I finished Control the other day and the end credits song is a real banger:

Fear of A Blank Planet by Porcupine Tree:

It's hard to say why exactly, but I feel like certain songs just really work as an end credits song. It might not even be a song that you'd listen to normally, but it fits really well as closure for the game you just finished. I remember thinking the same thing about the songs at the end of Dishonored and Driver San Francisco.

What are some of your favourites?

By the same studio actually, Late Goodbye from Max Payne 2. Yeah, it's corny for sure but it also is very catchy.

Remedy does a great job with that.

The song also appears in the game before the end which is really cool too.

Max Payne 2 is one of my favorite games so I have a soft spot for it.

The idea of credits rolling in an MMO is real funny but FFXIV always plays their main themes for the expansion and the first one, Answers, is always incredible.

I always felt that AC Blag Flags ending song was a perfect way to conclude that game.

The NOD ending in Command & Conquer with the song "Destructible Times" has always been a favorite (starts at 4:27 if the embed didn't work correctly):

Then there's of course Ace Combat Assault Horizon's wonderfully dumb rap metal end credits song "Gotta Stay Fly", I laughted through the entirety of those credits:

For me, it's Twisted Metal Black and Paint It Black. And it's way overdone by this point, but Still Alive is a classic for a reason.

Also, goddamn, but 'splosion Man's end credits are... well, yeah.

Remedy is so good at this that with Alan Wake they went ahead and did it six times.

I was too late here, but I was going to mention Alan Wake and Portal. The ending of the first SMT: Digital Devil Saga game has a very good ending theme that also builds in the last section as a bit of preparation for the sequel. I know I will think of a few others later.

The one that sticks with me is Mass Effect 1. The group is Faunts and the song is M4 Part II. The spacey electronic synth of this track fits with the original score beautifully and is a perfect end to such a great game.

@sombre: LOL that song definitely fits that game! "Dragon kick your ass into the Milky Way!" XD

@lego_my_eggo: Shadow of the Colossus is one of my favourite games ever, and the soundtrack is an all-timer for me. When I hear that song I can still picture the eagle flying and the camera panning away as it ends.

The Starsailor song from MGS3 is exactly the sort of song I'm talking about. I finished that game despite not liking it, and that song felt like a really good fit given how the game ended and all. (Also, even though my liking for MGS dropped off pretty hard after 2, that main theme still gets me every time!)

@sparky_buzzsaw: Oh man I totally forgot about Still Alive! The 'Splosion Man end song was a bit too off the wall for my tastes. I prefer the donut song ;)

I got excited for a second thinking this wouldbe an opportunity to post "Current of Love", but since we're talking games...Chrono Cross. Especially when the background vocals swell up...it hits me right in the feels.

Pretty niche, but I'm gonna go with the 3 songs during the Ys II ending & credits. Especially the last one; it hits different after you've played Ys: Origin.

Props to NieR Automata for having the credits song in three different languages, and it hits a little differently each time.

Edit: Honorable mentions go to Wind Waker, Metal Gear Solid, and Chrono Trigger.

hmm- i'm sure i'm forgetting many from my past. but most recently Gustavo Santaolalla's work on The Last of Us franchise has been very resonant for me.

the track from the first game strikes a really emotionally ambivalent tone that i found perfectly in alignment with that game's ending. feels like a melancholy cowboy riding off into the sunset.

and the track from the second game is the appropriate gut punch it deserves.

BONUS from TLoU2 (slight spoiler):

this duet cover is from later in the credits sequence, but is just so great.

@panfoot: Oh boy. I haven't played Life Is Strange, but based on what I know about it I can imagine that one hitting real hard.

I don't think I'm going to play Death Stranding, but I should check out the soundtrack because it seems like there's some interesting stuff on there.

@bakoomerang: Say what you will about Kojima's writing/weirdness but I think it would be far harder to find someone to say he's bad at using music in his games. Personally he really nailed it for the music for me on this one, some great stuff playing at just the right moments.

I'd like to add pretty much all the Final Fantasy ending credits. I'm not a fan of balads but they just feel so earnest.

Eyes on Me

Melodies of Life

Suteki da ne

My Hands

and I'll throw in the Kingdom Hearts theme and the Xenoblade Chronicles ending song (Beyond the Sky) for good measure. The original Xenoblade theme is beautiful too (Small two pieces)

I mean it's really tough to beat NieR Automata in my mind, to the point that it feels a little unfair just because of how end credits are in that game.

Other strong contenders that came to mind were Transistor, Chrono Cross, Persona 3 and Okami (the original song was unfortunately absent for the HD version).

Most end credit songs in Telltale's The Walking Dead season 2 but the last song in The Final Season episode 5 aptly named ''Take us back'' drove me to tears.

Lots of good picks in this thread already. I'd say that all of the Halo and Metal Gear Solid games have fantastic end credit themes and songs. The Best is Yet To Come at the end of MGS1 is a real strong one in particular, but I'd still have to pick the medley at the end of Halo 2 over it.

There's a zombie on your lawn

There's a zombie on your lawn

There's a zombie on your lawn

We don't want zombies on the lawn

I know your type: tall, dark, and dead

You want to bite all the petals off of my head

And then eat the brains of

the one who planted me here

I'm just a sunflower but see

me power an entire infantry

You like the taste of brains

we don't like zombies

I used to play football

Road cones protect my head

I have a screen-door shield

We are the undead

(repeat chorus)

Maybe it's time to reevaluate

I know you have a lot of food on your plate

Brains are quite rich in cholesterol

You're dead so it doesn't matter,

Instead we'll use this solar power

to make a lawn defense at any hour

I like the tricycle

There's butter on my head

I'm gonna eat your brains

(repeat chorus)

@jeremyf: NieR is my answer. Fun fact! That isn't the same song in three different languages. While the melody and structure are the same, the lyrics are totally different between the three languages.

The general consensus is that the English version of Weight of the World is written from the perspective of 2B, whereas the Japanese version is written about 2B, potentially from the perspective of 9S. The third version is written in a language that seems to be part-conlang part-Chamicuro, a dormant South American language, and while people are still working to translate it, my guess is that it's based on the perspective of the last protagonist, A2.

@sombre: Now this duder gets it. It's gotta be the God Hand. Keep that pimp hand strong.

"Take Me Home" at the end of Prey (real Prey, not that unrelated one with the same damn title) stuck with me.

"Beyond The Sky" from Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the only remotely-anything videogame-related that brought me close to tears. That one really hit, man.

Since Supergiant is on a lot of peoples' minds, all their credits songs are great but Bound Together in Pyre might be my favorite, specifically because of how it changes dynamically based on your choices.

Persona 3-5's end songs are all terrific. I always love how the lyrics in the games are in English (and some French in P3's case) and then the credits are always in Japanese.

The song Why at the end of Crisis Core hit me like a freight train the first time I heard it and really hammers home the emotion at the end of the story.

Look I know Xenogears probably doesn't hold up these days, but Small of Two Pieces at the end of the game is still an incredibly memorable piece to me.

Prey (2017) has a great soundtrack.
