Space Marine - Demo Impressions
I'll start off by saying I liked it but without fighting real enemies (Chaos) I'm not 100% on board yet. Orks got a little bit stale, the fighting system is simple & effective though.
well... i fucking LOVED the demo. Of course, let me state right off the bat, im fucking biased to hell, since the 40k universe is one of my favorite things... ever, and ill play pretty much anythign that has 40k in its title.
With that said, lets see. 60fps maxed out, looks fine for the amount of enemies on screen but wont blow anyone away (some ugly low res textures too which u can spot on the various videos so i was expecting it). Sound is amazing, from the crunched orks, to the chainsword, to the stomps on the ground. Gameplay feels basically like a melee Gears. The kill shit to get health back mechanic makes the game, its not as simple as it sounded (to me) because you only get health back after a brutal kill (which you get by pressing B after you stun a enemy), but you only get the health back at the END of the animation, and while its going you are NOT invulnerable. And you take a lot of damage (at least on normal), so you can't just mash your way into 30 orks and chain brutal kills... you can sometimes, but at times you need to back off, pop some with guns, try to get some isolated to stun and brutal kill, etc.
Also, jump packs feel amazing and i wish the whole game was like that (which would be impossible I know). Jump pack marines were my favorite units in the RTS games, and here it feels just like you would imagine in a 3d setting. You jump up in the air (you cant fly around) and while up there you have 2 or 3 secs where you hover and you can aim (you see a reticle on the ground) where to land by pressing B and go crashing down on enemies... feels amazing.
So yeah, like Darksiders (which this game is using the engine of) was my sleeper of 2009, this is easily my sleeper of 2011. Cant wait for the full game, i hope its not too short :( Any questions about the demo feel free to ask.
Aw man. I got super excited until I realized this was only for PC. I'll get back to you in a few days...sigh.
I can't thank Relic enough for not raping the franchise. They do stellar things over and over, and bringing 40k in a highly detailed game like this just makes me happy all over. Just the detail on the Space Marines is outstanding, the look of the Forge World is incredible. The sounds and feel of the weapons are perfect. It's just like they took not only the Rulebook but the different Codex and just used those descriptions to build this game. It's definitely a game for 40k lore snobs, fanboys and anyone with a fleeting interest in the universe.
On a purely gameplay standpoint, I'd say it's up there with the other good Third-Person Shooters, maybe one of the best. I'm saving that judgement until I get my filthy mits on the full product, but I'm loving how this plays. Going fluidly from Ranged to Melee combat feels right, and once you get the execution system down, you'll be stomping Orks left and right.
I really don't know what else to say about this, but even trying the demo on PC converted me from a "Probably gonna pick it up on the 360" to "Where's the money so I can buy the collector's edition on PC?" Just staring at my unpainted Blood Angels is getting me pumped for making my own multiplayer Space Marine.
I love this demo.
TB made a video, looking pretty awesome:Aw man. I got super excited until I realized this was only for PC. I'll get back to you in a few days...sigh.
@SlasherMan:
I had to stop myself from watching it a few minutes in. I don't wanna spoil the demo for myself. I realize that makes zero sense but...that's just how i do.
The audio for this game, going off of what I've seen anyway, seems amazing. Those bolters sound mean.
Combat is great fun, nothing at all like Gears. At the end when you get the Power Axe, full fury and dozens of enemies surrounding you...well I've not had that much fun in ages.

Where do you get the power axe?
Been through the demo 2 times now both missions, never saw it.
@Tennmuerti: At the very end of the first mission when you are waiting for the lift there is a drop pod on the left as you're facing the lift and it's in there.
I can now speak about this. I really like this demo. It's not a perfect game but I'm having a great time with it. The melee stuff is awesome, to the point where I was grumbling about not having a block button before I remembered it's a shooter. It's a little harder then I thought it would be which is cool. There's a few nitpicks, there doesn't seem to be a way to listen to the audio log you find if you don't listen to it immediately and the camera can get kinda wonky if you're close to a wall. Really like it though, can't wait for the game.
I loved it. Relic continues to show they know what they're doing with the 40k universe. The movement has a nice weight to it, as you expect a space marine would, all without it feeling sluggish. The weapons are fun to shoot and sound amazing, the stalker pattern bolter makes me grin sadistically whenever I blow and ork to pieces with a round. Melee is satisfying and brutal, the executions against the nobs are by far my favorite. Can't wait to get my hands on the full game and see how the multiplayer is.

