The Best PS1 Final Fantasy Game Headed to Steam

Final Fantasy VIII is what you get if you mix Degrassi with a JRPG.

And even if you're just looking for mainline, numbered Final Fantasies, 9 is better than 8.

I remember liking VIII when I played it. I still remember it somewhat fondly, but I also watched this recently..

..and he's right. I don't know why I liked most FF characters. I've since determined that it must have been due the blissful ignorance of youth.

I still have a PS1 copy of this game and the other numbered FF's as well as a backwards compatible PS3 to play it on should I so desire. Even if I didn't I could always download it on PSN. Feels kind of wrong to play a classic like this without a Playstation controller in my hands. I don't know if I'd call FFVIII the best of the PS1 era but it's probably my favorite of those 3 games. If you want to tell me Tactics is the best PS1 Final Fantasy game, then sure.

I played VIII way too much, to the point of doing a no-level run and an honest try at a no-junction run. My favorite FF game when it comes to mechanics.

I can add this to my collection of FF games I still want to play!

I still want to know a release date for that HD Final Fantasy X. I really, really, really liked that game and I still do. I replay it about once every two-ish years. Defeat all the Dark Aeons and Penance each time and do it all over again a couple years later. I still like doing it as much as when I first played that game.

Tactics was literally "collect a bunch of things and beat the ancient evil." Advance was way more involved and self aware.

If 13 is equal to anything its FF6, not 8. Same exact protagonist. And I would place 13 way above 6 just for its great battle system alone.

But that's not Final Fantasy IX...

However, the draw and spell linking system is absolute trash and there's a reason it appears in only 1 FF game.

@believer258: For breaking the game you should read up on the systems a little. It's counter-intuitive in that you don't want to level up in the classical sense (just the abilities of your summons)

Honestly, I agree that VIII was the best on the PS1. As far as battle/magic systems go though, it was definitely the worst on the PS1. The music and story made it up for me though. Don't get me wrong though, VIII and VII are so close that they are equal in my mind, but if I had to choose it would be VIII, because I liked the story and music more.

This is not Final Fantasy Tactics.

Well, I was asking because I'd rather not purposefully just go break the game. I'd rather explore their ideas for more than an hour at least, but if all of that becomes useless because breaking the game is easy and obvious, then I'd rather not play it.

Well, aside from the fact that collection of Zodiac crystals entered into the story a good way in, I'm not sure how you can say Advanced had self awareness with a straight face.

I haven't played any of these FF's, I own 5-12 for the sake of finding out but haven't gotten round to them.

This isn't inspiring me to get on the train to crazy town.

8 had a great story and horrible, easy to exploit, systems.

Oh shit, that's right ! Well, I'm in the process of playing through FF7 after having bought it during the sale, probably gonna end up buying this. I mean why the heck not, I remember enjoying it as a kid. Bummer is that since this looks like a simple dump of the original game on PC, like FF7 seems to be, it probably means no FF9. That sucks ass :'(

VII is my favorite, but VIII is a close second.

The best Final Fantasy for PS1? Strange. This doesn't look like Final Fantasy 9 or Tactics, both exceedingly better then 8, to me.

Aura isn't on there either, which is the key to becoming relentless killing machine in that game. Seriously if you're casting magic at the back half of that game that isn't Aura you're doing it wrong :P
