Games I Played in 2016

Last year's list was garbage! I'll try to do better this year. Some big life changes made it hard for me to indulge in my primary hobby, but I'm getting things back on track this year. Adaptability is an underappreciated skill!

List items

  • A surprisingly cool musou-lite! The battles consist of little more than moving from arena to arena clearing out waves of enemies and fighting bosses (who then become playable), but the combat is solid and characters well-differentiated based on their abilities from the anime/manga. Impressive character progression too, not unlike FFX's sphere grid. A lot of replayability (i.e. grinding), and some SOLID fanservice. Not for everyone, but it's decent enough on its own that the fanservice makes it feel waaaaaay cooler than it probably is.

  • Finally got a working copy of this after years of buying non-working ones. It's a pretty solid foundation, and it's frustrating that Nintendo's barely revisited it outside of the 3DS sequel/reboot/whatever. They should do more with this!

  • Finally played this, after barely touching it at an Xbox kiosk ages ago. It's pretty rad! I can't believe they still whiffed on the camera despite having a second analog stick!

  • Showed up on Steam out of the blue (I think there may have been a leak previously). It's okay! Way more visual novel stuff than you might expect, but it's on par with the other Neptunia games. You probably already know if you're into that. It has equipment and stuff but I haven't seen any of that yet.

  • A kinda clunky stealth game, but I kinda dig the disguise system. Especially with the associated pickpocket mechanic. I've never watched the English dub so the voices don't do much for me, but it has a lot of Lupin style...but so far the wacky hijinks are kinda understated.

  • Haven't played any of the multiplayer, but man is this a beautiful game! For the era, at least. Really looks good. Not super fun to play, but I'm not far into it. I thought it was weird that the N64 version was included in Rare Replay, but I didn't grow up with either of these so I'm not aware if this remake is a sore subject.
