If they're not setting hard and fast truths, that makes them malleable and open to feedback and change, and I guess that's what you guys are bitching about since you can't bitch about facts. So, Nintendo doesn't actually know anything about their new system and what it can do? Great.
Wii U
Platform »
The Nintendo Wii U, the follow-up to the monstrously popular Nintendo Wii console, launched in North America on November 18th 2012.
Here's Everything Nintendo Would Tell Me About Wii U
Well that was a helpful interview.
"Here's everything Nintendo would tell me about the Wii U:"
"..Just about nothing."
Why even agree to an interview if you're just going to regurgitate the press conference and dance around every question?Because then the interviewer will go back to his office and be like, "Shit, I spent a few hours on this, I guess I have to post it."
The sensor bar on the controller and the USB slots seem like new information, though, so that's something.
I've been thinking about this since the show. I guess they put themselves behind the 8 ball, by not having enough software to really sustain the Wii through another year, which forced this announce this year.Jesus Christ! They might as well have waited until they actually know what the hell it is their making, make it, then announce what they've made. Mark Franklin just comes off looking like a fool... Then again... He might get hired as the White House press secretary...
What's particularly galling, however, are quotes like this one
That the questions are being asked is proof that, in fact, consumers DO care about technical specifications. I really wish someone would phrase a question to Reggie that highlights this, because every time they use the "People don't care about technical specs' as a way to dodge a question about technical specs, it's a slap in the face to the very people they claim to be trying to win back.what consumers have continued to look at, especially with Nintendo products, is they want to see what the experience is like.
On the one hand, fuck PR people. On the other hand, fuck PR people. We're not talking about which hand we are fucking PR people on at this time.
Here's a question I have: Will there be anyway to transfer "ownership" of all those NES and SNES virtual console games I bought for the Wii?
Like maybe a one time serial number console-to-console transfer so all purchased games on the Wii can be re-downloaded for the Wii U.
I honestly spent over $300 on virtual console old school games and it's made selling my Wii unjustifiable...
@Stonecutter:
Yeah, Nintendo has really changed. On top of everything, by announcing it this early, they effectively kill any anticipation or hype from which they could profit before releasing it. No more next-gen fever-pitched countdown; the "if you build it, they will come" strategy: people want a demarcation that identifies where they are in the time line, what the spirit of the times is; they want a ceremony that indicates progression into a new phase i.e. a console launch. But by showing off the Wii U, even without knowing what they will do with it, a year ahead of its release, they piss away their chance to easily capitalize on the hype that the gaming community want to be engaged in. They should thinks through.
"[...] no Wavebird. [laughs]" Wow. He laughed? Really? I'm glad he answered it though... it helps me answer my own question: "Will I be buying one?" No. [laughs] But seriously I was kind of hoping that they would announce a normal controller (with actual thumb-sticks and no screen) in the future... but his answer pretty much sums it up for me.They've always had that. It's called the Classic Controller.
Sounds like there will still be no decent centralized multiplayer like LIVE or PSN. It's about time to learn how multiplayer gaming works with the internet, Nintendo.
Also, I know PR people are bad with evasive answers, but this guy seems really bad. Some of the things he said didn't even make full grammatical sense.
@Binarynova said:You think that kid did any research? He just wanted to say "wah that's the last straw Im not buying it" for the 10th time."[...] no Wavebird. [laughs]" Wow. He laughed? Really? Anyway, this article pretty much gives out NO new info. Nice read tho.
Kudos to Martin Franklin for not actually answering any of the questions. That's some good public relations work.Yeah, that was impressive. It would be so hard to resist punching that guy.
It's called a Wii Classic Controller.
Sorry you had to have that fight patrick. That looked frustrating. PR folks are lots of fun.
So no gamecube support... that sucks, actually. =(
Oh, PR. Your job could be replaced with a tape recorder stocked with "We're not talking about that right now." At this point I can't even decide whether or not I'm interested in the system, because there's so little that's actually defined right now. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Remember in I, Robot where Will Smith is talking to the hologram projection of Dr. Alfred Lanning? That's the sort of vibe I got from reading Franklin's responses.
WTF is Nintendo thinking??
"That, detective, is the right question. Program terminated."
*moonwalks into the sunset*
That man is prepped for any appearance before a Congressional hearing! Patrick should have closed with "Are you now or have you ever been a card carrying member of Club Nintendo?"
Good work Patrick. Not much more information forthcoming, but you expanded on some ideas that I hadn't even considered with the new controller and Wii motes. The additional sensor bar on the controller sounds intriguing.
