I love how Square somehow managed to find a character in the XIII universe that was more annoying than Hope and Vanille, then made them the star of the sequel.

Looks awful

The mini-maps definitely seemed less linear, so that's an improvement. I just don't particularly care about these characters or this world. I would be much happier with FFXV. That way they could start from a blank slate, rather than fitting things around the fairly-lame premises of the first game.

I'll wait for the verdict, but more FFXIII isn't necessarily something that I want.

Monsters look recycled and after days of farming and leveling in FF XIII-1 I am not sure if I want to see them again. In addition to that, the new male lead seems to be named "No"?! That's a stupid name and should be westernized.

After all I will buy it, because it's Final Fantasy, but I might be disappointed.

Yeah a lot of Japanese still play this, they aren't going to kill it.
A lot of americans still play this franchise too. And a lot of europeans. In fact, it sold more than Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 put together.

I greatly enjoyed FFXIII, so I'll probably check this out. It got a lot of unnecessary hate I feel, but I guess FF games do tend to be divisive (everyone always seems to compare the latest entry to whatever their favourite was, and then get angry when it wasn't FF#-2). The FF series is still going pretty strong for me, with only a couple real disappointments thus far, as far as I am concerned.

Milage may vary for others of course

Anime Hair: The Game
Which is always better than bald space marine. Every single crazy character design in Final Fantasy games is better than Mass Effect's Shepard but no one complains about him as much as they do anime-ish character designs.
Except default Shepard is modeled on an actual, physically real human. I fail to see the problem with trying to make a character visually relatable. Ridiculous anime hair only ever evokes the label "ridiculous anime person". Which is fine, but sure makes it much harder to take any seriously-presented emotion with the seriousness it may otherwise deserve.
Default Shepard visually, straight-up, is as relatable as National Geographic's estimation of the most average man in the world as far as I'm concerned and I'm an Chinese-American male close to the average age. It's what BioWare does with his facial expressions that really does anything. I'm not going to argue Western developers aren't better at expressing emotion though as far as in-game cutscenes or sequences go.

As somebody whose experience with Final Fantasy XIII veered wildly between love and hate, I'm anticipating the same thing here. I'll definitely buy it, but my relationship with JRPGs has become so fragile that I'll probably wait for a good few months post-release. The characters and story seem more annoying and contrived than FFXIII, though. Hopefully that will be balanced out with some genuine improvements in other areas of the game.

It's clear that you didn't play this game to the end or didn't take time to really understand what was going on.  The characters were some of the most dynamic characters that I have experienced in a video game in a very long time.  All of them significantly change and mature throughout their journey.  Although Snow was the least dynamic individual he was not a static character.  I'm not sure what word would describe how you felt about the game, but lacking "heart" is totally not accurate.  If anything, the franchise has always and continues to have "heart" if nothing else.   I really disliked FF-7 but the story had a ton of "heart".  I absolutely hated FFXII but it had "heart" as well.  I would argue that the Final Fantasy franchise hasn't really changed at all, maybe you and your expectations have.

@Bloviator & @TooWalrus: I loved the game as well!  I really think folks were extremely unfair about the overall quality of the game.  I do agree that Square took too long to allow the player to fully play the game, but I think they wanted to ensure that folks really understood the paradigm battle system.  Also this was their introduction to this franchise (Fabula Nova Crystallis)  so they really wanted to introduce and establish the story.  I would compare it to reading a Dickens novel, it takes a very long time to get into it but once you get past the most painful parts, it becomes extremely interesting and engaging.  I will disagree with you about the ending though!   I thought the ending was excellent.  Now, I am not unreasonably emotional but it really struck a cord with me. I actually cried, I thought the story was excellent and I thought it was a high quality experience.

I am excited for this new one as well.  I think if they give a little more trust to the player by not taking ten chapters to really open up the game, it will be their biggest improvement.

P.S.  I don't know what many critics of  FFXIII meant by describing it as too linear considering that every Final Fantasy that I have ever played was extremely linear (sure you could possibly go anywhere, but that could often result in a game over due to stacked monster encounters)  The map wasn't a new thing  either (FFX and X-2 used static maps) and I don't remember nearly as many complaints about those games.

In any result, Yay for FFXIII-2,  I'm hoping it will be another good experience.

I thought FFXII was a great evolution of FF in a more mature direction. I loved the giant world and insane detail.

FFXIII took all the excess that I tolerated in previous FF games to a new level. I'm so sick of every character being a Japanese glam rock star. The characters were so repetitive and empty. Especially Snow. Being pretty isn't good enough for an RPG. FF has no heart anymore.

This game doesn't appear to fix any of FFXIII's problems. It just looks like more pretty flashing lights and trendy clothes/hair. All flash. Japanese games just get more pandery every year. No wonder they're dying off.

I loved Final Fantasy XIII - it was an amazing game for me, the music, the scenery and the animations were really impressive and I loved the ocmbat system (especially when serious hard enemies and bosses started croping up and you had to really use the entire system to beat them - no playing itself there because if you just auto-battled then you were owned) I also liked the levelling system although it was kinda contrived - totally pumped for this and doesn't matter hwat anyone says - reviewer nor gamer - I am going to play the shit out of this game.

Although it was nowhere-near my favourite Final Fantasy game but I did prefer it hugely to 12 or the little I played of 3 and 9.

Final Fantasy XIII was shit.  At least X was decent.   this has the same fucking queer ass combat?? fuck you square, give us something good.  and no more combat that fucking plays itself.
Having just finished X again two nights ago, dude you are fucking insane.  Game structure wise, it is actually almost the exact same as XIII and the combat was far worse.

I loved FFXIII and with the exception of Noel and Serah and maybe the QTEs, this is only going to get better. It's really too bad people couldn't get into it because all the protagonists grow on you, the class/skill building was great and easy to use, it looked great and the combat system at it's best was awesome.

@mutha3: Yeah, it was totally grueling and I felt like I spent more time than I probably should have. I kept waiting to really enjoy myself and just didn't.

The JRPG lover in me, though, has difficulty accepting the fact that I don't really like Final Fantasy very much, so I often get an odd hankering to put myself through it again :/

@Cathryn: Huh. Alright, then.

But at least we can all agree  those first twenty hours are fucking grueling. I can't believe I wasted so much time, gave the game that big of a chance, when I have very little time to play videogames period these days.

But, noooooo, people kept going "IT GETS BETTER 20 HOURS IN MUTHA3, I SWEAR!!!!!"

Well, okay, it kinda does. Still sucks, though.

If you're hoping the battle system gets less unbearable and repetitive because of what people say online--

its wont. It continues sucking, save for a handful of battles which actually had you make up strategies.

TBH, I didn't mind the battle system that much, I just hated the hand holding throughout the first half of the game. I actually preferred it to XII's system (enough to stick with it for a few hours longer at least) and I dug the sphere grid, since it was a system I enjoyed from X. Problem is, the story wasn't interesting enough to make me want to power through combat I just sort've wasn't totally annoyed by (if it had XII's story, I would've stuck with it, I think).

I probably won't bother giving it another try, though -- only slightly tempted ;D

I think it's about time I start admitting to myself that I'm really not a Square-Enix fan at all :/

Man I really fucking hate American VO on Japanese games why is it that every time the voices sound so bad? Also I have noticed what I would call maybe a small trend where we hear a game be developed for a really long time, and once that game comes out one or two years later they have the next installment.

Well, the same actress that played Liara played Lightning in FFXIII, so it's maybe not a coincidence (I can't play the video atm, so I can't confirm)