I second everything you say. It is really what every 40k fan wants in a third person game. The fluid transitions between ranged and melee, the sound of a bolter being just right, and the ridiculous melee kills against those vile greenskins are what has sold me on the game.
As a fan of Warhammer 40k for about a decade now:
Yes. YES. SO fucking glad I preordered the fancy collector's edition.
I played it on my Xbox and on the PC and I gotta say its a really fun demo. I now wanna see where the story goes. Relic has done well with story in the past Warhammer 40K games so hopefully they can do better here. Love the feel of the gameplay it feels weighty especially with you throwing around a ton of space marine. The sound is great the weapons the enemies the environment all sound great. The combat is loads of fun. It feels great to pop off a few bolter rounds at the advancing horde then instantly switch to the chainsword and just crash into the melee. All without pause. Pure undiluted fun.
It runs pretty well on my 3 year old PC. Granted the resolution wasn't the highest and it was aliased all to hell. It still ran smooth with the only noticeable slowdown being when I was driving a chainsword through an ork's gut and that's part of the design. Still gonna get the 360 version though for three very good reasons, 1) I know it will look better than on my PC, 2) I bought Kill Team so I get a power sword in the 360 version not in the PC version and 3) Achievement points. OK number 3 is a dumb reason but what the hell.
I thought it was fantastic.
It looks great on the PC, everything has a great scale to it, and the lighting is very nice. The controls are pretty simple, and they are very fluid, but that expected from a game on the Darksiders engine. And finally it was just a ton of fun. Taking on hords of oarks is very satisfying, and mixing all the different weapons to do so is just mindless fun.
My biggest complaint was they didn't tell you anything really. I didn't know you had other guns until about half way into the demo.
After playing both missions through again I'd actually bump my enthusiasm up a point, once you get the hang of the different stuns it's actually pretty interesting. Can't wait to see how that works for multiplayer
Honestly I found myself a bit disappointed. Not that there is anything wrong with the game, and I love me some 40K indulge, but frankly I found Space Marine to be kind of dull. Running around and killing endless mobs of Orks really doesn't appeal to me. I'm hoping the whole game has a lot more depth, because the demo completely rides on it being a 40K game and it would never get the same attention if that was removed.
Played on the xbox, enjoyed most of what I played. Controls where weird since i'v only really been playing halo reach lately. However an hour will get me ready. Hopefully we'll see some good lasting multiplayer!
Was really pumped for this game, but the demo left me.. unsure. Played it on medium, and it really didn't seem like I could take much of a beating at all. I get that they can't make you completely invincible etc, but I had some pretty expedient deaths in the Ork rush at the end of the normal level. The healing-mechanic doesn't really help too much either. Having to first stun an Ork then execute him just takes way too long, not to mention that even if you're at a good amount of health you can still get killed mid-execute if you get mobbed. Executions are cool and all, but the game really slows down to a crawl if you have to do them over and over and over. Also, the shield seems pretty useless.
Gonna end up buying it anyways though, hopefully it's just something you gotta get more used to.

you need to mix and match melee with shooting, just being melee all the time WILL get you killed more often than not, also using executions for health when you got 2 or 3 orks isolated, not in the middle of the horde, since you still take dmg during the animation
I just played the ps3 demo and my expectations weren't high, but it was much more fun than I expected. I could see it get very stale when playing for more than 60 minutes though. Executions were great but all of the violence is hidden behind blood mist, so you don't see a lot.
