@Jeff: See what we need in the new Giantbomb site is a personal "hellban" button for each user. That way I can slowly weed out all the annoying little kids (and adults that act like kids) and even though they'll still be whining, I'll have a Giantbomb free from ignorance and hate. That's the Giantbomb I envision in the future.

On the subject of this Patrick stuff, man, it's really sad. It's so unrelenting, this hatred of him, that I'm starting to expect some sort of bizarre motive. What are you all trying to accomplish, make him feel so shitty that he eventually decides to leave the site? I'd like to think that I don't put a lot of stock into Internet commenters, but if I were in Patrick's shoes, this nonsense would be really difficult to handle. It's one thing to be constructively criticized—it's nice to look into oneself in that sort of manner. To be repeatedly insulted for no good reason every time you show your face, it can't be easy. This sick hive mentality shit is pretty disgusting. You all need some to do some deep self-reflection.

Can't wait for this game. Hope it sells well, giving Swery something to build on with a sequel/prequel to Deadly Premonition.

@Fobwashed: Definately watch the rest of the series. I almost didn't do watch it from all the hate it got, but it's actually pretty good. It drags a little bit midway through the season, but all of it leads up to a fucking fantastic finale! It would have been a much better season if they edited many of the pointless sub-plots out, and had Lynch and Frost been writing it again. But even then it's still awesome. The final two episodes are definately worth trudging through the mediocre subplots!

Nah, I'd say most. I rarely comment, but I also dislike Patrick. Too much of a hipster. Also, his interview questions sucked. Boring and generic.

The word hipster should be banned. People are just throwing it around with reckless abandon these days. Also I'd say you're wrong, I'd say the majority of people are fucking over the fact that Patrick joined the site.

I don't like him either - I just find him annoying - but I usually shut up about it since I'm still giving them money. At least he's not in everything (though recent videos say otherwise), although he did get into this Swery video which is great since Patrick had so much to do with the Deadly Premonition ER. At this point I kinda feel like Giantbomb is just using Patrick to troll the fans that can't stand the guy, and I guess you have to give them props for that?

@Jeff said:

Congratulations to the people complaining about the only guy on staff who spoke up and said "yeah, sure, let's interview Swery while he's in town." You're all Grade A truth-tellers who totally get us as people, man.

right, that's the measured and reasonable conclusion to draw. it's not like he's been staff for nearly 2 years now and is producing content that otherwise wouldn't get made. or doing the job he's paid to do. that would be INSANE.

Yes, please. In the videos that don't spell out who's on it I have to go to comments to find out if it's watchable and sometimes it's whole pages before someone mentions Klepek.

I just finished watching the first season of Twin Peaks, and what a ridiculous cliff hanger ending. It makes me sad that everything I've heard about Season 2 has been ho-hum.

I think a lot of the negative reception of the second season has to do with people getting kind of miffed that it starts straying pretty heavily away from the 'crime drama' genre. I mean, it was always Lynchian, but it was also pretty accessible. Once it started really flaunting its esoteric nature was when people started dropping. Yeah, it gets pretty convoluted, but that doesn't bother me much. The second season is great and contains one of my all-time favorite scenes in TV history. I wouldn't listen to what you've heard from people.

I love the look on Patrick's face at 01:45

"I have to act like I understand a word this man is saying! Oh crap, maybe I should just nod right now? Yeah, that sounds good"

To be fair, Vinny/Drew might have spliced the footage together and gotten Patrick and Ryan's reactions to what the translator was saying at the time.

That being said, I often wonder what the proper etiquette is those situations. Do you honestly just sit there and nod your head randomly to a person speaking a language you don't understand? I suppose you can't just stare off into space like an a hole. It would be hilarious if Swery was ripping into Patrick in japanese, and Patrick was just sitting there nodding along.

In most cases they respond and react to the translator and in post the translator is edited out so it looks like they react to the person speaking in a foreign language, usually in television they don't dub and looks like the other is capable of understanding every word the foreigner speaks. But no idea how GB worked this interview.

Swell interview. I attempted to transcribe it for those having a hard time. There may be some mistakes, and there were a couple words I couldn't make out after several minutes, but the gist is there. Read along with the video.

RYAN: What is it that you wanted to accomplish with the director's cut?

SWERY: He released the original version of Deadly Premonition only for Xbox 360. But it was a pity that he could not deliver this fantastic game to PS3 owners. This time he had a chance from the producer to bring this game newly to the PS3 owners. He was so happy to have that kind of chance.

PATRICK: When you were thinking about what to put into the director's cut, how much of it was what you wanted to put into it, and how much of it was listening to fans and what you could address based on what they had played in the Xbox 360 version?

