Here's That Crazy Ass Metal Gear Solid V Trailer Everyone's Talking About

So which part of this do we want to try and wrap our heads around first? My vote goes to the flying fire whale.

I'm going off of almost 15 year old memories here, but the story implied by this trailer makes a lot of sense to me. It all fits in with the "Les Enfants Terribles" project as explained by liquid in MGS1 after you beat Metal Gear Rex. The two phantoms they are referring to are Solid and Liquid Snake. Ground Zeroes just tells the story of the Combat Mission that put Big Boss in a Coma. Obviously, this "dream coma" gives Hideo Kojima an excuse to do a lot of buck wild shit with the story of MGS5. It's possible that you play as Big Boss, Solid Snake, and Liquid Snake through out this game. Also, the burned man is probably Big Boss (after Solid Snake torched him) trying to restart Outer Heaven. You probably play as Liquid in that section. Basically, I'm saying this game sets up Outer Heaven as well as MGS1.

What about 43rd President of the United States George Sears?

Good guess, but you're a bit off. Les Enfants Terribles occurred in 1972, before Peace Walker. It was what made Big Boss leave the Patriots, and 'the twins' themselves were mentioned by Miller in one of those audio recordings. The 'two phantoms' probably do refer to the twin clones, but also to Zero and Big Boss.

And Solidus was born after Solid and Liquid in a separate project for separate reasons.

I would assume this game has something to do with the founding of FOXHOUND. The big twist in Metal Gear 1 is that Big Boss is commanding FOXHOUND and Outer Heaven at the same time. Seeing as Diamond Dogs (Hound) + XOF (Fox) makes FOXHOUND, I'll assume that Big Boss joins back up with Zero so that Zero won't come and put him in any more comas, while continuing to secretly oppose him via Outer Heaven.

If this is true, then it makes Portable Ops almost entirely non-canon. I think it's an acceptable loss.

Guys, I haven't played an MGS since the first one.

WTF DID I MISS!?

Hm... Where to start?

Well, Ocelot replaced his missing arm with Liquid Snake's, and then the soul of Liquid possessed him...

But it turns out it wasn't actually a possession. You see, Revolver Ocelot was working for the Patriots all along to infiltrate Liquid Snake's gang. When Liquid died by Solid's hands, Ocelot grafts his arm on to replace his own lost arm from a C4 explosion. He then willingly brainwashes himself so that he thinks he's Liquid, becoming Liquid Ocelot. That way he can command Liquid's army, while being a Patriot agent, but oh no, his brainwashing and nanomachines are so powerful that he forgets he's a Patriot Agent and he runs off on a mad Liquid scheme. Also, the Patriots pretended to be the souls of dead politicians living in the White House's walls, when they're actually just the computer AIs left behind by the original Patriots who were the guys supporting you on the radio in Metal Gear Solid 3. Oh, and the Patriots helped the third Big Boss clone, Solidus Snake, become the President of the United States, but then later he gets in trouble in one of Liquid Ocelot's schemes and Solid Snake kills Solidus. But he doesn't actually kill Solidus, because they uses all of Solidus parts to graft on to the comatose body of Big Boss, ruined by Solid Snake ages ago, to resurrect him. Solidus Snake's mutilated body dies a terrible death in MGS4, and the ressurected Big Boss gets killed by the FoxDie that's still in Solid Snake's system when they go and hang out on a graveyard where the Boss, Big Boss' mentor, is buried.

See? It all makes perfect sense. :kojima:

The graveyard scene did give us the series most powerful moment though; Solid Snake and Big Boss sharing a cigar together.

Loading Video...

Ok. Yes. This story is convoluted. But it is able to be followed.

The Patriots never claimed to be dead souls in the white house. I believe the quote was along the lines of that they were born in the walls (or ashes, I can't remember) of the white house. It's a metaphor, since they were born from American politics and ideals.

They elected Soldius to be president because they created Solidus for the sole purpose of being a figurehead and replacement for Big Boss after he left the organization. Solidus became fed up with his position as a puppet under them, and so he had Ocelot persuade Liquid into doing the Shadow Moses incident in an attempt to fight the Patriots. This obvious failed, as seen in MGS1.

Understandably, this made the Patriots a little upset. Solidus was unaware that Ocelot was a Patriot spy, so he was also unaware that they knew about his involvement with Shadow Moses. Solidus then decided to stop fucking around, and orchestrated the Big Shell incident in an attempt to steal the names of the members of the Patriots, aka the 'Wiseman's Committee' so that he could personally murder them all.

