Graphic novels are graphic novels they're published as a book be it a hardcover or a paperback. Comics are comics they're released as issues and then collected into trades the nature of a comic doesn't suddenly evolve into a graphic novel because it deals with the holocaust and not superheroes. That was some serious bs coming from Patrick.

It's not surprising. On the bombcast, the term "comic book" is basically a derogatory term whenever they use it to describe a story, a game or a movie.

Aside from Ryan and Dave, Giantbomb doesn't know shit about comics.

Didn't Patrick say Robert Kirkman just "stumbled" into The Walking Dead? I mean, shiiiiiiit....

I always go back to that Neil Gaiman quote when it comes to 'comic books' vs. 'graphic novels':

"So as far as I can tell, it's just a difference between being a hooker and a lady of the evening. Basically. The nice thing about calling them graphic novels is that people who can't quite cope with comic books can cope with them under the term "graphic novels." And in the case of something like the Sandman series, it's more or less a marketing term."

Personally, I think graphic novel is a little more accurate since most of them aren't particularly funny ( nor are they meant to be). But I got no problem with 'video game'. Anything else they can come up with would just be politically correct BS or stupid, fake sci-fi sounding crap.

people were just straight up happy to actually have some ladies speak up and show its not all doom and gloom as a women in the gaming industry, obviously its not the overall rule as there are others that have bad experiences,

but it was just straight up good to hear some nice down to earth ladies talk about the subject and talk about their positive experiences in the industry and just show that it isnt as bad as the media makes it out to be.

as someone that has avoided all sexism talk and doesnt care at all to listen to the subject, i will say, if "sexism" had a spokeswomen like carrie or stephanie rather than anita or patrick (say what you will and call me a bad person, but i just really dont like that girl, she doesnt seem like a likeable person at all.) i would be more inclined to fully listen. and judging by how much people felt some comfirmation bias in the chat by listening to carrie and stephanie, id imagine more would as well.

I do think that a lot of potential support (or, at least, understanding and empathy) is lost in the way people approach the topic. It is often presented in a hostile or antagonizing way that makes an entire gender feel like they're across-the-board guilty of something, have to change everything they enjoy about their career or recreational activity, and are generally under attack. The response is to become defensive, shut down the part of themselves that is open to an actual dialog and exchange of ideas that leads to understanding and you ultimately just end up with more people who either skip along and ignore every incident and issue like this or who act like assholes in some weird sort of defense mechanism.

This is not to say there isn't justification for feeling hostile in a lot of these situations, but like it or not it ultimately becomes a matter of getting people to empathize with you're going through and support changing it. That means stepping back and approaching it in a way that doesn't make people defensive or provoke hostility, if at all possible. This is where one of my major peeves comes in -- the constant abuse of the word "misogynist". An extremely loaded word that is almost never used appropriately. It's a favorite word of game journalists who seem to think it's synonymous with "sexist" or "anything that someone finds uncomfortable, offensive, or insensitive". Such a strong and loaded word being thrown around is a terrific example of how even generally reasonable people suddenly are worried about defending their gender, hobby, or business instead of focusing on the actual issue of improving treatment of women in the industry and expanding the portrayal of women (and gay people, non-white people, other nationalities, other body types, and ages and so on) to include something more. Hell, even to portray general white male dudes as something more than they are, for that matter.

As a result, I think you saw a lot of comments in the chat during the comments by Carrie and Stephanie that echoed this sort of exhausted relief that we can all get along and want the same improvements and not feel like we're monsters for whatever genitalia we've been assigned. They didn't dismiss the problems, but they echoed a really common sentiment of "I just want to make or play awesome games and everyone needs to calm the fuck down and grow the fuck up so we can get back to doing that". Somehow, a few people took that as a complete dismissal of the issue, I guess. I guess you're supposed to be more exclusive in your demand for inclusiveness or something.

On the other hand, I can also see how it can be incredibly hard to approach it that way. If you have dealt with a lot of incidents over your career, how do you tamp that down enough that you can present it to people in a way that brings them onboard to supporting you and listening to you, rather than railing against it all and putting them (sensibly or not) on the defensive and losing them? Traditionally, I'm of the "club all the idiots over the head and force things to be rectified" mindset where everything is concerned (homophobia, religion, sexism, etc) -- and I'm not really even personally impacted by any of those things. . . so even though the raging often pushes away the people you're trying to bring on board (or change the views/behavior of), it sure as hell is understandable.

im very humbled that you wrote so much to my comment, ive responded back to you via a PM, id rather not clutter the comments section with a big conversation, you are one of the few users ive seen that "gets" where the other side that doesnt want to listen to the whole "sexism" thing comes from.

@endurancefun: That guy just said there are misogynists in the comments section, which isn't an unfair thing to say. He never mentioned anyone specifically >_>

But it IS the comments section on a video game website, and I totally understand the urge to make a short "fuck you assholes" comment rather than spend time putting together something more meaningful.

Why is it that with women the first thing that is attacked is their looks simply put it works just like the first thing attacked with a man is their manhood.

