Original Red Faction was fantastic, recall it fondly. Wasn't a fan of the sequel though.

I love how they past over Red Faction 2 dead quick. That was the most disappointing sequel I have ever played and I couldn't believe they screw up so bad after how brilliant the first game was.

Actually, the main story was pretty good in my opinion, the "new, upgraded" geo-mod engine was really disappointing though - where you could dig tunnels in RF1, you could at most blow up a statue or telephone pole in RF2. And then the PC port was a complete joke - where the console versions at least had decent Quake 3-esque split screen multi-player, the PC version only had deathmatch against bots, no online or even network option at all, despite RF1 having a complete and beloved multi-player experience that is still being played by a hundred or so people on the PC to this day.

Not sure why, but I find it rather disconcerting to hear a developer use the term "fanboys" to describe users of their product.

I can't remember the story at all, yeah I don't know what happened to geo-mod and the only fun maps in multi were the ones they copied over from the first game. Really left a bad taste in my mouth as you can probably tell XD

I'm glad the first one is still supported as that game had something special that I haven't seen replicated in further instalments of the franchise.

I admire the Red faction series because of how they change things up between each one. However despite what most people say Red Faction 2 was great. The story was more interesting and the campaign was ten times more entertaining than the first game. Red Faction 1 was a really bland shooter with a dull story and the Geo Mod stuff was so limited it may as well not been there. It was put to better and more focused use in the sequel, which also had great multi-player.

Yeah, RF2, Guerrilla and Armageddon all seem to emphasize that you can blow buildings up, the first Red Faction let you blow the ENVIRONMENT up (except for in half the campaign where for some reason all the walls were indestructible). It's pretty disappointing how nothing you do in the games actually impacts the look of the hills or anything like that, like it did in RF1. I must say I did like the new RF2 mp maps more than the imported RF1 ones, since the RF1 maps were extremely disappointing when you couldn't dig deep tunnels anymore. The entire point of the Warlords map was lost when you couldn't do anything but blow up the concrete bunkers on the edges.

Warlords, that was the one map I loved the hell out of back in the day and yes it suffered a lot with the new geo-mod engine. I remember my mate and I looking at each when we discovered this and just put RF1 in instead XD

The first game kind of had that Half Life vibe of a world you could discover and a story that went along with that universe. I feel those two things have taken a back seat to the new geo-mod engine and weapons in this generation of Red Faction games. Geo-mod and weapons complimented the story and universe perfectly in RF1 and now the franchise just relies on blowing things up in a sandbox. A sandbox I have no interest in being in because they haven't sold me on any other aspect of the game.

This reminds me, sometime in the near future, Giant Bomb should totally do a TNT of the original Red Faction for PC. Maybe complemented with a little Guerrilla online for the console owners, since the PS2 version of RF1 didn't have online multiplayer.

@Deathpooky: Well I am pretty sure that is how the first one was so......why you still paying attention to Red Faction?Plus aliens seem like a more fun enemy. They differ in fighting styles and give more variety than the generic human of fireing and taking cover(ala thousands of games.)Plus aliens are different in most games thanks to creativity and imagination.

If you actually play Half-Life 2, you'll discover that the Gravity Gun is very little like the Magnet Gun. The former picks a single item up and allows you to move it about the environment before dropping it or shooting it off straight forward. The latter allows you to cause any item (or group of items) in the environment to go flying through the air to collide with another item or group of items. So yes, they're both physics tools, but no, they're not at all the same weapon.

Only destruction game in town... I would actually put Battlefield BC1 and 2 on the same list. Though they are in a smaller scale and they don't promote it as the main selling point, its still the same type of destruktion and the destruktion feels better in BF:BC. RF:G felt like you were knocking down shit that was berely standing as it is.

BTW, I'm not bashing the RF games. Infact the first RF game is one of my all time favorite FPSs and Armageddon looks like it will be better then Guerilla, more focused.

Sadly when you have too much destruction going on, it feels less and less rewarding.
From what they showed in earlier videos everything feels like it is made out of cardboard, destruction just seems way too easy and trivial now, buildings being completely of no consequence. The repair function makes it doubly so. :(

The first Red Faction was great, but RF2 was kinda dreadful. The shooting in Guerrilla was terrible (on the PC version anyway) and the overall game was just so boring and repetitive that it was one of the few games I actually couldn't bother myself to finish.
So yeah, out of respect for the first RF, I really wish this will be good and that it will feature some actual good shooting mechanics and a more linear story with more varied missions. That could actually make it a great game, but I don't really know what to think of it... yet.

Haven't played RF1 or 2, but currently playing RF:Guerilla and really loving it. Unfortunately, this new RF seems to place more focus on shooting bad guys (based on the trailers, at least) and I really am not interested in bald space marine action.

"You fire a rocket at that wall, it shouldn't just turn black - there should be a hole in that wall and it should go through that wall and blow something up on the other side of that wall."

God. Damnit. Sold.

Well, it was sold practically since it was announced, just insanely reinforced in that Quick Look EX thingy, and then cemented with "Magnet Gun, and yes, it has infinite ammo". I might have to go back to Guerilla and hammer some dudes in the face soon.

Guerrilla is one of my top favourites the last few years, and this one does nothing for me. Linear, underground and with aliens. Three pretty much exact opposites of why I loved Guerrilla.
