Hey look! It's an MMO so all the areas are ridiculously oversized as if though giants lived there.

I really don't think this game is taking the MMO genre in the right direction. I want less instancing, not more. What's the point of an online game you mostly play by yourself?

Really? Strong complaint over the "rail-shooter" mini-game? Star Fox is mostly an on rail shooter. NES had a plethora of on rail shooter. They were all great games with ships in space and were as fun as heck! I don't have SwoToR yet and the rail shooter is fine because you don't know what is going to happen next unless you played it a few times. Which is what happens on rail shooters but does not make them less fun.

They are indeed a welcome diversion. Being lvl 35 now, some of these get almost tricky. They constantly add new mechanics too. I now have the ability to divert power to weapons or shields. Either deal more damage at the expense of shield regeneration or vice versa. Nifty.

Whilst building a group for a flashpoint, I often pass the time with a fly mission or two. Or just to ease up a bit. I really don't get the hate either. It's quite fun. I don't understand how a Rebel Assault minigame is considered to be unfit for a Star Wars MMO. It clearly fits the bill.

That said. It was a fun quicklook.

Bioware: Recycling animations since KotOR 1.

It doesn't look like a 100 million dollar game.

This looks kind of cool. However, I don't know how MMO's work and don't like Star Wars. The first one was pretty good, but silly. The the empire strikes back and return of the Jedi were way too focused on special effects. I met Alec Guinness once in the mid 90's. I talked to him about his film career and did not mention Star Wars. I think he appreciated that.

Disagree regarding the space missions.

While I would prefer a Freelancer style open universe between planets, I think the space mission dailies are much better than the daily content in games like WoW. It's fun, it's short, and it isnt a competition for quest targets with friendly players. I much prefer doing the space battles to doing "kill X guys" quests that are so common in the genre.

The environments are so fucking terrible. Why is every room a massive empty warehouse? Who would build something like that? It's like somebody got the scale wrong on an architect's blueprints.

Yeah, let's make this room a kilometer square, and put one guy in the corner, and the only furnishing is a chair 500 meters away from him. Yep, looks good just like that. We've built an immersive world here, people.

Posted by SkullcrusherMountain

@HorseMeatRider: Go watch a Star Wars movie, dude. They have gigantic buildings, for no seemingly good reason.

I have gone from zero interest to actually just buying this based purely on Giantbomb's coverage. Oh lord.

Yeah, it really doesn't. But you can tell it was made by committee.

Surprised to read that to be honest. If anything they've solidified my suspicions about similarities to other MMOs, particularly WoW. Not sure I can do much more of that kind of thing.

It feels a bit like the universe has been stretched so thinly over the genre's template. Little things like adding crit gems to a lightsaber... I dunno.

Edit: Actually, thinking about it, if it just wasn't this universe and what my expectations have become of it over the years, I might not mind it. If I wasn't expecting, again a lightsaber, to slice straight through anything, I might not mind is just sparking on guys in the MMO dice roll combat style. Which then just makes me think I should give it a chance for the Mass Effect-ISH solo style which I am a fan of.

Kinda with on this one, the bombcast got me somewhat interested and actually seeing the game being played made me completely disinterested. Maybe when it inevitably goes free to play I'll give it a try.

Besides, the space combat just made me reminisce about how great Star Wars: TIE Fighter was. I probably put more hours into that game than I would ever put into TOR.

Star Wars Shadows Of The Empire - N64 game with better 3rd person gameplay

Star Wars Rogue Squadron - N64 game with better flying gameplay

Star Wars Episode One Pod Racer - N64 racing game with cool vehicle customization and good unique gameplay

Everything here has been done better on the N64 from a fundamental gameplay point of view. All they added was multiplayer and lots of dialogue. Good for them for adding content that is basically a formula. TOR is one giant compromise.

But the mindless animal part of my brain is really interested, so I can't really complain beyond taking a sigh and thinking about the lack of fundamental progress. Looks like a great refined version of many previously existing ideas though. So thats awesome.

Things that were left out, the pvp is good at least from the beta (all I can talk about as I can't budget time or money for this game yet) though it is somewhat unbalanced in some ways all classes seem to be useful. Companion comments (which they may have turned off). Everytime you go through an area your companion usually has something to say about it. Many, for the sith especially, are somewhat anti your side (which as a sith makes it fun to slap the companion).

