2016 Game of the Year

Most disappointing: Mafia III

The promise of a great story and setting was ruined by the most boring, repetitive and formulaic open world gameplay yet. It didn't help that the PC version was an unoptimized mess at launch. I really wanted to see how Lincoln Clay's revenge tale would play out, but just could not force myself to grind through that buggy open world.

Best PC port: Gears of War 4

In a year with an alarmingly large amount of poorly optimized PC games, The Coalition took a mostly console based series and managed a near perfect PC port released day and date with the console version. The game itself was pretty damn good too.

Most improved sequel: Watch Dogs 2

Completely changing the tone and style from the original game, Watch Dogs 2 was a blast to play and got me interested in the future of that series again.

The sequel I'm glad got made: Mirror's Edge Catalyst

The story and characters are forgettable, but the thrill of high speed first person movement across the rooftops of that bright white dystopian city is still as fun as I remember from the original. I'm glad this game finally got made.

List items

  • A great new Doom game in 2016! I don't know how id pulled it off, but damn this game is amazing. The music, the speed of movement, the level design, the collectibles, the IDGAF I'm just here to kill demons attitude of the Doom marine...the best FPS campaign in many years, and it's freaking DOOM!

  • Team based shooters are not my thing, so there has to be something special about Overwatch for it to make this list. A mostly casual shooter with a large cast of interesting and unique characters that can be switched out on the fly. Too bad about that lame RNG based loot box system.

  • This is how episodic games should be done. Coming back every month or so to play another one of these insanely deep levels or to go after an elusive target is a perfect fit for Hitman.

  • The sequel to the best game of 2014 comes loaded with a surprisingly great single player campaign this time. The multiplayer is still unmatched for speed, verticality, and just general feeling of joy as you move around those maps.

  • An incredibly well polished atmospheric 2D platformer with puzzle elements and perhaps the most bizarre final act I've ever played in a video game.

  • You kill a lot of red dudes. Like a really, really large amount of red dudes. And there are katanas. And the katanas can slice bullets in half.

  • One of the few roguelikes I've been able to stomach for more than a couple hours. If it's possible for a game based entirely around guns and bullets to be charming, this is it. After around 20 hours, I've still only seen a fraction of the crazy guns and enemies this has to offer.

  • In a seemingly dying genre, the Forza Horizon series continues to produce must play arcade style racers. The Australian open world in 3 makes it the best Horizon yet.

  • The gameplay might be a bit stale four games in, but this was a fantastic story conclusion to the series.

  • A creepy point and click ghost story set on a deserted island with a group of mostly not too annoying teens. The dialogue choice system is the star, allowing for alternate paths and endings.
