Is it because "U" stands for "Ultra" or "Ultimate"? Or do they just like using pronouns? Was there an Iwata Asks that answers this that I missed?
Wii U
Platform »
The Nintendo Wii U, the follow-up to the monstrously popular Nintendo Wii console, launched in North America on November 18th 2012.
Why Do They Call It the Wii U?
@Rasmoss said:
Yeah it's because Wii is for We and U is for You. It's dumb.
I think the name is fitting considering the console itself is dumb.

Reggie said that this console was built for YOU, the hardcore gamer. In fact, the console is so centered around YOU (the hardcore gamer) they they put YOU right in the name of the console, WiiU.
I'm not shitting you. Reggie actually said that.

Because when you see it, you turn around 360 degrees and walk away!
I can't tell if you made a clever joke about how the Wii U is essentially a tard version of the Xbox 360, or if you genuinely confused 360 degrees with 180.
Please help.
Why was it not called "The Nintendo" especially with a game like Nintendo Land at launch how awesome would it have been if that was the bundled in game.
Wii U is a god awful name, the only reason they called it that is to get people who enjoyed the Wii to get a Wii U. If anything it provided large market confusion into the people they were looking to sell it to with the name not being sure what it was and whether it was even a new thing. If they still wanted to call it the Wii, then calling it The Wii 2 would have been a bad name but less confusion for all involved.