Well this list was useless, because the Wiseman's Committee was a list of names of members of the American Philosophers, a kind of 'proto'-Patriots type club of super influential people, and they were all dead for over 100 years by MGS2.

Solidus never learned this because Raiden, sent in by the Patriots, killed him before he could find out. The Patriots, masters of information control, probably lead Solidus to believe that the Wiseman's committee were the members of the Patriots because it would mean that even if Solidus succeeded in his plan, he would pose no threat.

So let's have a review: Patriots use Solidus, Solidus gets mad, they kill him. Fairly logical progression if you boil it down. Let's go to Ocelot then.

Ocelot was an original, founding member of the Patriots. He looked up to both the Boss, and especially Big Boss, to the point that he would not join the Patriots if Big Boss did not join. Well, Big Boss leaves the group, and he and Eva become disillusioned about the whole thing. Eva probably leaves at this point, but that hasn't really been covered. Point is that Ocelot stays.

Ocelot was used as a spy by the organization, and as such he purposefully sabotages the Shadow Moses uprising (by killing the Darpa chief, a fellow Patriot founder, as well as by a few other means of sabotage). Ocelot had probably been looking for a way to openly oppose the organization for years, at least since the 70s, but he probably didn't figure it out until after the Shadow Moses incident.

Here's where it gets a little confusing. In MGS2, Ocelot and Solidus both have the same goal: they want to kill the Patriots. However, Solidus's plan was set up for failure by the Patriots from it's conception, while they were completely unaware of Ocelot's plan.

What was his plan?

Well, Ocelot knew the Patriots were machines. And, like machines, they had a certain order and logic to their thinking process, an order that could be exploited. He knew that the AI systems cannot deviate from certain courses of action. Basically, he knew how they would react to Liquid opposing them; they would send in Solid Snake to kill him as they did before (during Shadow Moses). If Ocelot openly opposed them, then their response would be unpredictable.

So he 'became' Liquid's mental doppleganger. The Patriots, thinking he was Liquid, did exactly what he thought they would: they sent in Solid Snake. The reason Snake is able to work outside of SOP during MGS4 is because the Patriots were assisting him in fighting Liquid Ocelot, a fact he was not aware of. Ocelot's plan would also succeed no matter what happened; if Solid Snake killed him, he would take down the Patriots as he actually did in the game. However, if Snake died, then Ocelot would have destroyed JD, the master AI, as was Liquid Ocelot's plan. No matter what, the Patriots would end up gone.

So another review: Ocelot wanted to end the Patriots. Since he knew exactly what the Patriots would do if Liquid opposed them again, he became Liquid and opposed them. Think of it like taking a test after you've already taken it once; you would likely do much better on the test. Knowing generally how things would play out, Ocelot, Eva, et. al were able to manipulate things in such a way as to bring about the fall of the Patriots.

Now that we are out of that info-dump minefield, I'll go on to the easy things.

First, the original Patriots were Zero, Big Boss, Eva, Ocelot, Para-medic, and Sigint. Zero eventually just hijacked the group for himself, and basically made all the decisions. So Big Boss and Eva left, and Ocelot hated his guts (see above).

Well, Zero was born in 1912. So by probably the 90's, running this super government was getting to be a real problem. Since the only remaining members of the Patriots probably couldn't carry on his legacy, he expanded upon the AI created during the Peace Walker project and made the AI's seen in 2 and 4 to carry on his ideals.

Also, the Patriots were created to carry on the Boss's philosophy about a unified world. Oh, and they were funded by the Philospher's legacy, which was like billions of dollars collected by the Philosophers (see above).

Yes. Kojima made it all up as he went along (However, as a fan of Lost and the X-files, I must say that making up these things as you go along can get a lot worse. At least he tied up everything in this fiction). Yes, he uses nanomachines as a crutch. Yeah, it has some bad dialogue and gets up its ass occasionally.

Ryan Davis said if you take these game's plot seriously, then you are an idiot. Well, these games are not Ulysses or anything, but I think they have some really cool themes, and a really fun lore if you want to get lost in all the piecing together of everything.