S: First of all, he didn't want to make a big change from the original version, but after the release of the 360 version, after feedback from the western market, some of them were very positive, from the core fans, and some of them were kind of negative comments. For example, graphics is not so good, or something like that. So first of all, he wanted to improve such kind of points when he decided to bring this director's cut. He decided to fix the controls because so many fans were complaining about it. So he decided after listening to the voices from the fans.

R: Were there any story or character elements that didn't make the 360 version that you wanted to incorporate that made it into the director's cut?

S: Also he decided to add a new scenario. In this new scenario, he brought a completely new character. But he didn't want to destroy the main story or the main original gameplay, so he decided to add the new story as a little cutscene. He decided to insert those cutscenes throughout the game. For those core fans who played the original version, they will be able to get a kind of a new translation after they watch the new scenario, because he added a new ending as well.

P: You have been very active on Twitter, Instagram, you interact with your fans a lot. What do you get out of that? Why do you like interacting with your fans so often? You seem to be one of the few Japanese developers that really dives in head first to talk to all of your fans on Twitter.

S: He likes to be close to the fans because sometimes he can recognize what is good, what is bad. He received a comment like, "I don't like the QTE of Deadly Premonition," so this time he decided to fix the QTE scenes so that the player can much more easily clear this game.

R:You've been living with Agent York and these characters and this world for a really long time now. Deadly Premonition in its various incarnations has been around for a while. Do you have any ideas moving forward in this universe, or after this are you looking to break completely from Deadly Premonition and jump into something new?

S: Of course he is thinking of various things. Maybe getting back to the (indistinct) or something, or jumping into the new titles. But at the moment he's thinking that everybody's pushing him to bring York to the next game. He is kind of enthusiastic to come back to the Deadly Premonition world. He'd like to get the chance to do that.

P: I'm curious when you go around the world talking to different Deadly Premonition fans, do you get a different reaction from different fans around the world where they like certain things or want to talk to you about certain things more than others? When you go around the world talking to fans, what do you hear from people?

S: There are so many fans who is loving Deadly Premonition. Some of them say, "Please don't change anything, even if it was very bad, some kind of controls or graphics, because it is kind of a charming point of Deadly Premonition. And of course, he is so pleased to hear such kind of comments as well, but it's been two years now. He is kind of grown. He is now thinking that he has to change or improve Deadly Premonition. Some of the fans may complain about it, but he'd like to say, "Trust me. This is SWERY's game as well."

P:What has been your biggest takeaway from this whole experience. I know making that game took a number of years. It was shown at TGS, then you showed it again several years later, and it was a big surprise to a lot of people. Having gone through this whole experience, and now you're going through it again, what's been your biggest takeaway from this as you move forward.

S: He had so many issues during the development. This game was going to be canceled four times. But after those troubles, he finally reached to the release date. He can remember the day this game was out. That was so impressive day.

This game will be available the last week of April in North America.

Swery! Yes!
I'm glad to see more of Swery, he seems like such a cool & interesting guy.

Here's hoping the Deadly Premonition Director's Cut will sell well enough for him to keep making games.  I still remember about a year ago when he was begging people to fund his new project... let's hope he doesn't get in that dire of straights again.
I'm still hoping for a Deadly Premonition 2.

I rarely comment or do much on Giant Bomb other than consume content, so let me be part of the silent majority and say: Patrick is great. I respect the hell out of him as a journalist; you don't work for most of the big sites and then transfer over to Giant Bomb unless you absolutely love this medium. I think he has consistently interesting things to say on podcasts and in videos, and I've loved his previous work for 1UP and G4.

And he has cool shoes.

He may feel like "the new guy" or the "annoying hipster" to some of you, but despite his age and your biases based on his appearance, there are many, many good reasons why he was hired by Giant Bomb and why he isn't going anywhere. If you really do respect and admire the rest of the staff, why question their judgment?

Now where the fuck is the next Jurassic Lark video?!

I totally agree with you.

I used to remember when the comments sections were about the games they were referencing, not the staff reporting on them, its getting really boring to read now. Ugh, Deadly Premonition is a bad game. I get it. This running joke stopped being funny after the third ER episode.

Gameplay wise sure, but the characters and dialog were great in my opinion. Sure the awkwardness of it all added to that in an unintentional way, but I can safely say i've played a lot worse.

People praised Nier for having great characters and dialog but that game looked and played like crap. (the art design and music were great though) Point being you can overlook a lot of flaws if something (game, movie, whatever) excels in a certain area.

No, but I've been requesting it for years. If this site had a block list, it would be a hundred times more usable. Then we could finally just block the fucking insufferable man-children that complain about everything, and have actual discussions. Then again, mods could actually do something about it, other than just make idle threats.

actually i think 'most' people would rather see the people that complain about patrick on every single thread just fuck off. he is not going ANYWHERE.

i saw a live feed recently and the comments that people were posting about patrick were just nasty and spiteful and the kind of comments i would of expected to of heard on a school playground.

