I remember being blown away by the first one, even though it probably ran at 10 FPS on my PC at the time.

Yah! It's crazy cause in my mind it looked like the remastered version. I honestly didn't remember it being THAT polygonal. Memory, it's nuts!

I remember loving the original Homeworld, but I was so bad at RTS games at the time that I just couldn't get past the first few levels. It'll be interesting to revisit them!

Can't wait. I'm always amazed that nobody has tried to do strategic 3D space combat similar to Homeworld. Difficult at hell at times, but still great.

Though the amount of people I've heard that loved the game but couldn't wrap their mind around 3D strategy probably explains that. It's learning an entirely new skill compared to most other RTS games. It always reminds me about how Ender's Game essentially started as a way to teach people how to fight war in a fully 3D space, since it would require rethinking almost all of your assumptions about combat.

I was the same. Loved the look and feel of the game, but I remember getting to some level that you had to fly through clouds in some special way, and just getting stuck. I look forward to seeing it again.

3D strategy was never fully top-of-mind when it came to actually playing the game. What you did need to understand was the rock/paper/scissors of fighters/corvettes/frigates, respectively.

Also, this is great news. Homeworld seriously had the best sci-fi story and presentation in class (yes, even surpassing StarCraft for me), and you're doing yourself a disservice from not playing it to completion. Seriously, the last mission has a "twist" that made me shed several tears way back when.

And dat Adagio for Strings in mission 3. Oh man, I'm looking forward to reliving this.

Not really that much better than some of the HD texture mods out there, but still pretty.

I hope it's not just a re-texturing but also some interface and code optimizations. Improved AI maybe?

Awesome, I never got too far with the original but I'm ready to take another crack at it.

So this is Homeworld 1 & 2, but what about the Cataclysm expansion?

If only I had any skills, I would set about a mod to fuse this with some sort of procedural mission generator to make my ideal battlestar survivemup.

I can't wait to hear all the radio chatter in the first few missions again.

@nictel: The UI looks all new, from some short clips that float out there from PAX. It looks sleek.

And for those asking, this is 1 and 2 classic and 1 and 2 remastered in a single package for thirty bucks. No Cataclysm, but that's fine, because that would have spoiled it.

@betaband: Boy, I hope Shipbreakers is decent. I won't go so far as to hope that it's as good as Homeworld 1 or 2.

I am really excited for this. I still get goosebumps when I think about these games. The radio chatter and the engine trails, and all the rest of the sound design. I foolishly lent Homeworld 2 to a friend in highschool and never got it back, and I never actually owned a copy of Homeworld 1. Getting both with snazzy graphics and widescreen friendly UI will be nice.

Homeworld is my personal #1 game of all time. I've played it through at least once every other year since it came out and I still love it every single time.

Homeworld 2...not so much. The lead designer ruined the game by wanting to turn it into Starcraft.

I wonder how this version will handle difficulty - the original games were notoriously difficult because of the way the dynamic difficulty scales (or maybe that was just Homeworld 2... someone remind me?), and required some real weird playthroughs to get it to completion.

Sorry to say the Gearbox name still makes me nervous. They don't have a remake or a RTS track record worth believing in. I would literally have more faith if it was Iron Galaxy.

I remember some cases where I would prepare for a level by ensuring I brought certain ships from the last level. Anything involving remote waypoint triggers and splitting your fleet across the map could get a bit dicey. Seriously though it was all cake compared to Cataclysm. Got wrecked so much.

This is timely, I am 100% in the mood for a 3d space RTS.

I knew space games would come back eventually and right now I am so gosh darn happy.

What made this RTS so unique, was the persistence of your fleet from mission to mission. It definitely was this rogue-like aspect of the game that made it so appealing to me.

In OG Homeworld, the simple fact that you keep your fleet through all missions could really screw you up in the later missions. I could not beat the mission where the enemy attacks with a bunch of missile corvettes. because I had simply no counter unit.. Fun times.

I might pick this up if the price is right (certainly not for 40+ bones).

Stoked, espcially for the multiplayer support, since WON and Gamespy are long gone.

Additionally as a person that ran a fanpage for Homeworld back in the day, I guess I am unser some kind of contractual obligation to buy the collectors edition.

Also I just noticed that my page is still the first result on Google when you search for the old german Homeworld patch. The world is weird

The first RTS that justified switching to polygonal 3D graphics, and so far the three Homeworld games are also the only games doing that. Fantastic games, but a little disappointing that they don't even include Cataclysm as part of the classic games included. I get that remastering it would be hard with the lost code, but whatever tweaks they're doing to the original Homeworld 1 to run on modern systems (I assume it's doing some compatibility settings and possibly adding nglide or bitpatcher's directdraw wrapper) should work for the original version of Cataclysm as well.