@phished0ne: Dude, pretty sure Phil Fish was joking about that. It's a silly twitter comment. If Ryan tweeted that of course you would see it as a joke. Also, I don't think he was able to talk about any other version of the game because of his contract with Microsoft. And he probably didn't even want to hint at other versions because he might not have been sure if he would actually do them and didn't want to discourage people from buying the game on 360. Even if none of that is true there is nothing wrong with changing your mind.

So why don't people like Phil Fish? I must have missed some sort of internet outrage or something, because he seemed like a pretty cool and interesting dude.

Because he said Japanese game design/business is stagnating (which it is) and people the internet heard racism.

You can't generalize about an entire race of people and say, "That's not racist." That's literally the definition of racism. He is a racist. End of story.

lol, he didn't generalize "about an entire race of people." He said he didn't like the kind of game design that is prevalent in Japan. Nothing wrong with that. It's okay to not like a style common to one area. It's okay to not like the common design philosophies in eastern European games for instance, or to not like Italian architecture.

Also, that is not the definition of racism. Racism is believing one race is superior to another or hating a particular race. What Phil said was more of a stereotype. There is a serious difference.

It's probably not me perceiving anything real but I've just been noticing of late that the content on the site has been as great as always but comments have been getting assy. Again, hard to say why that is or where that really comes from without sitting down and doing the analysis but it strikes me as odd whenever I'm seeing comments sections progress as they are when I felt the content ranges from fine to downright wonderful. Probably was always the case, just noticing it more.

Absolutely fantastic and inspiring stream. The audio talk, the vomit story, the cake story, the touchy feely stuff; all great to hear. I've been taking my first steps into game development and I really hope to someday be a part of this grander community.

It's crazy to me how no game industry person seems willing to admit that Anita Sarkeesian got so much hate because she promoted sex segregation in public transport, claimed that women should not show affection for their partners because it promotes the idea to other people that "the only thing women needs is men", said that women and men treated as equals is a sexist 'Mrs Male' trope because the woman should be interested in more feminine things like motherhood, said that strong female characters are just trying to be 'Men with Boobs', and that the only merit to an attractive female character is that they're a 'fuck toy' for men to masturbate to.

That's why people are venomous towards her.

If anyone else is interested in hearing a more fair, intelligent, and unbiased viewpoint on Anita's first kickstarter video, I highly recommend this video by KiteTales.

Here's what he said:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-03-07-fez-creator-phil-fish-declares-modern-japanese-games-just-suck

I'll say it again. Fuck him. Get back to me when you've made something worthwhile.

So he was rude and now you hate him? Have you never been rude to anyone, ever? If so, you're a better person than just about everyone else on this planet. Congratulations.

Also Fez was universally regarded as one of the best games of last year. The fact that you don't agree is totally fine, because you're entitled to your own opinion. But he has made something worthwhile in the eyes of many, many people, including the creators and staffers of the site you're commenting on!

He was beyond rude I'd say. Also GTAIV was thought to be the greatest thing since sliced bread at one point. That clearly isn't the thought process anymore. I don't exactly trust the gaming press on these sort of matters.

How was he beyond rude? He said "your games suck."

That's definitely rude, but it's hardly anything more than that. It's not like he gave the guy the finger while he was saying it.

And you must be the first person in history to compare Fez to GTA IV. Truly Bizarre. It really doesn't help your case that you can't think of a better rebuttal than that.

You don't trust the gaming press on "these sort of matters"? So you don't trust the gaming press on games?! How do you decide which games to buy? Maybe you just buy every game in existence and then review them all yourself or something... I highly doubt it. I suspect that, like most of the rest of us, you actually do pay attention to what the gaming press say and you adjust your purchasing patterns accordingly. If you are somehow above that process, you probably end up buying a lot of shitty games and wasting a lot of money. The point of the gaming press is that it's diverse. You find writers you like, who have a taste in games that matches, or approximates, your own and you roll with it. There is no singular entity called "the gaming press" that has one opinion about everything. That's why it's remarkable when games receive near-universal acclaim (like Fez did).

To summarize, your comments sound pretty reductive. I suspect that your actual (reductive) reasoning goes something like this: "I like Japanese games and Phil Fish said mean stuff about a thing that I like and insulted my personal taste. I can't ignore this totally meaningless slight, so I'm going to have a disproportionate reaction to this thing that doesn't matter at all."

Well, yeah, but only to say that it's not surprising that a game being made by two people (versus one being made by 1,000 people) is taking a long time to make. He's not comparing them qualitatively.

True enough. My original statement was overly general. What I meant was looking at Fez qualitatively though the lens of how good or bad GTA "really" is is totally ridiculous and has nothing to do with whether or not Phil Fish has created something worthwhile.

What does liking/not liking GTA IV have to do with Fez being worthwhile or not? Nothing. That was my only point.

@a_beluga_whale: Good point. Though I do find even the comparison Phil made about development, the simplification down to a pure number of developers and man hours, quite an illuminating display of ignorance. He has a bad case of foot-in-mouth syndrome.

However, he's good fun. The best personalities usually are the most divisive.
