did enjoy Torchlight a lot but all these dungeon crawlers just blend with each other at some point. They're all the same.

Well I have.. purchased both, then bought the Diablo treasure pack or whatever it was a few years later.. Not sure why... but either way, it was then that I realized this genre of game couldn't offer me anything more and its time was over. Then Borderlands came and it showed me how a 1st/3rd person twist to the genre could make it interesting again. And that's when I REALLY couldn't get back into any of the dungeon crawlers ever again. So as nostalgic as I wish I was for this game, I can't find one ounce of anything in this game that interests me. If it came out 5 years ago, I think I'd still have a hard time justifying the purchase. The people who say this game looks good are comparing it to Diablo 2. Why haven't they given Duke Nukem Forever this type of consideration?

As much crap as you get for being "bad at games", I understand your pain. Sometimes you miss the obvious things that are right in front of you, because either you are in the mind-set of searching for something blatantly obvious, on fire, and jumping up and down...or hidden beneath some ridiculous hidden code.

And honestly, I wonder how many of your "critics" are so "quick" to pick up on in-game clues in *every game they play*.

Anywho, watching and hearing you play this game for the last two days has encouraged me to eventually purchase this game...once Blizzard gets their act together with their servers.

Keep up the good work, captain monotone.

I'd like to say that I mostly point out things the guys miss or misinterpret in games I haven't even played yet myself, what with them doing Quick Looks of recently released games and all. There's a pretty clear and established game language that's build up over the last 40 years and some people are just faster at picking it up than others. Jeff's really good about it, Brad and Ryan not so much.

But in any case, it's never meant as a critique as much as a hint for them and other people watching the video. Also, venting some frustration. ;)

It's amazing to me that some members of this community don't stop to ponder the idea that their only role in videos on this site is as a passive viewer. As such, they have more spare thought process to devote to interpreting what they see onscreen than someone who is both actively controlling the game and attempting to carry on a meaningful conversation with other people simultaneously.

To address the OP's speculation: I find this provides some valuable context to a lot of the self-important complaining you see about nearly everything online these days.

I agree, people just need to remember back to their childhood when they would have a friend over to play videogames with them. When it would be my friend's turn, I would literally sit there cringing at how much stuff he was missing and he would do the same for when I would be at the controls. This frustration would then essentially multiply if my mother walked into the room and started to talk. I would bet that everyone's response would to tell their mother to be quiet because it is nearly impossible to both carry on a conversation with your mom as well as not die in the video game.

People that actually get worked up about the quick lookers missing something ingame, then you seriously need to take a chill pill. Just because Brad missed picking up the secret hidden coin or what have you does not take away from my understanding of what the game is supposed to be. Same thing goes for if they miss a menu option. I mean who cares if in 1 hour (at the most) the quick look fails to explain every facet of the game. They are called "quick looks" for a reason.

Also, the Dunning-Krugger effect is almost a given when you are dealing with any sort of Homo sapiens. We all think we are better than the guy sitting directly beside us.

I don't get it... For a multi-bajillion dollar company, why is an update to a 10 year old top down loot grind remotely interesting? People seem to be so caught up in the semantics of what gets dropped after killing an enemy, I feel like I'm missing something. I don't see the gameplay as fresh or new. I don't see the graphics (especially the God-awful animation) remotely up to par with anything from the past 5 years of console dungeon crawlers. The fact that you need a constant online connection is like a kick in the face, but that is something I could overlook if the rest of the game didn't reek of boring rehash... Is there something else to the game that wasn't shown in the QL that I am missing that would explain why I'm so underwhelmed by just the concept of the game?

So if everyone should stop complaining about this game requiring an online connection to play by yourself (not multiplayer) because we all knew ahead of time, how many people would bitch if they knew there was no constant connection requirement but that you couldn't take a single player character online? I'm guessing the uproar would be exactly the same, but the game wouldn't be fucking broken horribly and wouldn't depend on a stupid internet connection to be perfect every time you wanted to play. Had the tables been turned the bitching would be the same and people that don't give two shits about online play would be happy as a clam. Either way Blizzard would be damned for their decision, but they'd be $60 richer because I would've bought this game and almost everyone that bought this game would be much happier. This is console type shit, I don't need my hand held or told I'm good at games and get a pat on the head. Let me play the damn game and if it's good I'll keep buying your games and maybe toss some money around at the auction house. Now? Not a chance.

