Zhang Lu was the ruler of Han Zhong until 215 A.D. when he surrendered to Cao Cao. His rule was said to be just and humane, and he commanded an army that, for a time, could not be easily conquered by either Cao Cao or Li Jue. He also held authority enough that the Han Court granted him the title "Governor of Han'ning".
He was betrayed by his adviser Yang Song, and thereby was forced to surrender to Cao Cao. Moved by Zhang Lu's care for his people and his land, Cao Cao granted him status, calling him the "General Who Defends the South".
