Marines in spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

There will be multiplayer on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine's disc when the game comes out next week, but there won't be co-op.

Instead, that's coming to the game as free downloadable content sometime in October, the developer confirmed today.

This isn't a separate co-op campaign or anything, but a Horde-like, score-based four-player mode called Exterminatus. Players choose between three classes--Tactical Marine, Devastator, Assault Marinefight-- and fight through two different scenarios--Assault on Hab Center Andreas, Escape From Kalkys Facility--that both feature multiple maps to slog through.

It sounds pretty involved, actually.

You'll earn experience within Exterminatus that can be applied to the other multiplayer modes, too.

Co-Cop?  You mean buddy cop style?  Sweeeeet

#7 Posted by Giantstalker (1247 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I've heard there are NO executions in the co-op version of this mode, at least going from the Gamespot article on the same thing, which definitely seems like a bummer to me.

I'm still getting it for the singleplayer, though.

#8 Posted by Rodimus_Prime (2 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

That's a nice piece of news to hear. I have a few friend that will enjoy this mode.

#9 Posted by divxz (22 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Wasn't this supposed to be 5-player co-op?

#10 Posted by Dyram (145 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I was still holding out hope for a coop campaign, but I knew that realistically it would just come to a Horde mode. Again. Game still looks amazing, though, and my friends and I will be having plenty fun in SP and MP, both competitive, and cooperative when this comes out.

i am so buying this on pc who is with me?

#14 Posted by Wandrecanada (345 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

This game was originally marketed to me as co op campaign and now it's not? They're saying this now a week prior to release? I feel compelled to drop my pre order...

Why do developers have such a hard time with this concept? Do they not understand why a game like Borderlands was supported so heavily? Do they think that Halo was not incredibly popular because of co op campaign? Man alive what will it take for devs to realize that putting co op campaign in their original design doc and never deviating from it will score sales every damned time?

Sounds good, i'm still not too sure im 100% sold on this game just yet, though.

Man, Co-Cop is my favorite game mode. I like to play as the cop that has 2 days until retirement.

Loved the Steam demo. This is good news. I hope they continue adding new maps and stuff since it only comes with 2 game modes on release.

#18 Posted by shintsurugi (63 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Cuz I'm a stupid hardcore 40k fan, not terribly pleased with the name Exterminatus. Now, if this was a co-op mode where you just nuked everything from orbit, that would be appropriate. o.o

But again, I'm just a stupid hardcore 40k fan. Still really looking forward to Space Marine. =D

#19 Posted by spazmaster666 (1950 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

For some reason I'm still not sold on this game. I mean I'm a prime audience for it: I love the 40K universe, I played all the previous Relic DOW games and I like third person action games, but for some reason this game just isn't resonating with me. I even played the demo but it didn't change anything. Maybe when the game comes out and I see some more of the game's story it'll start to sink in more.

They probably just wanted to get the game on shelves in time for the holidays.

As long as it's free I don't mind. The Last Stand co-op mode for Dawn of War 2 was also released as a downloadable update.

I can't wait for the games that will consist of empty maps, and then comes the paid DLC which has the characters and AI and story

I don't know what this has to do with Space Marine, it's not like they are taking away content from the consumer.

#32 Posted by pweidman (1960 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Knew co-op was a month off DLC, but hearing it's a survival mode is awesome. Perfect game for that. Shame it wasn't ready for launch, because in a month it'll be all Gears pretty much for me. Still buying and playing it day one.

#33 Posted by mustardfacial (24 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

@Wandrecanada: It's because co-op campaigns are very difficult to make. And just because game x, y, and z have it doesn't make it any easier. It's often a choice between: make a good co-op campaign, make a good multiplayer, or make a stable game. You get to pick two.

#34 Posted by nukesniper (1301 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

Late addition, but it sounds cool. I like the Last Stand stuff in DoW2. Might eventually get Space Marine, and mainly for this. Sad it isn't there at launch.

#35 Posted by Sander (382 posts) - 1 year, 8 months ago

I don't know WTF is going on. The demo just came out and at the end of it says "4 player co-op campaign."

I agree, pretty much dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I'm not really all that interested in Space Marine for some reason. Also, was this poorly edited, or am I just crazy?

I like it because it shows that Relic and THQ aren't out to nickle and dime us - a lot of companies would have seen this as an opportunity to charge us an extra $10 or $15 for the content (or have had it sectioned off and planned as "premium content' long before the game's release). I won't pass judgement on Space Marine until we see what the post-release DLC plans are for that game, but this is a very good, very comforting and consumer friendly step in the right direction.

Well, to be fair, I saw that no one else had posted so I just typed down whatever came into my mind. You know, I wanted to get that stupid quest thing but I didn't want to post something like, "Cool", followed by "Edit: OMG I finally got it!" I see what you mean though.

Ok. Relic will the game by a month and ship the game in October so that this portion capable of being separated from the game is done being polished, and release the whole thing. That ok with you?