Hey, I'm not saying I understand it, I'm just saying where there's smoke, there's fire. Guy is massively disliked.

This is well done, a little shorter than I would like, but good nonetheless. Having translation coming in one ear and the original language the other seems pretty tough.

As a Japanese translator and occasional interpreter myself, simultaneous input and output is a desirable and often necessary skill depending on the setting. It was probably a little overboard for such a casual interview like this, but in business meetings and conferences where timing is of the essence and stopping to do interpretation every sentence or so would take up too much time, it's basically a must. I haven't yet been hired to do that sort of gig myself yet, but I always admire guys who can do it, even if the output is a bit grammatically wishy-washy like it was here.

Dope! Swery seems like such an interesting and humble guy, and I'm happy to see someone like him making videogames. I also think its nice that this isnt just a patch/DLC because it leaves players who enjoyed the charm of the first DP to keep playing that game and then this new version can bring in the crowd who didn't get into it the first time around.

Congratulations to the people complaining about the only guy on staff who spoke up and said "yeah, sure, let's interview Swery while he's in town." You're all Grade A truth-tellers who totally get us as people, man.

This makes me sad that Jeff had to come in here and say this. I hope all the people whining like 5 years old are embarrassed that Jeff had to scold you like children. Have some class, I come to GB to get away from all the whining 13 year olds acting like entitled pieces of shit. Patrick is cool and brings a fresh look to a lot of aspects of GB and if you simple minded idiots can not deal with change get out and go to Kotaku and pollute their site. Ugh, I am done my food is getting cold.

The question isn't if I will buy DP on the PS3. The question is. How many copies I will buy.

Edit: Maybe because I've lived abroad for so many years. But I had no problem understanding the translator.

I'm not sure if anybody's really that desperate to go through 11 pages of comments to find a transcription, but here's what I came up with anyway. Fixed some of the grammer out of habit, but most of it should be word for word.

Answer 1: After the release of the original version of Deadly Premonition only for Xbox 360, but it was a pity that he couldn't bring this fantastic game to the PS3 owners. So this time he had a chance from the producer to bring this game to the PS3 owners so he was so happy to have such a chance.

Answer 2: First of all, he didn't want to make a big change from the original version, but after the release of the 360 version, he received feedback from the western market, some of them were very positive from the core fronts, some of them had kind've negative comments because the graphics were not so good or some things like that. So first off, he wanted to improve on those points and he decided to bring out this director's cut. He decided to fix the controls because so many fans were complaining about it, so he decided after listening to the voices from the fans.

Answer 3: Also he decided to add this new scenario. In this new scenario, he brought a completely new character. But he didn't want to destroy the main story, the main original gameplay, so he decided to add the new story as a lot of new cutscenes, so he decided to insert the new cutscenes throughout the games. For those core fans who played the original version, they will be able to get a kind of new translation (interpretation?) after they watch the new scenarios because he added a new ending as well.

Answer 4: It's correct to be cross to the fans because sometimes he can't recognize what is good or what is bad. He received comments like "I don't like the QTEs in premonition," this time he decided to fix those QTE scenes so that the player can much more easily clear this game.

Answer 5: Of course he's thinking of various things, maybe getting back to the CKers (seekers?) or something, and jumping into the new titles, but at the moment he feels as though everyone is pushing him to bring York to the next game. Yes, he's enthusiastic to come back to the Deadly Premonition world, but he'd like to get a chance to do that.

Answer 6: There are so many fans who is loving Deadly Premonition, some of them saying "please don't change anything, even if it was very bad like some kind of control or graphics, because it is kind of a charming point of Deadly Premonition." And of course he is so pleased to hear such kind of comment as well, but it's been two years now, he's kind've grown, and is now thinking that he has to change or improve this Deadly Premonition. Some of the fans may complain about it, but he's the director and it's his game as well. (Second half of that sentence may be wildly inaccurate.) Trust me.

Answer 7: He had so many issues during the development. This game was going to be cancelled four times. But after those troubles, he finally reached to the release date. He can remember the day this game came out; that was so impressive day. He's saying so.

Closing statement: This game will be available in the last week of April in North America. Thank you.

Just found this after posting, thanks buddy :)

@Heimdal: I don't know. Seems nearly all the stories Patrick puts up become a place to post that others dislike Patrick so much. It's really tiring and I'm beginning to dislike the community because of it. Giantbomb used to make me glad to be a gamer and I enjoyed visiting the site, but the cynicism around him really is too much.

>"Most"

You mean loudest. Vocal minorities gonna bitch, doesn't mean everyone is on your side.

Nah, I'd say most. I rarely comment, but I also dislike Patrick. Too much of a hipster. Also, his interview questions sucked. Boring and generic.
