Lol. Believe it or not, Ryan's review of this game was the scale tipping factor in me buying this game. And I'm so glad I did. Budokai 3, to this day, is the BEST DBZ fighting game I've played.

I'm really confused. Why do each of the new DBZ games for the next gen consoles look progressively worse? In the PS2/Xbox era, they became closer and closer to looking exactly like the anime with their shading. Now it almost looks like the shading is looking less and less like the cartoon style/anime/etc and almost like claymation or something.

Am I alone in seeing this? If not, why are they getting worse at matching the style?

The first Budokai games, really though I'm referring to 3 because that was the only genuinely good game, were kind of a traditional 3D fighter with some RPG elements and crazy supers and finishers. Tenkaichi they got into this kind of open space type fighting game where the graphics took a hit and half the time your flying around all confused to where your opponent is.

Seriously cannot stand the Japanese voice for Goku (no offence), it makes it sound like he's younger than fucking Gohan, what's up with that?!

tenkaichi plays more like a versus action adventure game rather than a fighting game.

I like Dragon Ball Z a lot but I wish they would stop making these games. I know the story inside and out by now, I don't need yet another retelling. I liked Supersonic Warriors for the GBA because they had a bunch of what-if scenarios. Not to mention that is was actually fun too.

Last one of these I got was Burst Limit, and what a disappointment that was. Mechanically it was about what you'd expect, it was just severly lacking in content. Also I really miss the capsule system from Budokai 3, Senzu Bean + Babidi's Mind Control on Vegeta ftw.

God I would play a Buttlord GT game so hard.

Also Infinite World wasn't bad for a 2d DBZ fighting game, either.

Those original VO's are horrible. Last DBZ game I bought was Budokai 3, and until they remake this formula, it'll stay that way.

@Klei: Funny, I find the English dub voices (and music, etc) horrific myself (bar one or two exceptions), but I'm a pretty hardcore/crazy fan of the manga and Dragonball in general (not just "Z").

That said, even the original VO's here sound a little "rushed" compared to their original delivery on the shows. I guess twenty years (!) will do that to you.

As for the games... Budokai 3 Collector's Edition and Hyper Dimension FTW. Oh yeah, I went there. ;)

Looks like every other DBZ game from the past 5 years.

Haven't bought a DBZ game since Tenkaichi 2.

Used to hate the Japanese V/O till I watched the Kai remake with it, once you get used to it it's pretty neat.

Why won't they go back to the Budokai 3 formula that game was amazing...many broken controllers by my friends with the beam struggles lol

The beam fight thing was the only "error" I heard, and it seems a little silly to call him on that considering none of those games were released outside Japan. In fact, neither had the show itself at that time, really...

@Liquidus: Do people still love DBZ?Yes?Then duh they will keep buying this ,pretty dumb question.I personally think it looks good I got upset that it wasn't a 2d fighter but this one promises more adventure style story gameplay which I guess is nice.I just hope they give it the funimation dub and music if I have to listen to those awful japanese voices and annoying music I would throw the disc against the wall.

I love DBZ but they haven't made a good game since Tenkaichi 3 (some would say since Budokai 3).

While the new anime cutscenes look gorgeous, I can't say the same for the direction they took with the actual game's visuals. Why don't they return to the colorful, solid color style? The current one makes it look low-tech. They also need to vary characters a little bit more in their special abilities. The environments need to get more colorful and less ps2 looking. And the special moves have to get even more ridiculous a la Ninja Storm, it doesn't matter if it doesn't imitate the anime perfectly.

Goddamn it, just let Cyberconnect 2 take over! (if only)

That's not true, the 16 bit games were all out in Europe, where Dragon Ball and DBZ were popular since the eighties. I personally had the Mega Drive one, which I bought off the shelf. But if it wasn't known in the US and the games weren't released there I guess his line makes sense.

Will you also find me too harsh if I point out that equating "not in the US" to "not being released outside Japan" shows a bit of a smug ethnocentrism there? I do find it quite funny.

All this makes me think is damn I wish they would just reanimate DBZ all over again in the modern day. Cut the series down to 125 episodes, and just make it beautiful 1080P visuals.

This looks really good although my best experience with Dragon Ball has been Burst Limit that game was not only gorgeous but played really well. Also I have seen this series so many times that seeing those scenes from the episodes in HD is kind of odd.

@xobballox: Just curious why you hate his original Japanese voice so much? I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of hate for his voice here, and on most US-centric websites I've been on (shockingly not on most Europe sites, where they had the excellent Spanish dub or just left it in Japanese). Is it just because you heard the English voice first at the start of Z on Toonami or Cartoon Network, and can't imagine another voice? I wonder how many people with that opinion have actually seen more than one episode of the Japanese show or even any of Dragonball. Not trying to sound "zomg, you didn't watch the original!" elitist, but I'm genuinely curious. :)

I've heard people mention that he sounds too "young", but that's kind of missing the point. While it's not shown very well in this trailer, Goku's Japanese VA (and Gohan's, and Goten's; they're all the same person) has an impressive range from sounding incredibly child-like to super serious and flips on a whim when needed. This is also in-line with the character; Goku's initial innocence versus his maturity to world-saviour are reflected in the Japanese performances from the first episode of Dragonball when he meets Bulma right up until he's sizing up Cell in Z. In contrast, coming from that, all I hear when I watch the dub is a bunch of guys with heavy American accents shouting and grunting at each other (no offense to fans of that version!).

Anyway, sorry to derail this!

Also, with regards to the music in that trailer, it sounds far more like what you'd hear in a random Funimation dub replacement. I've heard over at daizex.com that we may be also getting the option of some Japanese music more akin to Shunsuke Kikuchi's mix of orchestral/80's rock from the original show, which would be an awesome alternative option.
