E3 2013: Let Max Payne Tell You All About Quantum Break

I enjoy watching and hearing Sam Lake speak.

Remedy equates, in my mind, to fantastic games, and this game looks to be no different. Too bad it might only be on XONE.

True, true. I just think that the gaming industry needs more Ken Levines, Shigeru Miyamotos and big names like the film industry has with directors. Sam Lake could easily be one of them, but y'know, people will have to start using his name for that to happen. Eh, it's a minor gripe anyway and he's still Finnish so it is highly unlikely he personally gives a damn what you call him as long as you're interested in his game.

I am pretty sure that the giantbomb crew knows about Sam's achievements in game development, they broached that subject a while ago in one of the bombcasts. In this case, it's more like a friendly jab at the guy, saying: look at this guy who made grade AAA games, but he also modeled that amusing grimacing face for Max Payne 1.

I love Remedy, but no, they did not need the Xbox One to make this.

They didn't exlain a gawd damn thing. But let me see if I can gleans anything

- Its an episodica game that also follows and episodic show...I think.
- The show will only be avaiable to what on Xbox One meaning it won't be a breakout hit on TV...it will just be a show they in on you box every two months.
- They use a lot of rhetoric that they can only do this on Xbox One, but what they mean is Microsoft is bankrolling both show and game. And that only owners can watch it.
- Their hook is they will have some set piece scenes where you walk into a scene in progress where time has stopped, you get to walk around and figure out what is happening...in most cases you have to determine what to move, who to save, and when or where to start time back up again to get some positive result.
- It sounds interesting, but my guess is it is also expansive and game production delays will be the weak spot.

Conclusion: This could succeed as a game, but fail as a show. It could be a great show with somewhat sketchy production value, but the game could fail to engage. Or, both could miss the mark the show not being compelling or well enough made and the game play not engaging people. But they least likely scenarios, sadly, is that both are good. I wish them luck.

SIDE NOTE: Imagine being a 3rd party that has tied itself to Microsoft, they have had to watch the train wreck of PR too. Imagine being a gamer yourself and watch as Microsoft makes a system that is ANTI-game meanwhile you have to make your product. If I were these people I wouldn't want to be working for/with Microsoft right now. I would feel slightly embarrassed to be making a game so closely tied to Xbox One. Again, I wish them all luck...

Calling Sam 'Max Payne' is like calling Nolan North 'Nathan Drake'. It's reductive and a little bit rude. The dude's done quite a bit more than be the face of a video game character...

Anyway, I think this looks neat even if I can never remember the name. Quantum Break is weirdly generic to me as a name.

Anybody else want to see that guy, The Voss guy, and maybe the dude from L.A. Noire sit down at a table together and creepily blow your mind?

I wonder if the TV portion is running in the Xbone Windows environment while the game runs simultaneously in the game environment. Although, I don't know what the point of that wwould be.

I don't see why people are so confused as to what this is. Being the "ultimate Remedy game" paints a pretty specific picture to me. Even if it didn't, all I need to know is that Sam Lake is at the helm.

This looks fantastic. Shame it's X1 exclusive. I don't mean that in any fanboyish way, but rather, because I'm buying a PS4 first and an X1 who knows when, I won't be able to experience this anytime soon.

I actually clapped and said "woo" to myself when Sam Lake came up on stage.

I still don't know what this game is. How exactly does the player manipulate time to choose his/her own story path? I need to see some actual gameplay footage.

PC Remember, PC. I know MS has done their best to corner you with the sweetest deal. But when the time comes..this is a PC game.... you can tell by the pedigree. Some would say the blood.

I was about to say "wow wouldn't it be crazy if someone built a 9/11 simulator where you try to escape the building AS it's crumbling around you!". Then I realized that escaping buildings while they are being destroyed is already an active trope in movies and games. Except the difference being that you always know that you/the protagonists are going to escape.. If a game can effectively portray the terror of actually being hit by a terrorist attack.. well.. that would be amazing.

Still have no idea what this game is. How does it tie in with the tv show as well? From Lake's comments of each person making their own director's cut, I almost get the vibe that this is going to be like a "choose your own adventure" game where there is an amount of choices you can make and whatever one you choose is accurately depicted in/along with the show. Each player could potentially end up with wildly different stories, which would be really interesting. Its such a shame that I have no interest in getting an Xbox One though. Hopefully this comes to PC.

What a difference a day makes. Monday afternoon I was psyched about playing Quantum Break, now I'm bummed it's an Xbone exclusive. Hopefully it follows the Alan Wake path and comes to PC.

As to the video itself, dude gets an "F" for explaining what the game is, but I'm guessing based on the footage it's something like Fringe crossed with 24 but a video game. Still, I like me some Remedy so come on PC, or unfuck yourself quick Microsoft. One or the other.

@fistfulofmetal: Damn skippy sir. No PC version I'm not playing it. Alan Wake still is one of the best looking PC games out there the lighting effects are second to none. Also the whole not buying an XBone but thats just besides the point.

This looks so fucking great. I can't wait for it.

So action set pieces and good face animations... I'm still missing the part where this is a game. I'm optimistic though Remedy hasn't really ever let me down. Fingers crossed for a PC release.

As with this past generation, I will sadly miss out on another great Remedy game...but I was gonna stick with Sony no matter what.

Am I the only one who would friggin' love an audiobook narrated by Sam Lake?