I think both portable ops, peacewalker, and some other metal gear fiction is going to be completely disregarded in this one in favor of a more flexible story. MGS5 is going to be kind of like a reboot in this sense. I think MGS5 is going to be an epic starting out before 1972 with Big Boss being Wounded in Ground Zeroes; To the Les Enfants Terribles project and Big Bosses Coma; to Big Bosses founding of Outer Heaven, Fox Hound, and the his big ideological shift (This is where they will toss out the psp games); then a possible re-imagining of MG1 and MG2 with Solid Snake; and, finally, Liquid's story. All of this will serve to set up MGS1 and a possible reboot of the MGS franchise. Also, Outer Space and Space Whales will be thrown in for good measure. Wouldn't all that be awesome?

So in the operating room we have three patients? Miller, Boss, and someone else? When they inform Miller that boss is in a coma, Miller asks "what about him?" Any bets on who he's referring to? Am I missing something here?

  2. I wonder if part of this was inspired by Rocky V.

I can't believe they didn't even ask him! What if he just.. doesn't talk at all? Or had some kind of bullshit robot voice or is possessed? Apparently Kojima had a reason but it doesn't sound like Hayter was informed at all which is really sad because he loves that character.

MGS is not really that hard to follow, it just requires a little bit of attention. And playing the games, not just trying to glean things out of context.

It's silly and wacky and ham fisted, but it has a good heart and some interesting human insights if you don't get cynical about it and dismiss it immediately. Which is very easy to do.

Well of course if you're looking at the 10th game in a series it's gonna look like it doesn't make any sense, there's over a decade worth of mythology surrounding it. I'm sure if you also started watching an anime on it's 300th episode it's gonna look like utter nonsense. But everything starts with that first step, Metal Gear Solid.

There's a fun sort of madness in trying to keep up with the story, but the games are cool on their own even if you don't get it. It's like watching only the third Jason Bourne movie or something like that. Sure, a lot goes over your head, but there's still spys and shit shooting eachother and doing silly stuff and people get killed like 5 times before really being killed.

I think what screws me up is that there is like 6 of the same character who all look exactly the same in MSG. So I don't know who is who on screen so any attempts to try to follow what is going on is met with my brain exploding. On the plus side the writing is always overly complex as if to imply something absolutely crazy is going on, the editing and sound stuff is always great and it looks pretty. So while a lot of may end up as nonsense from a substance perspective, at least it has style.

My biggest issue with MSG is that they have never really been all that fun to play. This looks like it tries to bridge some of the gap at least from the parts of gameplay footage I saw.

So... no David Hayter.

I know what I'm going to say sounds trivial and completely ignorant, but I'm probably going to skip this one now. After how many years and how many games they just go with another dude? No thanks. That will be far to jarring to me. That voice is iconic and it shouldn't be fucked with.

Granted I get that they used a different guy for Big Boss in MGS4 but it doesn't matter. It's just... dumb to mess with something like that that people can clearly identify.

One clue I've spotted is toward the end, but don't know how it relates. When the female voice reads the title "V has come to." it sounds slightly German, as in "Wie hast komm du?", which I think means "Why have you come?". My German is pretty rubbish, though.

Could be; 'He has come to..' meaning, he's awoke from his coma.

I... okay, look. I love me some MGS. I think the series is pretty crazy - it does some real cool action Hollywood stuff mixed with just the right amount of crazy anime japanese stuff that makes me not take it too seriously, but really love it. With that said... I thought this trailer was awesome. It's Kojima alright.

But Hayter... I dunno man. He is _such_ a part of the character, whether he be Solid Snake or Big Boss, he is THE voice of Metal Gear. I don't know how Kojima could not have signed him back on... does that mean the Japanese voice actor Akio Otsuka is not on board?

It was pointed out in the Neogaf thread regarding the first showing Phantom Pains. The Burning man with the glowing eyes resembles Volgin.

Diamond Dogs is also the name of David Bowie album that was released in 1974.

I don't suppose the British flag in the hospital room has any sort of historical connection? In comment section from other sites, Cyprus has been brought up.

This is a shot in the dark but could there be a chance that the man with the bandaged face could be Frank Jaeger? I didn't play Portable Ops and don't know what happened to him after San Hieronymo. He eventually meets up with Big Boss in the 80s.

After what is shown, I looking forward to see how MGS5 turns out.

I only played MGS2...........I don't know what the fuck this is.

I only played MGS1, MGS2, MGS2 Substance, MGS3, MGS3 Subsistence, and MGS4 all multiple times and I DONT KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS. But I like it and this trailer was enchanting.

I dont care what this is, Kojima-san, but I'm on board.

Ah, you see, it's probably all answered in Peace walker.
