Something about the voice seems off. I'm not trying to nitpick but I remember Max's voice having a different tone. It sounds like someone trying to emulate the voice.

I know the same voice actor is returning.

Also the setting just doesn't work for me. I dunno.

Here's the dirty little secret nobody wants to acknowledge.

Max Payne 1 and 2? They're pretty bad.

They're one note shooters with stories that don't know if they want to play it straight or for laughs, feel overwritten and awkward and just don't pay off.

They were also amazing games that debuted a number of things that would end up becoming shooter clichés, but the truth is they don't hold up at all. This? This looks... interesting.

I played Max Payne 1 and 2 when they came out and just recently, played them both one after another.

In my opinion, both games are still are amazing and there is NO game like Max Payne that captures the NY dirt so well with its atmosphere and story. I wouldnt be surprised if MP3 doesnt have any nightmare sequences, a reference that Max is in a computer game or none of the random ass TV shows. And guess fucking what, your opinion is not a fact, Internet man.

One last thing... go watch Double Indemnity (I'll bet most of you haven't ever even seen it)... yes, it's in black and white, but that's not the point. A LOT of that movie is set during the day in LA. Not a town known for its lack of sun.

The point of Noir is NOT: B/W (besides, too many people tell me that they can't watch old movies because B/W "Hurts their eyes." <what does that even MEAN?>), Night, Rain, Snow or NYC. No. Noir is story.

(edit - yesh, you'd think I would put the last letters on words and get apostrophes right, but nooooo...)

It´s Rockstar and it´s Max Payne and I think this game will be awesome. The trailer shows nearly nothing so I won´t judge it but let´s just say that I trust these guys.

Given Rockstar's pedigree for making good games i'm willing to put trust into them for now.

Glad to hear the voice actor again, and less depressing than he was in mp2.

@OldGuy: I was talking about the city, dude. I pretty much said that if you're going to do a noir-style game in SA, might as well do it São Paulo (Tough I guess Rio can be pretty gritty, too. Ever watch Elite Squad?).

After watching the trailer, I have decided that either the trailer or the game are good. I won't know which until the game is out.

Clever trying to fool me that everything's gonna be all right by using that music. But unfortunately no music could have made that look or sound like the Max Payne game I want. And the voice, oh my God the voice - so wrong!

As a stand alone thing it look fine though. Could be a good game, just not the right game.

It's still James McCaffrey, dude.

I really despise gamers.

Throwing tantrums over a fucking haircut? Can we at least wait for the game to come out before we start calling it shit?

I need to find a new hobbie. One where the fans aren't bratty children. Stamp collecting, perhaps?

Max Payne (2001 - March 2012)

Beloved by many gamers. Revolutionary at the time of release. One of the best narratives in gaming.

R.I.P.

You have to got to be kidding me. If this is one of the best stories in gaming, then fuck video games.

What carried Max Payne was the shooting mechanics and atmosphere. The story was a ridiculous mess of conspiracy theory nonsense. Read a book from time to time .

i guess this is their way of appealing to the white-trash demographic. also, whoever thought the idea of changing the setting from the city to a favela, like it was even interchangeable to begin with, needs to be shot.

Thanks.

Seriously, fucking thanks. Hell, a lot of people fail to notice that The Big Lebowski is a pretty straight up noir movie. Or that LA-based noir very rarely resorted to urban environments or nighttime.

Noir as a genre is about two things: class warfare and sex.

Neither is anyone else's, but I like to think I do a good job of explaining mine and backing it up with the rationale behind it when needed.

I'm very much aware of the meta elements and the tongue in cheek sequences in Max Payne, but I always had the feeling that they were mostly meant as a cheap way out of the fact that they couldn't quite pull it off straight. Alan Wake did nothing to prove me wrong on that one, although it was still better than Max Payne in my book.

But honestly, no other game captures NY grit that well? Really? Both Payne games are as exaggerated as it gets. Compared to them GTA 3 and 4 are cinema verite. Oh, well, not saying that your opinion isn't valid or that it's not shared by many others, I just can't see how it stands. The flaws of those games were obvious to me when they came out and they've only gotten worse with time.

Look James McCaffrey is donig the voice and all Max Payne motion capture. That's very good. This game's engine as many others have said by now is good. THe only thing that they can mess up is the story/atmosphere that a Max Payne game should have. Would I love for Max Payne 3 to be made by Remedy? Yea. Its not happening. Look forward to your Max-Wake Mash up extravaganza in the future maybe (Sam Lake has hinted about a crossover in the past). Give it a shot. I don't exactly like what I see but you gotta remember the trailer is to hook in people that dont know who max payne is and havent played it ever. The music and voice over is for the Max Payne fans. So sit and relax. It's very unlikely that every franchise you hold dear will eventually be butchered and sold to the masses.

Max Payne needed a shake-up to stay relavent. I really like that they had the balls to change the design and setting. I hope it isn't open-world, though. Max Payne needs a tight, tight narrative and Rockstar is who I trust to deliver.

Nah. It's all about the honest working man taking assignments from the corrupt rich person and being tempted by the immorality of the environment, ultimately having to make a choice between giving in to the temptation (the woman, the money or whatever) or walking away and getting nothing. Sometimes the movie goes one way, sometimes the other. Sometimes he gives in and is punished for it. But check it against noir films, the template totally fits.

While we're at it, my favourite straight up noir film ever? The Big Sleep.

So no, I don't think MP3 has lost the "noir". In fact, given the premise, it seems to be the first Max Payne game ever to actually be noir. The first two were revenge thrillers, which is not the same thing.

Oh my goood, hearing those strings and James McCaffrey's voice again gave me chills. I loved this series so much and am hoping against hope that a non-Remedy developer can make a good game out of it.

And yeah - serious Kane & Lynch 2 vibes from the whole thing, especially the logo treatment. K&L2 had a pretty great style, though, so I'm down.

THIS. More absurd lines about darkness and street lights needed asap.

I like that trailer a lot though. While this doesn't look exactly like the first two games, in the sense that this isn't trying to be some hyper-ecentric NY film noir cop movie, it does seem like it is following the overall sense of those games well. It still seems like the focus is on Max dealing with the tragedy around him. Max leaving the city makes complete sense after 2 (the "bad" ending anyway) and I really like the shaved head thing now (gives a great Taxi Driver vibe). The entire trailer have me hope that this could be a really great ex-cop story.

LOL at fanboys who are "experts" at noir after playing a couple of fucking video games. Noir isn't a color palette nor is it only NYC.

Do we really need another NYC setting? No, that's more played out than a fps with US military. Sao Paulo makes NYC look like Disneyland. This game is going to be grimey.

It looks like Max Payne and those calling it a GTA clone are idiots. Remember, Remedy sold off the rights to the IP and the sequel came out 8 years ago. If you want to blame anyone for the supposed terribleness, blame Remedy. Also, go ahead and completely disregard Rockstar having a hand in both of the previous games. I think it looks great and I'm very excited for it.

I'm guessing none of you played Alan Wake? It took Remedy 5 years to churn out a very mediocre game.