The fact that I've gotten booted 6. Mother. Fucking. Times. using a friends guest pass is enough to convince me this was a monumentally stupid decision on the part of Blizzard or their masters. They've lost at minimum $60 simply because I can't play the game whenever I want. Who knows, I might've actually gotten into the game heavily, tried out multiplayer and spent real money on loot. The fact that there is always that risk of being booted out of my game when I'm sitting in my boxers killing motherfuckers while eating cheetos is an instant no deal for me. Release day troubles are no excuse, I should be able to play a $60 game that I bought whenever my dick gets hard and I wanna go dungeon diving. They've not only lost $60 but possibly a lot of further revenue from me simply because they are trying to monetize every single aspect of what could be an epic game, while at the same time making the game unplayable at launch and leaving a feeling of foreboding and dread any time I fire it up to play. That feeling will never go away and I'm not interested in doing parts of a game over because something inane like an internet connection brainfart occured. I'd rather play sections (or the whole game over) when I feel like it. The fact they chose this route loses them a potential 10 year customer buying awesome hats and sweet swords with actual money. Your loss Blizzard. I really liked what I did get to play and I've ignored this genre for a very long time because it looked really boring. Your wallet $60 lighter Blizzard. What a stupid decision.

Good thing Brad figured Elective Mode out at last, it's a real game-changer. It's a shame Blizzard has dumbed down the game so much that they'd hide it.

The way Blizzard hid elective mode is one of the more bizarre UI decisions in recent memory.

I should probably put my actual opinions on the video here. I had no interest in this game up until now, something I've stated a few times on this site, but this Second Look at DIII actually changed my mind. Weirdly enough it was the blacksmithing system at the end. Seems pretty interesting (to me, at least). Plus, I love monks ever since rolling one in D&D, hell, I always controlled the Monk character in Silver instead of David or whatever the main character's name was.

Thanks for the reply, though I think I already got that particular quest.

In any case, I know this is targeted at all the users that give you and the other guys shit for pretty much any Quick Look/Endurance Run video ever and that's clearly quite frustrating. Probably the number one reason why I never got into LPing (other then I don't think I can stay interesting for an entire game).

But I DID in fact play games blind before while keeping up a conversation. A buddy of mine actually bought Deadly Premonition and we alternated playing it after seeing the first episode of your ER "race" (though it really wasn't) and we went for doing 3-4 hours once a week on Saturdays. I played most of Lost Odyssey with a girlfriend. Of course it's not the same as playing for an audience and trying to be entertaining and/or informative at the same time.

@Village_Guy: I had the same problem, try going into your Internet Options (IE settings), go to the Connections tab, click LAN settings, and uncheck automatically detect settings.

I have 50Mbps download and it was only going at 100KBps, so it was killing me. After unchecking that it went much much better.

Diablo III is not an always-online single player game. It is an online-only multiplayer game with the option to play solo. Understand this.

No kidding, the giantbomb crew seem to be all approaching their 30s or are in the midst of it, don't be scared of maturity children, people just get bored of talking like a child eventually.

I love how Brad's always trying to impress people with his vocabulary.

I have never gotten that impression. Sure it's not just your vocab that's lacking?

BRAD TALK TOO FANCY

Signs of the coming Idiocracy: the usage of "big words" is interpreted as a threatening and pretentious act.

Why won't Brad identify that rare item? =(

I kept waiting for the game to go "hey here's where you get identify scrolls!" Took me a while to realize there are no scrolls and you just right-click them. So much time wasted. :(

Really glad that I haven't had time for this game. In a few weeks when I do pick it up there probably won't be any problems with it.

one can dream right?

usually these things work themselves out. Soon all the screaming and crying will die down and there will be another 10+ years of dudes and dudettes playing Diablo on the internets without issue.

came home from work last night, played for ten minutes, servers went down. Woke up early this morning on my day off today, servers down. This is the most diablo I've gotten since I bought the game.
