Vision Gran Turismo is not the first foray of concept cars in the Gran Turismo series. Not only has famous concept cars appeared in the series, many of them had been in fact created in partnership with the video game developper. The first example is the Nike ONE, appearing exclusively in Gran Turismo 4. This was followed by the GT by Citroën and the Red Bull X2010, first featured in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Gran Turismo 5 respectively.
The Vision Gran Turismo program was announced in 2013 in the lead-up to the release of Gran Turismo 6, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the video game franchise. While only one VGT car was available in the game at launch, the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo, many more were released through game updates and subsequent game releases.
Starting with Gran Turismo Sport, race-regulated variants were introduced.