The big one are the flashpoints. These are incredible. Usually things are always happening, very active and interesting and keeping you on your toes. Extra objectives are worked in very well and usually seem like real targets of opportunity (ohh I bet it would hurt them if I destroy these computer systems on this ship I am infiltrating why don't I do that?). You also get extra stuff for grouping that is very well done as far as I can tell.

I really don't understand the hate the game is getting from many quarters, the fact it has story and quests that matter alone make it light years better than most if not all mmo's on the market. As soon as I have time and money for it I will be getting this one.

very very untrue. This corrects many of the problems with MMO's by making them like single player rpg's, and the story in the dragon age games (which is really the only thing about them that matters) is still incredible.

Hey Bioware, 2005 called. They want their MMORPG-formula back.

This game looks so pathetic and bad, i can't even understand how this game got released as a full price MMO with monthly fees. Thank god we got GW2 in the pipeline to save the genre.

Posted by gesi1223

@Criamos: I don't think the MMO genre could ever be saved.

The more reviews of this game come out, the more I appreciate Giantbomb for showing us a raw view of what this game really plays like and more or less letting us judge for ourselves. Perhaps it is pretty biased and not really raw, but either way, it does show a real gameplay experience.

Posted by Barrock

Some of the comments are laughable. Anyway I'm really enjoying the game and I'm up to level 23 on my Smuggler. Can't wait to go back home and play it some more.

Posted by welshguy

Began following the development of this game a few years ago now. Then as more and more info about the game got released, I got more and more disenchanted. But I still followed every friday update, checked out the forums etc. I was lucky to get a beta invite and so had first hand experience with the game and I found it meh. Just meh. Its not awful, its not briliant. I felt it very, very average. The graphics are substandard yes but that means more people can play it without having to shell out piss loads for computer upgrades. I found the voice acting rather awful to be honest (an issue I have with most bio-ware games). The story line missions for my class (Inquisitor) were rather compelling yet ruined as soon as I encountered DarfMawl95 running around with the exact same companion in the sith academy. Then another sith inquisitor with the same companion, then another, and another...

Despite all this, I still sort of want to play it. Not for the multiplayer element because honestly, I hate having to rely upon other people to play content. But the story line for the Inquisitor, and maybe the Warrior, damn it I would like to play through just for that. I may end up just buying the damn thing and playing through it as a single player experience. Yes I'm missing out on so much content that seems silly, but I honestly don't have the time to spend "looking for group" to do a mission, or worry about doing a sodding raid and have people not turn up or drop out mid fight. I play other mmo's (city of heroes for years now, and star trek since launch) and I will put up with the mmo crap from them because I enjoy them so much. The Old Republic, why could you not have been a single player? That would have made me, and it seems a lot of others, very happy.

Have you played Shadows of the Empire recently? Almost everything about these on-foot sequences sucks. Especially the camera. I´m sorry but that game is probably the worst example to bring up for good third person gameplay. If you want to stay within the Star Wars universe, why not take Jedi Knight or Jedi Outcast?

Holy fuck haters gonna hate.

I played the World of Warcraft beta and could never get into it.  I played the SWTOR beta and was instantly hooked.  I'm an Imperial Agent and I've probably put about 50 hours into it this week alone.  It's super fun, and definitely feels a lot like a KoTOR style game set in a multiplayer world.  It cannot be overstated how much the story-telling and voice acting moves things along, which is why I became bored with WoW at level 23.

Everyone needs to just fucking chill, especially the people like @Sears who are angry for no reason at all.  This game is obviously not for you, move along.

Posted by Nentisys

I just don't see why this is an MMO. Granted, what I played in beta or talking to some of my friends who bought this, never showcased grouping or pvp.

This is not the game I was looking for.

I really hate the phrase "this is an MMO" because it pigeonholes the genre into a stat-based RPG formula with oversized hallways and hollow quests. I really wish twitch-based MMOs like Jumpgate were given a second chance because they rely more on reflex skill than punching the 1234 keys in the same sequence.

Thanks for this Quick Look, so far it looks amazing, but I have to get a gaming computer so I can revel in its full glory.

That's one facet of "Dopamine Injection Kit" MMOs taking control of the industry: deviations from the norm are stuck being small and largely the domain of those seeking exactly that gameplay.
Posted by warmonked

One thing I've never liked about MMOs are that everything is a weird large open area. Always ruined the atmosphere for me.

The space combat sure looked pretty. Boring as hell, but pretty.
